Local reports are that the government gave their okay today, with private investors expected to sign off in the coming days.

Uk government and NHS spokeswoman saying tonight that the likely trajectory for this could be 6 months before we're back to life as usual. They are sighting the early opening of China as already having some regression.

Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52084517

If that is right then Aviation is going to be in a really bad place. The northern hemisphere summer travel will not happen and it won't be until October that things start to get back to BAU, which we know is when things start to quieten down for winter.

US airlines considering consolidating flights:

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/29/consoli ... osses.html

"U.S. airlines and the Department of Transportation may soon have to consider consolidating service to dozens of cities around the country in a bid to help carriers cut losses, several airline industry executives told CNBC."

"How would service consolidation work? Take the route from New York City to St. Louis, Missouri. Right now, American, Delta and Southwest all fly the route from LaGuardia Airport to St. Louis Lambert International Airport. If the route were temporarily consolidated, all airlines would continue selling tickets on the route, but the carriers would agree to put all the passengers on one plane."

There was a Washington Post article which mentioned this was the study Pence used in making his presentation to the president on how the economy would recover. It is describes a brutal difficult next several months, as well as what the government needs to do to prepare for when the next pandemic arises. I am not a fan of the American Enterprise Institute, but this is a scientifically back paper, longish, tedious, nerdy. And worth taking the time to read. If you can get through the Washington Post wall the article on this is well done.

Lufthansa will maintain its current passenger flight schedule (~18 weekly long haul, 50 daily short haul) until at least May 3rd, two additional weeks. https://www.airliners.de/lufthansa-flugplan-mai/54652
This also means that Austrian remains grounded until then.

FRA is closing terminal 2 from next week until further notice. https://www.airliners.de/frankfurter-fl ... nal/54650T

The German government is reportedly in discussions with both LH and DE (independently) about acquiring a stake to ensure the companies' liquidity. In particular DE is in trouble because LOT is in no position to perform the planned take-over anymore. https://www.airliners.de/lufthansa-regi ... gung/54658 https://www.reuters.com/article/us-cond ... ss+News%29

Thomas Cook Aviation has filed bankruptcy (likely permanently). The airline had originally emerged from the Airberlin bankruptcy and was doing wet-lease flights for DE, who has cancelled all wet-lease contracts to preserve cash. https://www.focus.de/finanzen/news/einz ... 40469.html

Starting Monday, SAS will use one single aircraft for domestic services in Sweden and fly ARN to VBY, UME, LLA and KRN only.

Source, in Swedish, possibly behind paywall

...

Translation:

...
Arlanda to Umeå, Kiruna, Luleå and Visby continues while all other domestic services cease. The purpose of continuing these flights is, according to the company, to maintain infrastructure of vital interest for the society.
...
All domestic flights will be conducted with the same aircraft of model A320neo.

300 cabin crew from SAS will get a crash course in caregiving to be able to offload some simpler tasks from regular staff at the hospitals.

BA, which has the only direct flights between Europe and Australia (as QF has shut down its international flights), will cease its daily LHR-SIN-SYD flight after 7 April with a planned resumption on 1 May. The final SYD-SIN-LHR return is on 9 April with a one-way price including taxes of A$1,260 as I write this, so anyone desperate to return to Europe needs to book soon.

As of April 2nd, only about one third of the comercial airliners worldwide had been mothballed. This is what a statistical analysis says that was ordered by the German economic weekly „Wirtschaftswoche“ from CH-Aviation. The report claims that many aircraft have been put into a sort of short-time working*** scheme with much fewer daily cycles. That way airlines could more easyly swittch back to normal operations, the authors claim.

The article contains an interesting table with a breakdown by regions, just scroll down to the hottom where the outer right hand column shows the percentage of aircraft grounded.

https://translate.google.com/translate? ... 15154.html .

The Swedish government have decided to procure traffic on 8 domestic routes to secure society critical routes.

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/stat ... flyglinjer

The Swedish government have decided to procure traffic on 8 domestic routes to secure society critical routes to allow for medical staff and
supplies, defence related staff (totalförsvaret = military + civil defence) or staff working in with energy production* to be able to be transported
quickly to northern Sweden and to Gotland. It is a temporary solution for one month at the time for a period of maximum 5 months and for a
maximum cost of 105 million SEK. A deal with current operators is the first hand choice.

*there are many larger hydroelectric dams in northern Sweden that are a crucial part of Swedish energy production.
