Re: SWA 737 Suffers Fuselage Crack

Wed Mar 18, 2020 8:04 am

If the fuselage is different to the original design, then Boeing should not have been allowed to grandfather the design. The bonded skin referred to was on the fuselage sides on the original 737, the crown was regular ally riveted skin. The original problem stemmed from the tie brackets that connect the skin to the frames, I personally found 120 cracked on one of ours. This allows the outer skin to flex excessively causing cracks to propagate from the rivets, as was found on the Aloha incident.

The 737 Classic/NG series have different LOV's , due constant fuselage improvements :

737-100/200/200 Cargo series L/N 1 - L/N 291 34.000 hours, 34000 cycles (Aloha accident, L/N 152, at 35,496 flight hours/ 89,680 cycles ).
737-200/-200 Cargo/-300/-400/-500 L/N. 292–2565 100.000 hours, 75.000 cycles.
737-300/-400/-500 Line No. 2566–3132 100.000 hrs , 85.000 cycles
737-600/-700/-700 Cargo/-800/-900/‑900 ER 125,000 hrs, 100.000 cycles

Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

Thanks 747classic for those numbers at the last SDR.

I guess the numbers now at 74K Hrs and 44K Cycles.

So about 50% LOV.

Unless this is a one off, then LOV numbers and the numbers for that specific area may have to be reviewed.

As most B737 will be on the ground due to Coronavirus, it might be a good time to check the grounded aircraft to see if others are affected.
