Airplane in grass at IAH? North side of airport...

Sun Mar 08, 2020 11:39 pm

Anyone know the story behind this airplane that's looks to be in the grass just north of the fence at IAH? Old 737 it looks like? North end, other side of runway 09/27. First time I've seen it.

On Google Maps, it appears to be a 4-engined aircraft that has been left there to rot. Perhaps an old 707?

I reckon it's a T-43 (737) and should be ex-USAF serial 73-1150

Old USAF 737. Looks like it has HPD painted on the side so I’m guessing it’s used for HRT training and other fun stuff

I got $20 says AA takes their 787's with GE powerplants. Just a hunch. Any takers?

It’s a retired USAF 737. It’s used by law enforcement agencies for counterterrorism training.

Spot on, end of story honestly. Heard is broke and owners abandoned it since it was too expensive to repair.

No. Donated to be an aid for law enforcement. Flew in on its own. Post 6 TWA772LR got it right.. was there when it arrived to be just what it is today.

Cheers

Interesting subject, didn't know that plane was there. Mods might want to change the thread title though. Makes it sound like a plane ran off the in to the grass tonight. Pulled up the thread to see what was going lol.

Ummm....no. It is a retired USAF T-43 that was used for Navigator training before the schoolhouse moved to Florida from Texas. USAF retired the fleet at that point, and the planes that weren't sent to the boneyard in Arizona or used as a static display were donated. I've flown on that particular bird twice during my days in Nav school in Texas.
