Ethiopian A350 in SLC

Wed Mar 25, 2020 3:15 pm

Sitting in F terminal in SLC I noticed a Ethiopian A350 parked in the deice pad. Anyone know what it’s doing here?

You sure it isn't a 788? Ethiopian sent one from Lome to SLC yesterday: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flig ... 5#24447c05

There's also an Ethiopian 777-200LR inbound to SLC: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/et8706

These are likely repatriation flights?

Yeah you are correct. I could barely see it. But it’s a 788. Just taxied by it. My mistake.

They're not in NBO. They're not in TYN because ET doesn't fly there.

The SLC flights seem to do an ADD-LFW-IAD-SLC. ET definitely doing repatriation flights, more flights that are originating from ADD also.

Who's paying for these flights? The church?

I would think so as the church is extremely wealthy but I could be wrong.

They're in TYN as a selected few flights to PEK were required to clear customs and quaranteen at other desinated airports before being allowed to continue onto PEK. TYN is the desinated quaranteen airport for ET's flights.

According to a post in the coronavirus thread, the 788 flew to SLC from JNB, via LFW & IAD. And of course it would have been ferried to JNB from ADD given it was a charter (unless it was already in JNB for some reason).

I have pics of the 787 but are unable to upload, Anet is not letting me upload for some reason? A 777 just touched around 12:30 local time, nonstop from Africa. The 787 had to stop at IAD last night as CBP is next to impossible to get after hours at SLC.

Yes it was ferried to JNB. It wasn't a tag along to existing JNB service.

The return flights out of SLC are going nonstop to ADD.

What's considered after hours at SLC?

Interesting. This started on Monday this week. Is this specific to ET or are there other airlines also landing in TYN? Do other airlines have such measures to deal with?

Other airlines yes, but not necessarily TYN.
EY to XIY: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ey888
SU to TSN: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/su204
Chinese carriers are also affected, CA982 from JFK to TSN: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ca982
CA992 from YVR to SHE: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ca992
CA942 from DXB to PVG: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ca942
HU7976 to TYN: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/hu7976

These are just a few examples off top of my head as CA has far more and I'm sure I've missed some other carriers as well.

These measures are only applicable for flights to PEK and having experienced the incompetence of Beijing's health/quaranteen system I'm not surprised by any of these movements. They also forced all international flights out of PKX to PEK, then moved everyone to T3D at PEK only to encounter significant overcrowding, before moving them to some exhibition center...

There was a reason why PEK was the epicenter of SARS.

SLC CBP has enough staff for the Delta scheduled flights. So they have manpower from 11:00-21:00. I could never get them to clear our Biz Jet, and had to stop in Tucson if coming out of Mexico or Great Falls if coming south from Canada. You might get lucky and get an agent 14:00-15:00 but that’s like pulling teeth. SLC CBP is a challenge due to manpower. As they told me once Delta is their main focus.

There was an ET A350 at ARN last Sunday (22nd March).

ET A350s, especially when demand fell to China, were redeployed to some interesting destinations including ARN.

I am looking at this ET flight now, from Montreal Canada to Belo Horizonte in Brazil, having made it to Montreal from ADD via Lusaka and Maputo in Mozambique!

https://www.flightradar24.com/ETH8301/24473f63

And then some sleuthing has me thinking that the Montreal connection is incorrect data, but the flight is meant to bring "Brazilians in Africa home to Brazil!" with the flight chartered by a company called Vale which has hundreds of employees in Mozambique. https://www.aeroin.net/boeing-787-dream ... ocambique/

Here's one more flight that's in progress, I suspect it's on its way to Kinshasa in the DRC. Then where off to next? I think the Mormon church has people there, but we shall see.

Are the ET flights using a jetway or remote stand in SLC given the construction?

I saw a picture that had it by a jetway.

The one that went to Kinshasa carried IAD even though FR shows it should go to San Antonio, TX.

It looks like the plane routed CAI-DEL-CAI-SLC since yesterday using flight numbers 3090, 3091, 3092. Probably an evacuation flight from India with tech stop at CAI. I might need to drive up to the airport for this one.

DL 8874 B77L SYD-SLC passing Hawaii now, expected 1440L at SLC. I understand the Mormon church wanting to bring the missionaries home. But afraid Salt Lake could become a Covid hot spot. In addition the last 2 weeks have had 5 flights from NRT, 4 from SCL, 2 from Guatamala and one from MSP (up gauged from the usual 738) on Delta. Plus three from Africa, two Ethiopan and one on Egyptian. There may have been more that I missed. That is a lot of people coming from around the world coming into one city that was used to 2 or 3 of flights to Europe before Covid 19. All aircraft have been A333/B788 or larger. Too bad we are in these times, hasn't been this variety of aircraft in SLC since the Olympics.

My understanding is that the missionaries are all being told to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival, regardless of symptoms or exposures. I worry more about the arrivals from Asia than those from the southern hemisphere right now.
In addition to the flights you mentioned, I believe there has also been at least one from SAL, one from EZE, and a second EZE flight is scheduled tomorrow. Those have all been on DL, so easier to miss. Probably still more that I haven't noticed. Some of them are being posted onto the DL Widebody thread.

I hope anybody picking them up at the airport and coming into contact with them also isolate for 14 days! Hard to do with the meters and greeters, but the airport has become very strict on people meeting passengers, no more than two per car and can't get out except to help load bags.

Thanks for info, I see that now on flightaware. Still makes me nervous, all these full widebody flights coming from around the world headed to here. Love having these airlines/airplanes coming in but what are they bringing with them? We already have coronavirus here, we don't need more! Most people are nervous here with the virus not to mention the earthquake a couple of weeks ago, at least the aftershocks seem to have quit.
