Air New Zealand Sells London Heathrow Airport Slot For $27 Million

Fri Mar 06, 2020 3:54 pm

Air New Zealand Sells London Heathrow Airport Slot For $27 Million - https://www.forbes.com/sites/willhorton ... 6c3c2e763d

The new undisclosed airline hasn't been released/published.
My guess would be Vistara. Thoughts?

They didn't get money. They got the Brooklyn Bridge instead.

Color me surprised if it was indeed Vistara that paid that much for the slot!

They don't seem to be the ones making any bold moves.

An airline that is backed by Singapore Airlines and Tata Sons cant make any "bold moves"? LOL!

They are introducing a fleet of new 787s. Need to fly them somewhere.

1, American Airlines
2, Qatar
3, Emirates
4, Delta or United.

They can always start with Birmingham, Manchester or Stansted to test the water. No need to waste $27 millions to trial a flight that is going to be difficult to compete.

I dont understand...NZ currently flies daily into LHR arriving at 1050 and departing back at 1520.

These timing slots are worth $27m??? I thought such a price tag was only for 0600-0900 timed slots.

Does seem excessive for those timings. But...the fact that they sold for $27M...gives an idea that other prized slots at LHR command an even greater price.

That is going to be a good amount of money for Air New Zealand. With so many one stop options to Europe from Auckland, it makes sense to take the money from the heathrow slot and end service.

I don’t understand why NZ sold a valuable asset such as LHR slots especially with the 3rd runway dead in the water.

If they didn’t have plans to utilise the slots, lease them out a carrier.

Wow, even when it already has 6 daily flights, all on A380s? Not to mention 3 daily A380 flights to LGW? Never knew demand between LHR and DXB would be THAT massive.

New Zealand to London isn’t an market worth competing on, far better to put people onto other airlines for the connecting service.

Could be United.....

Especially when the layover for NZ between AKL and LHR was LAX, which is not exactly the most ideal airport for connections and layovers, IMHO.

Doesn't help when competing airlines have hubs such as SIN, HKG, DXB, etc.

In a recent interview with Sir Tim Clark, he has stated that the airline is interested in increasing its LHR flights. The A380s in & out of LHR is recording high loads.

I will add the link once i find it.

Leasing probably would have been a better choice, airlines always seem to regret selling really good slots down the road.

It is perfect for North American carrier or a ME carrier without departure airport slot issues.

I'm going to take a guess and say it is Starlux or Bamboo. Starlux because they aim to be a premium brand and have the money. Bamboo because they have crazy orders and would be willing to pay 27 million for that time slot.

Not sure why this is making news today.

NZ announced the NZD 42mil sale back in January 28th in a regulatory filing.

Seems must be a slow news day for Forbes

Interesting thoughts.

My first thought was that NZ probably sold to a Star Alliance partner - but which one? UA has more 787s coming this year, could it be United? Certainly, there are other Star partners, too.
My statements do not represent my former employer or my current employer and are my opinions only.

B6 takes it to get a foot in, leases to DY for awhile until late 2021 when they launch cross pond service. Just a thought.

That's not how it works in the UK, where airports got little choice in who gets the slots. Slots are distributed by the government, not by the airport.

In some European countries slots aren't even allowed to be sold from one airline to another. The only way to get slots is to apply with the slot coordinator. Available slots are then distributed among the applicants. If an airline wants to get rid of their slots, they are to return them to the slot coordinator who will then redistribute them among the applicants. Keep in mind the slot coordinator works for the government, not for the airport.

Much better than in countries were it’s not regulated, some other airports just keep on selling more slots they can handle.

Also the only airlines airports don’t like are the ones that don’t pay their bills.

I'm going to guess a *A carrier. And with UA now year-round on DEN and adding an additional EWR frequency (which came from LH), they seem to be increasing their presence there and might have bought a permanent slot to cover some of this expansion or future expansion.

UA would make the most sense, they might be relaxing the NZ1/2 sectors between LAX-LHR-LAX. NZ used to pickup most of these passengers locally, e.g. no going into AKL.

If it is indeed UA, it would also help retain 2x daily *A service on LAX-LHR. Also UA used to run twice daily a while back.

That would make sense. Although they could upgauge from the 789, a 2nd daily would offer more against their competitors. They also need to get Polaris onto the route ASAP.

Thank you for this as I'm sat here wondering why this is all of a sudden "news"...? Some folks were waxing philosophical about NZ leaving the LON market when they had made it explicitly clear that they intend to redeploy their assets to markets/operations that made better economic sense.

When will NZ start flying direct from AKL to LHR. Are they waiting for the A350 or will they use a long range 787?

Considering that is 900nm further than SYD-LHR, very questionable any near term plane does that with a viable payload.

I'm surprised it took until reply 28 for anyone to mention B6. While it's a big price tag, B6 made some large statements when they announced London, which lead me to believe they were looking at LHR.

While I know many have speculated that B6 would end up at LGW or STN, I've always felt B6 would do what it could to attain LHR slots. I hope it is B6. But the arrival time seem almost unusable for NYC/BOS flights with leaving at 11:30 pm.

When will NZ start flying direct from AKL to LHR. Are they waiting for the A350 or will they use a long range 787?

London is now longer on NZ’s near term plans, there cost base doesn’t work for 1-stop services, once LHR stops there only 1 stop service is an 1-2x weekly AKL-RAR-LAX which is underwritten by government funding.

There current focus is non-stop point to point services to countries on the Pacific Rim.

AKL-EWR, is as long as you’ll see NZ go in the near term. Which is pushing there code 2 789s to the limit.

Perhaps DL since they've announced new SEA-LHR service to compete with AA/BA? A departure from SEA would likely come in later in the am and leave in the early afternoon...

I would say UA given its relationship with NZ but I don’t think that’s how the slot process works, NZ may have given them a heads up that they were selling the slits however.

Could easily be B6 or DL.

Was this a bad deal now that Flybe has filed for bankruptcy and their slots will come back to the market? Could water down the price a bit.
Every country has an airline. The world has Pan Am.
