Leeham on vaccine:
https://leehamnews.com/2020/11/10/hotr- ... cine-news/

“Even if a second candidate is approved and can be produced in the same quantity next year, that means just 17% of the world’s population will be vaccinated. And that assumes everything goes according to plan.”

I personally believe more candidates will be available, but it will take time to vaccinate the world.

For those who haven't seen the worldometer's tracking if Covid19, I recommend it. I always use the 7 day trailing average (one of the local agencies typically doesn't report on the weekend and that pushes Monday data into Tuesday, so smoothing data is required, in my opinion).

CAPA is not encouraging:

https://centreforaviation.com/analysis/ ... day-543534

“We do need to adapt to this new and compelling scenario. COVID-19 is not going to go away in 2021, let alone 2020. It's not going to be solved quickly by a vaccine. Even distribution of the vaccines, and we'll talk about this elsewhere in today's show, will take at least two years to be distributed globally.

The article notes airlines need to shrink. I personally think production us the issue, I would hope that there is a better solution than within 2 years, but that discussion needs to be in another thread.

The UK government is set to cut from 14 to five days the time that quarantined arriving passengers must wait until they take a Covid-19 test, and if the result is negative they will be released from isolation immediately. The 14-day quarantine period has been widely blamed for crippling the aviation and travel sectors.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is up to 90% effective ("up to" since they are testing multiple dosing regimes)

https://www.theguardian.com/society/202 ... university

This is far bigger news than the Pfizer and Moderna results IMO, even if slightly less effective:
  • It's cheap - £3 per dose vs £15-£25 for the other two. Sold to developing countries at cost.
  • It has benign handling characteristics
  • Most importantly they're way ahead in setting up the global supply chain, with deals for manufacturing in the UK, US, India, South Korea, Thailand and Brazil. 3bn doses capacity next year. Peak efficacy at 1.5 doses per person, so that's 2bn people.

Fantastic news.

Secondary hubs

“Secondary hubs, possibly secondary bases, won’t make that mark,” Pearce said, referring to airlines’ need to fly cash-generating routes.

It seems business travel is needed for the secondary hubs to thrive.

"UV-emitting LED lights found to kill coronavirus. Finding suggests technology can be installed in air conditioning, vacuum, and water systems. Researchers tested the optimal wavelength for killing the coronavirus and found that a length of 285 nanometers (nm) was almost as efficient in disinfecting the virus as a wavelength of 265 nm, requiring less than half a minute to destroy more than 99.9% of the coronaviruses"

"Rather than disinfecting a bus, train, sports hall, or PLANE by chemical spraying, disinfection systems based on LED bulbs can be installed in the ventilation system and air conditioner, for example, and sterilize the air sucked in and then emitted into the room" (or airline cabin).

:alert: Dutch government release:

The ban on passenger flights from South Africa and the ban on both sea and air travel for passengers from the United Kingdom will be lifted as of Wednesday 23 December (00.01 Dutch time). These bans will be replaced by a requirement that prior to the start of their trip, all passengers – including EU nationals – must be in possession of a declaration documenting a recent, negative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test. Once they arrive in the Netherlands, all passengers are strongly urged to quarantine themselves for a period of 10 days.

Dutch government release - Negative test declaration now mandatory for all international air travel to the Netherlands

... From 00.01 on 29 December 2020 all passengers, including Dutch nationals, must have a recent negative PCR test declaration in order to board an aircraft bound for the Netherlands. Everyone arriving in the Netherlands is strongly advised to self-quarantine for a period of 10 days.

The negative test required for boarding is not a substitute for self-quarantining on arrival. The government made this decision today...
