FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

While I wonder if it will fly, this looks like a JFK increase which I assume is tied to AA's continued poor slot usage at JFK.

This is highly interesting. I proposed recently that PAE may see a prop carrier soak up slots at AS' behest.

This IS very interesting. I worked for Kenmore Air last summer at BFI, they only have 3 land based Cessna Caravan’s , in the summer the flights between BFI-ESD/FRD were completely full and they operated at about 5-6 daily each plus they also operate the mountain scenic to Rainer/Helens. I wonder if they will be finally getting more aircraft or if they plan on decreasing the current route offering out of BFI. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Also, Kenmore is not a Part121 carrier, so they do not need security checkpoint. So they might be operating out of somewhere other than the main terminal.

So perhaps these do not count under the slot formula.

I agree, that seemed odd to go from 2 to 0. I would bet that drop is not COVID related.

So no carrier is flying this at all? I don't see any flights from WN all summer.

Slightly shocked at YEG-IAH cut, but it is corona tangentially in that oil is so low it is changing travel demand along with corporate travel policies.

How do you reckon? It’s a long flight (chewing up a decent amount of metal) but not exactly a thin route. And AA is a big player in TPA. A surprise to be sure.

Did anyone ever come up with a hypothesis for this one last week when May was cut? Now most of the summer is gone. I’ve been a minority in saying that route isn’t needed, but I’m shocked if it really couldn’t last this long.

Recent news about the business ties between the two cities could be the reason for the drop, especially as it extends past what would be expected for the virus-related cuts.

PIT isn’t surprising. AA has been cutting frequency on this route for years. TPA is very surprising. It’s been virtually 2 or 3 daily for years and is now the largest O/D market out of PHX with no AA nonstop.

Thank you for the update enilria.

Interesting to see AA getting back into this market. I believe they start and stop this routinely.

Lots of UA April cuts not showing above as a FYI. I screen shot stuff before and after covid cuts and many are missing. Example DSM-DEN on April 17 dropped both morning departures. 5x to 3x that day. Lots of those examples.

I agree, that seemed odd to go from 2 to 0. I would bet that drop is not COVID related.

How do you reckon? It’s a long flight (chewing up a decent amount of metal) but not exactly a thin route. And AA is a big player in TPA. A surprise to be sure.

Looks to me like AA hasn't loaded COVID domestic changes.

Thank you enilrea for all your efforts - you still managed to keep the time despite the daylight savings time change :)

These are pretty brutal JFK cuts - there are cuts to large AA hubs - ORD, DFW. It is sure that BOS has far more flights than JFK on AA.

I am based off of BOS and wanted to ask NYC business traveler who is based off of Queens or Brooklyn or possibly Long Island who maybe taking JFK for their business needs. With all these cuts and just the standard token destinations left on AA - have they all making a move on DL/B6 to meet their business needs?

Someone on Facebook, pointed out that it still operates in December...maybe it's seasonal cut. Although, myself...don't trust a schedule 9 months ahead of time

Surprised since this route date backs to the US Air/ways days. I don’t know if American West operated this route before merging with US Air.

I remember before moving from PHX to TPA in late 90's that America West did a code share with United through Houston

I can't seem to find when. An article on the 2013 drawdown mentions one MEM-BOS flight on DL remaining, but I think that was pretty short-lived. Toward the end of NW, it was typically on a Compass E175 (based on my college trips home), but I remember a few 319 upgauges during the holidays. I'm hoping this grows so there is an afternoon flight added to make for better international connections.

MEM-BOS would have lasted until the MEM de-hubbing.

What are UA doing with YVR-IAH? Cut outright, then coming back with increased capacity...weird.

Yes it is. They have served the route since 1979. PHX will have zero service to PIT over the summer. PIT's comparable cities (IND, CMH, etc) will maintain 3-4 daily flights between AA and WN.

Good idea, but they're not even running MEM-JFK (on the three dates in June I checked) so it seems the plan is just to force all TATL thru ATL (and a little DTW).

Kenmore Air will not be using any of the 24 slots as it only applies to Part 121 carriers.

San Juan Airlines, which is also not a Part 121 carrier, already has been flying from PAE since last year. They're not using the new terminal either, but an FBO across the street. I expect Kenmore Air will be doing the same.

Kenmore Air will probably run them off the Friday Harbor route.

There was an article a few days ago in the Everett Herald about the three unused slots. They are still held by United for the time being.

Is it just me or looks like aa is leasing some slots to JetBlue from the look of this? Aa is cutting over 30 flights and JetBlue is adding at least 15 flights a day here.

It looks like AA is finally making ORD-HNL year-round after many years of no service at all and then the recent seasonal operations. It’s also interesting to note that the route is being upgauged from a 788 to a 789.

PIT/TPA-PHX underperform compared to average from PHX, and CMH/ATL-PHX do as well, hence the reason they are dropping the latter routes to once daily during the MAX grounding.

The UA cuts on IAH-YEG/YVR/YYC are probably directly the result of many energy related companies in Houston banning all international travel for the moment. Also, YVR is heavily dependent on cruise passengers, and that segment is going to be very impacted. After the collapse of the OPEC talks on Friday, people in Houston are talking about getting prepared for oil to drop to $30/bbl, which makes fracking and tar sands unprofitable.

Doesn't UA still fly SFO-MIA? I know they were doing that last winter for a short period. That only leaves Jetblue for SFO-FLL and AA for SFO-MIA for nonstop flights.

Yes, UA flies MIASFO. UA is also not discontinuing FLLSFO, it is a seasonal suspension. In addition, Alaska still flies FLLSFO and Spirit is soon starting FLLOAK.

PIT isn’t surprising

Yes it is. They have served the route since 1979. PHX will have zero service to PIT over the summer. PIT's comparable cities (IND, CMH, etc) will maintain 3-4 daily flights between AA and WN.

PIT/TPA-PHX underperform compared to average from PHX, and CMH/ATL-PHX do as well, hence the reason they are dropping the latter routes to once daily during the MAX grounding.

Thanks. These looked like they could be MAX related so this makes sense.

How do you reckon? It’s a long flight (chewing up a decent amount of metal) but not exactly a thin route. And AA is a big player in TPA. A surprise to be sure.

Looks like there were some major drawbacks from PHX

AA ATL-PHX JUN 1.9>1.0[1.7] JUL 2>1.0[1.6] AUG 2>1.5[1.6]
AA CMH-PHX JUN 2.0>1.1[2] JUL 2>1.0[1.9] AUG 2>1.5[1.7]
AA CUN-PHX AUG 1.5>1.0[1.0] SEP 0.7>0.5[0.4]
AA PHX-PIT JUN 1.0>0.1[1.0] JUL 1.0>0[1.0] AUG 1.0>0[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[0.9] OCT 1.0>0[1.0]
AA PHX-SAN JUN 6>5[6] JUL 6>5[6]
AA PHX-TPA JUN 2>0.2[2] JUL 2>0[2.0] AUG 2>0[1.8] SEP 2>0[1.7] OCT 2>0[1.9]

Currently the TPA, CMH and PIT flights are all loaded as seasonal cuts. AA had to cut a few things due to aircraft availability as both the MAX and NEOs are behind and ramping up CLT takes planes.

PIT doesn't underperform per say so much as it just suffers from being well connected via other hubs. The route routinely supports a full 321, it just sucks up a lot of aircraft time that AA is okay with serving via connections. If the MAX was in play right now we likely wouldn't see it be cut.

TPA fills planes at what I believe is a decent yield but the aircraft time is again the killer.

As I recall a few weeks ago, B6 made some cuts and never re-upped their numbers to get back to their own slot portfolio.

Anyone got any ideas on the logic behind making that second Dodge City flight a tag from PUB, is that really going to help the economics of the flight?

So on that logic, any route that is below the average should be dropped? PIT may be underperforming to PHX compared to CMH and IND, but to the point where PIT has no flights at all and the others remain at 3-4 daily? The markets are not that drastically different.

Sounds like similar reason PHX-BWI was cut. Doesn’t help that PHX O/D traffic basically takes a nose dive in the summer months. Why funnel people going to SAN via PHX when other hubs can achieve the same with better O/D support (more profitable).

Same rings true in the winter months when O/D drops for PHL/ORD and picks up for PHX - reduce the northern hubs in the winter and flow the traffic through the southern hubs then do the same in the summer transitioning traffic more to the northern hubs and less in the southern hubs.

More profitable way of doing business without eroding overall network capacity.

Either that or there is enough demand to FRD that it warrants two carriers, but San Juan would have simply increased their presence. Even if M5 wanted to run their flights through the terminal, I don't think there is enough ramp space around the terminal for them. They would have to run their ops through a FBO or something.

Maybe San Juan will consider flying to BLI nonstop to PAE.

There was an article a few days ago in the Everett Herald about the three unused slots. They are still held by United for the time being.

Is BFI-PAE now the only scheduled route within a metro area in the US?

Dotted line is average yield, so yes PIT/TPA underperform, and are hurt by a longer stage length(eats more a/c time).

Also, PIT-PHX does not routinely support a full A321, the route routinely operates a mix of A320/A319

Agreed, MAX cut is likely driving factor

Airlines aren't a charity, if a route is performing below average an airline has a logical right to drop it, especially if they need aircraft elsewhere (MAX issues) and it is a long route.

AA/WN on CMH-PHX have each dropped to 1 flight next summer, so PIT isn't the only place AA cut.

Plus, IND-Southwest/West US is sizably larger than PIT-Southwest/West US, therefore it makes more sense to have more service to IND, especially since AA has expressed interest in growing IND.

Heavily dependent on cruise traffic? Under 1m cruise passengers/yr and 25m passengers/yr through YVR Even if every passenger flew from YVR to/from Vancouver for a cruise that's still well under 10%

The only airport that's 'heavily' dependent on cruise traffic is likely FLL
