Alaska or Spirit? Both make sense.

Do Spirit and Alaska announce routes this time of year?

F9 and SY seem to stick exclusively to Tuesday’s, NK tends to do the same.

Leads me to believe it’s either another announcement of a quirky airline such as LF, or its AS, which makes a lot of sense given the DL SEA moves. Then again, given the virus and SEA...

Confirmed it’s AS - it’s bookable on their website. 1x daily on the 738, trying to find a start date... but I’m seeing it in August

Edited to add: appears to begin 8/18

LF to BNA seems like a good possibility after DL cut CVG-BNA recently. A bonus would be LF also adding CVG-PIT too.

not surprising it's AS, but they normally don't make announcement on Fridays, so this is a little strange.

It's a response to DL's SEA-DFW/CMH that was announced earlier this week.

Alaska’s new flight is listed as daytime (not a red eye) on a 737.
Dep. SEA 9:15, Arr. CVG 16:37
Dep. CVG 17:45, Arr. SEA 19:45

Delta’s lone SEA-CVG flight is currently a red-eye return leaving 22:25 from SEA with a 6:05 departure from CVG. Obviously the AS flight times are much more preferable for business travelers. It will be curious to see what DL does, and whether they maintain the opportunistic red eye, or change their CVG-SEA timing now that they have competition.

If I had to guess - this ridiculous SEA feud despite the ongoing virus concerns will multiply, and DL will go 2x daily, adding to its redeye.

Based on past practice elsewhere, if DL decides to match AS schedule wise, they will do it by adding a second “daily” CVG-SEA flight for the summer 2020 with a flight schedule similar to AS new route. DL would still keep the existing opportunistic SEA-CVG red-eye through this summer, and then in Sept/Oct drop the red eye and maintain just the daytime flight in the winter to compete.

The winter then provides DL an opportunity to assess whether a second flight is worth it for summer 2021, and if not, they just keep the daytime flight going and the DL red eye disappears permanently after Fall 2020. So I definitely think DL will respond with a second daytime CVG-SEA flight for summer 2020. But whether DL maintains 2x daily beyond October and in Summer 2021 is very questionable I believe.

That scenario sounds pretty likely. There's lots of seasonality to the PNW; winter is tough.

Let's see if AS CVG-SEA lasts longer than its DTW-PDX did.

Funny thing is DL doesn't even run CVG-SEA daily most of the year, November through April it is 4-5x weekly. Should be interesting to see what DL does....

The red-eye flight allows for connections at CVG. I doubt they will change it.

With the timings, passengers can connect with BLR-SEA-CVG on AA/AS but not the other way around.

UA CVG-SFO was short lived, with competition on that route with DL. I hope AS SEA-CVG proves more successful.

Well, you don't have DL or UA on CLE-SEA, but you do find Frontier on it 4x weekly (in June, anyway) and that has to depress yields.

As others have already mentioned, this is likely a response to DL announcing DFW and CMH service from SEA. It is the big boys playing here DL and AA.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing.

Increased service to Seattle where all the major companies there are telling employees not to travel and stay home.

Makes sense.

I know, I know..it’s starting end of summer and there will be no cases some say. We’ll see about that.

Added seat count to SEA to keep DL from getting more gates , that is the game AS must play given how SEA assigns gates. Going forward ever domestic DL add will probably see an add from AS. Hard to grow a hub when you can't get gates.

They can try to keep this up, but those are a lot of empty planes they are flying for the next while.

CVG daily at convenient times will be a well sought after routes for the Costco International HQ teams that deal frequently with Procter and Gamble whose world wide HQ is in Cincinnati. And vice versa. Thats a pretty decent starting point for that route traffic that had to connect before or fly red eye.

Their new partner needs to offer a E Coast strategy for cities east of Missisippi. SEA-BLR is perhaps a unique case. This is not to say AA may not think of other Asian cities from SEA.

Very excited to see AS coming to CVG and some competition coming to the CVG-SEA route. I wish it wasn't coming as a knee-jerk competitive response, that makes me wonder about the long-term viability of it, but I suppose with the coming Prime Air hub they could also be anticipating a bump in traffic on the route.

Great news for CVG and AS. Surprised AS wasn't already in CVG especially if DL is not daily year round. They are going double daily to IND with DL service so I find this very interesting.

I get they are at opposite ends but my understand is that SEA assigns gates based on total seat count so in order for AS to not lose gates to DL when DL adds flights, AS has to either upgauge the plane or add more flights to boost their seat count.

When is that calculation by SeaTac made? Monthly, quarterly, Yearly? Also, how many seats justify a gate?

SEA-CVG

Q32019. 358. 179 PDEW
Q22019. 296. 148
Q12019. 189. 95
Q42018. 255. 128

Barely enough to fill one 738 in peak quarters, not even that in winter.

Re: AS announces CVG service

There are corporate accounts on both ends of this route: Amazon, Costco, Microsoft, Boeing, etc. in Seattle and P&G, GE, Kroger (QFC/Fred Meyer connections on the West Coast), etc, not to mention quite a few advertising agencies with outposts in Cincinnati that are increasingly active in helping companies advertise at Amazon. Overall, I see the retail/industrial sectors being a stronger tie than between CVG and SEA than tech in SFO.

Both DL and AS flights are timed to capitalize on different connection opportunities. The westbound DL flight is timed to make connections to the DL flights to APAC and flights up and down the west coast. Unfortunately, the redeye does not allow for great connections on the way back from Asia, but does allow for connections to smaller midwest cities on the CVG end. The new AS flight will allow for solid West Coast/Alaska/Hawaii connections to and from CVG, and I am personally very grateful to be getting a daytime option to CVG as I find domestic redeyes (especially short ones like SEA-ORD/CVG/MSP) to be particularly brutal.

From my personal experience traveling between the two cities for both personal and business travel, the DL flight is often full, especially over the summer. I hope that both airlines can be successful on this route, and I would not be surprised to see DL add a second flight in retaliation, especially if it helps with return connections from Asia. With that, I would expect a down-guage to 2x319 or 2x221 to avoid such a significant capacity increase on the route.
