FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: There's too much for me to summarize. Please crowd source any patterns you see. I only marked things that appear permanent.

Thank you enilria for your usual hard work. Honestly, I thought the US domestic cuts would be deeper.

Thanks again for this awesome thread. Does anyone have any idea what EK’s plan is for the rest of their US destinations? Are they just pulling out indefinitely?

Good morning, thanks enilria.

Looks to me at least that AA/DL cuts are only minimally loaded up to this point. Not sure if they will just cancel last minute on these. UA's seems to have more of their announced cuts loaded.

AS's cuts look to match what their announced cuts for April at least. NK seems to have loaded everything too. WN looks mostly loaded. I think there will be more cuts still. My guess is B6 still has some Caribbean cuts that need to be loaded as other countries close their borders.

HA cuts will get deeper I think with the recent 14 day announcement.

Not sure how F9 is going to run most of their schedule. Kind of crazy to me.

Some of the seemingly little blinking that XNA has experienced so far. UA pulled SFO a few weeks back, but I wonder if that one is 100% virus related...I have my doubts, especially as it was pulled all the way through the fall.
AA still has a robust schedule to DFW in April at 9 daily, which is I think just 1 or 2 below their peak season schedule, though with no mainline included. DL pulled one of their 6 flights to ATL and down-gauged their morning mainline to a CR9 but that's about it...MSP and LGA remain and with their CR9s as always.
I'm assuming the big three want to have their options readily available once business traffic start to creep back, whenever that may be.

EMIRATES suspends all passenger operations from 25 March 2020:

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Group said: "As a global network airline, we find ourselves in a situation where we cannot viably operate passenger services until countries re-open their borders, and travel confidence returns. By Wednesday 25 March, although we will still operate cargo flights which remain busy, Emirates will have temporarily suspended all its passenger operations. We continue to watch the situation closely, and as soon as things allow, we will reinstate our services."

Interesting possible strategy at play for SEA. Gate allocation is based off of available seats. DL or AS could invest in flying empty planes to squeeze the other out of so many gates.

EK whacked SEA, too, but kept BOS at daily (kind of surprised at that). Draconian BA cuts on LHR-BOS as noted, but I thought the single daily would be on something bigger than a 772.

Same here. I'll be curious to see what more comes in the weeks ahead. I flew DL twice in the last few weeks and there weren't any changes, though things were just starting, and I was on the DL Elite yesterday in regards to a trip in a little more than three weeks to BDL and was surprised that my DTW connection was upgauged to a 737-900 and they're still operating the same number of flights between those two cities.

I concur with so many every week ... thanks Enilria for your dedication and hard work. It's appreciated by so many and looked forward to every Sunday with my cup of coffee! Stay safe everyone.

I usually eagerly await these posts every Sunday, but this week's version just makes me sad. I honestly don't even have the morbid curiosity to go line by line to see routes that are going on hiatus and quite possibly never coming back.

Amazing how some of this is already outdated. For example UA announced they’re suspending all transborder ops for April as are WS.

Looks like HU PEK-SJC might be finished. Down to two intercontinental flights assuming NH and BA return.

It just goes to show how quickly things are moving in the environment. I applaud enilria for even attempting it this week, I'm sure it's a ton of work

I just think there maybe hardly any demand based on future bookings and lack of spot bookings.

Enilrea - thank you for doing a fabulous job and great hard work. I just think a lot more cuts should be expected.

I believe they suspended all service to the USA in an announcement yesterday.

Is F9 really running everything? Perhaps with their non-daily schedule they can't really cut.

I'll keep doing it as long as I can and there are schedules to cut. LOL

Thanks again for all that you do. I know we all knew that this was coming, but it is just brutal to see the magnitude of it. Some of these temporary suspensions on the longer routes to small markets may evolve into permanent cuts as the economy continues to slow. I think it will be also ominous when airports start reporting March and April traffic numbers just to see the year over year percent decline.

Thank you Enilria for the time and effort you put into doing this for us every Sunday. I know a few weeks ago I came at you pretty hard when I thought you were singling out UA unfairly. But just know I do appreciate all the effort and time you put into these threads every week.

These past two weeks reading the OAG thread have just been painful, and it doesn't matter what airline we work for, or which airline is our favorite airline, it is just painful to see the entire industry suffering like this.

I hear that right now we are down about 80% in terms of traffic.

Thanks, Enilria for your weekly posts! Long time reader...I apparently have some time to actually post.

I received an email from Frontier offering a $50 additional credit if I cancel my reservation by Monday. Those credits will be good for bookings made by December 31, 2020, but you don't have to fly by that date. My guess is we'll see a big Frontier adjustment next weekend and this credit was their attempt to get people jump and cancel before they did a major schedule adjustment. The benefit for Frontier is they keep the money as opposed to issuing refunds for flight cancelations.

I would not be surprised if one of the ULCC carriers just does a temporary shutdown soon. Leisure travel is basically non-existent right now and their customer base has been the most affected by the service industry essentially being decimated by social distancing and quarantines.

Thanks as always for your efforts and willingness to share, enilria!

Quick count (weekday-ish) reduction in flights in those DL changes by hub/focus for April:
156 ATL
69 MSP
65 LGA
56 JFK
53 DTW
38 SLC
26 BOS
22 LAX
19 RDU
15 SEA
13 CVG

A few themes in the cuts:
--Huge majority are one or two frequency cuts
--Some of the highest-frequency shuttle-ish markets got notably bigger cuts such as NYC-BOS/WAS/CHI, LAX-SFO.
--Of fully-suspended markets the majority seem to be point-to-point or hub-overfly (like ALB-MSP)
--Between RDU and CVG, Raleigh saw more P2P routes fully suspended while CVG's primarily saw frequency cuts and fewer suspensions

Speaking of RDU they seemed to take it harder on the chin than pretty much any non-connecting hub this week. I come up with 30 fewer (weekday-approximate) departures in April and 11 markets suspended, though a few (such as BNA-RDU) have another carrier. At the moment May holds a handful more flight cuts and two more route suspensions. Makes you wonder if some big RDU traffic generators were hit especially hard compared to the general freefall we see everywhere, or if perhaps a lot of RDU buildup was about pushing marginal routes/frequencies in a fast-growing market aimed at future profitability.

I completely agree. There is at least another 25% reduction expected as well as extensions into May.

For example, there were no reductions to EYW from any carrier this time around. Announced just two days ago and effective today, the hotels are all shutdown in addition to the bars and restaurants.

These decisions for reduced capacity for this week's load were made before states and cities announced they were going to complete lockdown.

There is still a lot of fiction published out there. Dallas-Houston on Southwest 17 x day? That is going to be a LOT of empty seats. Like Enilria said, a lot yet to come.

I have the impression that long-haul schedules are a lot easier to cut. The domestic schedule is more complicated to shred in part.

It's really becoming clear to me that airlines can't cut flights fast enough from their schedule. These cuts just aren't close to what needs to happen. I'm noticing that in CLE UA is cancelling quite a few flights, maybe this is easier to do than loading new schedules.

If they have it in the schedule they have to schedule crew. Crew that get scheduled get paid whether the flight goes or not. The DOT would not be impressed with terminating flights a month in advance and failing to notify customers.

Thanks for the cut by hub count, and for the lucid observations. In total that's nowhere - nowhere - near the 70% systemwide cut they talked about on 3/18/20, even adjusting for gauge and stage length. There must be many more cuts to come.

Since F9 is privately owned by Indigo, they won't publicly announce cuts most likely. Although a week or so ago they internally announced 10% capacity reductions for April, 20% for May, and now I'm hearing it has been revised to 70% cuts for May.

I'm assuming those will be loaded in either on Tuesday or Thursday

My immediate inclination is that, given RDU & ATL's proximity, they are going to drive as many connections through ATL as possible. Although given many of the RDU routes are on CR2s & CR7s, I'd imagine they'd lose a significant amount of money on some of the suspended routes, operating 2 flights a day with only a couple people per flight.

They are keeping RDU-BOS 6x daily which is bizarre to me other than the Pharma connections, considering RDU-LGA will only be 5x daily.

I’m assuming we’ll see a bunch more still...especially from AA.

For UA I’ve noticed they’ve only loaded a lot of April cuts for just the 1st week so those aren’t even showing on here, so I’m sure once they extend those, it will look much worse. Just do a dummy booking the 1st week of April and you’ll get a glimpse.

Yep these cuts are already totally outdated. Right now the way it seems to be working - at least at DL - is that they are zeroing out a lot of flights so they can stop adding passengers to those flights, and then cancelling on an as needed basis in a 24-48 hour window before departure. My guess is they don't want to trim the schedule too aggressively right now, because doing so would overwhelm the app and the call centers when millions of people got cancelled flight messages. Overall, though, I am quite surprised how much actual flying there still is, especially when, as enilria said, the information we have is that most flights are completely empty. For today, for example, four of six DL MSP-LAX flights are operating, which is a giant amount of capacity between one place on partial lockdown and one place on total lockdown.

Enilria, thank you as always for putting this together. These threads have huge historic value despite how painful they are to read.

Thanks for tallying this up. This is more like a 15% cut that they initially announced vs the more recent 70% cuts. Once those cuts are made for April and May, that will be interesting to look at.

To your point, a lot of the reductions are 1-2x frequency cuts. For RDU, that means a lot of markets are cut, as many are only served 1-2x per day. I made this point in the DL coming out as a smaller carrier thread. The Shuttle markets must be especially bad; they're 2/3 frequency cuts. I'm not sure any of those cuts will ever be fully restored. The Shuttle-type service might be hard for anyone to sustain going forward.

Notable is that as far as I can tell, none of the US4 are closing a single domestic year-round station completely (at least through this update).

It is a shame for example, for a route like SFO-DTW that UA tried really hard for 5 years to make work for all the work and progress to be flushed down the toilet, but that's how it goes in this industry. The route was dependent on connections to Asia and Australia and never captured much of the local market.

Likewise for routes that just launched and haven't really gotten a chance to develop.

I wonder not cutting any domestic stations is part of their backroom dealings for a bailout.

I think this is a great point. Remember, Walmart runs XNA and Walmart is one of the few businesses actually doing fairly well right now (hiring over 1,000 temp workers during this). I think cities like XNA, RDU, CVG, CLE and similar will see their demand rebound faster than other markets. I also think we'll see some typically seasonal tourist destinations (Domestically) get a boost in their offseason once this is done. Near distance vacations and some business travel will be the first to recover. We all need a vacation after this!

But honestly, these are just guesses. Nobody knows, but if you assume what I said to be true, you have to maintain your presence to be ready for the demand. RDU and similar cities you can reroute traffic as demand escalates, but XNA with it's already limited service, needs to maintain close to current levels.

CVG April cuts have not yet been fully reflected in schedule. CVG-STL and CVG-MCI have been cut for April (all flights zero'd out April 2 - May 2), but are still showing in schedule. CVG-BDL cut made this schedule change.

Thanks Enilria - I'm pleasantly surprised it was posted as soon as it was given the number of changes.
What's as intriguing as what was posted, is what wasn't. A couple examples.
PAE had no cuts.
SEA - CHS on AS wasn't cut, Thursday I was on that flight and there were 20 passengers.
CHS shows 4 cuts (1 by DL on each of ATL, DTW, JFK) and the BA flight.
It's going to get worse.
Next week's title...Hold my beer and watch this.

It does make me wonder what's taking AA/DL this long to make their cuts. They are probably 1/4 or less through the cuts that they said they are making for April. Is it just a matter of different factions inside the company making pleas to not cut them? Seems like the LCCs have more or less made all their cuts already (aside from F9/G4) aside from possible future international closures.

China Southern is planning the resumption of WUH-JFK in April....????? There is no way Wuhan is going to let in passengers from New York. The City is headed to a worse situation than Wuhan ever had.

Looks like there are a few permanent cuts (cut through August or into Fall/Winter) mixed into the April/May carnage.

UA LAX-SGU
UA DEN-FAI? (summer seasonal, cut for summer)
UA EWR-HHH? (summer seasonal, cut for summer)
AD JFK-VCP
VS EWR-LHR
RJ JFK-AMM
HU SJC-PEK
HU ORD-PEK
This is my signature until I think of a better one.
