AAL9440 MIA-LIM diverts to MIA reaching LIM

Wed Mar 25, 2020 12:24 am

Just came across this AA flight which diverted to MIA upon reaching its destination. Very long diversion. Maybe charter or cargo flight.

9400 flight numbers are ferry or maintenance flights. Not a diversion

The flight was doing a ferry flight to rescue Americans from Cusco, Peru. It diverted back to Miami. A Latam Peru A320 was supposed to take the Americans from Cusco to Lima to connect to this flight however Peruvian authorities did not approve the flight and also did not give AA the permission to land at LIM. Peru is currently in a total lockdown of the country.

This isn't the first time I've heard of a plane trying to land at LIM in the last few day, if carriers (even if a charter/rescue flight) know a country is in complete lockdown, why bother taking off in the first place? Can someone explain that? Thanks

They are repatriation flights. AA/UA both operated a flight from LIM on Monday.

There had been an agreement for this operation to proceed then a different branch of the Peruvian government claimed they weren't consulted and cancelled the whole thing as the AA flight neared the Peruvian border.

Peru is a hot mess right now and this is another example.

Any sources for this? Did AC, WK, BA and IB manage to land? I saw all of them with AA at similar distance from Lima yesterday when I looked on FR24.

In times of turmoil airspace can close to (certain) flights all of a sudden, this happens even after careful airline planning and negotiations.
It mostly reflects miscommunications between nations and air carriers.

Last week an identical situation happened to a scheduled KLM flight AMS-DEL.
The flight carried only Indian nationals, as no EU nationals were permitted to enter India.
These Indian nationals traveled from North America to Delhi via AMS.
However the KLM B787-10 was turned back in Russian airspace as Indian airspace closed to this flight all of a sudden.
It took 3 days of diplomatic negotiations to bring the Indian nationals - who camped at AMS as they were not permitted to enter the EU anymore - home to DEL.

If you can't succeed, try again. As I'm write at 945 AM EDT Wednesday morning, AA 9940 is once again airborne MIA-LIM.

Its sad that countries are sticking it to foreign citizens trying to get back home. Why would Peru want a few hundred Americans stranded in their country to stay ? It's is a problem they can get rid of but they are stubborn people.
