FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Does anyone know what the airline deadline is for schedule change submissions to make it into the weekly OAG? Some of these schedule changes were actually relatively light compared to what I thought I'd see.

I agree, changes are most likely being made daily. Looking here at ABQ, AA also cut ABQ-PHX from 5 to 4 on 4/7 and UA cut ABQ-DEN from 4 to 3 on 4/5. Taos Air announced all flights will end after next Sunday, 3/22 as Taos Ski Valley will close three weeks early. United now has a notice on their website to check back within 72 hours of you trip. Enilria--Thanks again!!!

I think this is only phase 1. It looks to me like they only really chopped ATL so far.

Thanks for the update!

So far DL has been doing a weird update where they "zero-out" the inventory for certain flights they plan to cut, & leave them in as sold-out for a week, and then pull them out of the schedule about a week later. For this reason I don't think a lot of their cuts are going to show up for a week, if at all.

Thanks enilria for the update.

It looks to me that only UA has fully loaded in their April changes. It matches what their website have been saying. AA's change to cut international flying by 75% has definitely not been loaded in yet. It looks to me that JFK slot waivers are not in place yet, because I would otherwise expect them to cut their JFK flying to bare bones (<40 flights a day). Same with DL, I think most of their changes have not been loaded yet. This is another one where I believe because slot waivers are not in yet, they have not filed more JFK changes. I can't imagine a lot of AA/DL feeder flights will stick around in JFK without TATL flights to connect to.

I'm sure this has been a very hectic couple of weeks for the network planners, so not a surprise they haven't fully loaded the changes in.

I think in the case of B6, they have been cutting flights much closer in, so they haven't shown up on OAG yet. Again, they are also waiting on JFK slot waivers to be in place.

For LCC/ULCC, I'd expect them to do a lot of what NK is doing, which is cutting offpeak capacities.

Plenty more cuts were loaded yesterday that aren’t reflected here, but it’s just the beginning. Tons of low fares are currently available - about $20 from ATL to anywhere in Florida, etc.

It's easier to zero out a flight and reopen inventory later than cancel a flight and add it back if things change. It also preserves existing bookings in the interim.

I have noticed this as well. Maybe this is to reduce the number of calls that their call center receives in a day due to cancelled flights?
So... when will the Northwest DC-9s be retired?

Yes there is a whole workflow involved to cancel flights that interfaces between multiple systems.

Zeroing out inventory is just the first step

AA cut RDU, CLT and PHL to LHR as those cities were not an approved gateway by the Feds.

Haven't seen BOS, but CVG/RDU appear to be hit hard, each down around 20+ flights/day. Looks like DL is avoiding cutting too much from SEA

From RDU alone, all of these appear to be gone for most of April
RDULAS
RDUBNA
RDUAUS
RDUPIT
RDUMSY
RDUIND
RDUCLE
RDUCMH
RDUJAX
RDUBDL

Some high profile exits in April as well, SLC-FLL, MSP-SMF/TYS/ORF, DTW-PDX/SAV, JFK-PBI, BOS-ORF, CVG-MCI/YYZ/BDL/PHX, JFK-YVR pushed back start

They appear to be lengthening the time they are zeroing out flights, when they do a normal schedule load it takes an hour or two tops, not an entire week

I'm curious to see where US carriers put all those widebodies... I know a number of them will get parked, but maybe we'll see some nice upgrades until domestic air travel is shut down in the US, too.

They've already announced domestic cuts. They're not going to sub widebodies generally and wind up running just 1/3-1/2 the frequency.

Saturday night. That's when most airlines normally do schedule changes, but nothing is normal now.

I know why.
If they cancel the flight they have to refund the money. The longer they wait the more people will self-cancel and be stuck with a rebook or credit or change fee.

This report doesn't capture the current month.

The bloodbath hasn’t begun yet. What we’re seeing... is likely the initial 10% cuts DL was discussing heading into last week. Plenty more cuts were loaded yesterday that aren’t reflected here, but it’s just the beginning. Tons of low fares are currently available - about $20 from ATL to anywhere in Florida, etc.

So far, the schedule that’s currently available for sale barely touches SEA — likely the hub bleeding the most cash, as most of the service has yet to mature.

This isn't even 10%

It's easier to zero out a flight and reopen inventory later than cancel a flight and add it back if things change. It also preserves existing bookings in the interim.

That's not it, see above.

PSU.DTW.SCE wrote:

They appear to be lengthening the time they are zeroing out flights, when they do a normal schedule load it takes an hour or two tops, not an entire week

See above

They may have to. Depends on the seniority of flight crews. If airlines start laying off employees at unionized airlines, they have to start at the bottom. International/widebody crews tend to be more senior. Even DL may have to keep widebody qualified FA's working even if they aren't unionized, the pilots are. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Can you maintain currency with sim time alone?

Could they have pilots come in and do a few touch and gos in a sim and be good for the month?

Why didn't AA keep some degree of flexibility for April? The current ban last for 30 days. It is likely this ban would be lifted before 15th April. What AA could do was to have a temporary schedule between 13th April to 5th May, and then decide whether to operate or not following the status of the ban. Such deep cut into May in one go seems to be too drastic and do not leave any room for manoeuvre. I am sure AA have done some home work and know the market reaction. I am just curious that what they know.

If the sim is landings certified, in many cases, yes, it can be used for landings credit. Landings currency is based on a 90 day window (not a month), as I recall.

Given the state of affairs, I think it is hardly worth it. I guess every two days, they will have to change their schedules, reaccommodate passengers - route and aircraft planning has already probably become impossible. Not to mention the big question of when people will start to travel or not. This will give them better flexibility to retire all the B767s and give them some breathing time to plan for the summer schedule (even that is uncertain now).

Actually, the big cuts seem to be happening *now*, but quietly. In other words the real cuts aren’t published.

If I were to bet, I’d say the worst of this will be over in April, *maybe* May, then things will slowly get back to normal.

Landings and instrument approaches. Both should be able to be satisfied in a sim.

B6 has cancelled all flights to Ecuador thru March 22 per the new Government Restriction barring entry of foreign visitors arriving into Ecuador.
It’s getting very difficult for airlines to find destinations to fly to right now and in the near future.
Let’s just hope the measures being put in place can slow down what is happening and a return to normal ( although not sure what that will be ) will happen sooner than later.

The approved gateway airports at the time only applied to Schengen airports. PHL/CLT-LHR only got cut after the ban was extended to the U.K. RDU was cut prior to that before the list of approved airports applied to U.K. passengers.

Unionized FA's are qualified to work all fleet types as others have stated if and or when furloughs start at union carriers like AA and UA they start from the bottom of the seniority list and work their way up. With DL's FA's being nonunion one would hope DL would start from the bottom of the list. But without a contract DL management can technically do whatever they want to do should furloughs become necessary.

Judging from China's apparent recovery I think here in the US the recovery will probably begin in mid-June or early July. According to Scott Kirbys recent town hall he stated parking or grounding an entire large fleet type for such a short period of time not cost efficient. The operative word there is large. For an airline like AA or UA to ground their entire 772/ER fleets it might look like they are saving money but the cost to stand the fleet back up and certify all those pilots would cost more than the money saved by grounding the entire fleet. No one at the town hall asked if simulators are enough to keep pilots current but he seemed to suggest they are not when he stated training cost to re-certify the pilots would be expensive and it would take time.

If UA and AA had a smaller fleet of 772 perhaps they would park the fleet kind of like what we are seeing LH do with their A380's. But for the time being UA's plan is to park a mixture of all our fleet types while at the same time keeping all our fleet types flying. Meaning UA will park portions of our A320/19s, 737s, 757s, 767s, 777s, and 787s but also keep every fleet type flying to keep pilots current (at least that was the plan on this past Friday morning but of course plans can/will change).

New station start-up. Probably not much point to open it up when the demand won't be there. They can also easily reaccommodate 45 mins to the North or South out of SBP or SBA.

Indeed, Argentina instituted a travel ban from the US, Europe, China, South Korea and Iran beginning tomorrow 16/3. American won't return to EZE (as of today) until June, except Miami which begins in May but with only one daily flight. LAX-EZE is suspended untill October 2020. Of course, this is all very fluid.

Turkish Airlines is not banned, same as Emirates, Ethiopian, Qatar and Latin American airlines & Air Canada. Yet. All European and American carriers end their services tomorrow, a well as Aerolineas Argentinas and LATAM services to Europe and the US. AR to operate repatriation flights from the US and Europe to bring back Argentina nationals stranded there.

They'll schedule all pilots to keep them current. That doesn't take many hours. If they dramatically crush frequency in a busy market they'll add to the demand decline. 3x a day ATL-ORD wouldn't cut it - they'd lose too many passengers to AA/UA/WN.

It might be interesting to start aircraft park/retirement threads by carrier rather than dumping them all together. My thesis is they're going to take a little off the top of many middle-age to high-average-age types (757, 767, 320, MD-90) rather than eliminating types entirely (with the exception of MD-88s, which they have long said would be done by 12/31/20, anyway.)

DL suspended all MSP-AMS and MSP-CDG flights starting March 14th.

https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/ ... yptr=yahoo

Is DL the first airline to suspend all hub-to-hub routes from a particular hub? MSP-ICN is also gone.

Is DL the first airline to suspend all hub-to-hub routes from a particular hub? MSP-ICN is also gone.

Likely one of the first. If you consider London Heathrow an AA hub, then AA is another as they have suspended ORD/LAX/JFK/CLT/PHL-LHR.

Can you maintain currency with sim time alone?

Could they have pilots come in and do a few touch and gos in a sim and be good for the month?

If the sim is landings certified, in many cases, yes, it can be used for landings credit. Landings currency is based on a 90 day window (not a month), as I recall.

Landings are 90 day cycle. The bigger problem is going to be all the pilots who just finished up, are in training or about to start. Pilots have to accumulate 100 hours on new planes (a few exceptions exist) within 120 days. With such a large volume of cancelled flights and with some international fleets losing 75-85% percent of their flying.... consolidation will be impossible!

I guess you missed the news last night that AA is grounding nearly its entire widebody fleet.....

Did not know that. Thanks for in info.

They'll schedule all pilots to keep them current. That doesn't take many hours. If they dramatically crush frequency in a busy market they'll add to the demand decline. 3x a day ATL-ORD wouldn't cut it - they'd lose too many passengers to AA/UA/WN.

How many passengers are there to lose at this point?......Preserving frequency to satisfy consumers is NOT the thing to be doing right now.

When demand is back, then you can worry about preserving market share

Delta ATL-SLC, two flights are A330s and one is a 763.

Has WN not made any close-in cuts yet? Or do they just not show up on here? There's got to be some weakness that can be pulled on the intra-CA/TX routes, FL, LAS, etc.

Actually, the big cuts seem to be happening *now*, but quietly. In other words the real cuts aren’t published.

If I were to bet, I’d say the worst of this will be over in April, *maybe* May, then things will slowly get back to normal.

It could take years before things get back to normal. Things are going to get worse before they'll get better :(.

Possibly. But my guess is months.

AA announced their parking almost their entire wide body fleet. Furthermore, domestic travel is cratering...they don’t need the upguage.

I would think the prize goes to United, no? They've killed all TATL out of ORD, including to Star hubs FRA and BRU, and their Asian flights haven't resumed yet that I know of
