CX831 JFK-HKG is diverting to JFK?

The flight just turned around north of Montreal

As an ATC I have seen this before when pilots are trying to figure out exactly what to do without it being an emergency situation. Looks like they've either remedied the problem or are debating what to do before continuing on with the journey or returning to JFK.

Speed has been slightly reduced, if online data is correct. Right now they are at 499 kts.

Was there enough fuel burn related to this deviation that Hong Kong may not be within reach now due to low reserves ?

The speed graph could give a clue as to why they've turned around, since about 45 minutes after take off it wasn't constant.

Not necessarily conclusive- you can see speed charts being all over the place on many flights. Honestly, sometimes I'm not even sure if they know whether they're displaying ground speed air speed or lunar orbital velocity!

Sure, buddy of mine spent three hours holding at 35,000 ft at the Russian border on a Finnair A340 op NRT HEL, airline hadn’t filed some paperwork for airspace transit. Why not?

FL310 is not out of the ordinary for a flight like this which is carrying a tremendous amount of fuel. A step climb up to final cruise altitude as they get lighter (due to burning off fuel) is normal and happens over several hours. Although, I doubt they've got more than 10% of the seats filled, if that so needing to stay so low may not be due to the reason I stated above.

Flightaware shows it now with a destination of JFK, but still seems to be headed over the pole. Speed has become consistent, and the altitude has stepped up consistently as well. Perhaps they considered turning back, but then decided to proceed?

Either for belly cargo or repatriation. CX is only scheduled to operate one more flight to JFK until the end of April...on April 2 with a B77W. I suspect that this will be for repatriation as well. (Remember, all other China to JFK service is suspended as per CAAC directive.)
