United Sending 777s to SEA This Summer?

Mon Mar 30, 2020 12:15 am

Was doing a dummy booking for EWR-SEA and found a routing via IAD which lists UA1964 (IAD-SEA) as a 777-200 on August 8th. Is this a one-off or what?

That was the plan........before the Zombie Apocalypse......the 777’s we’re going to be flying ALOT of 1 off domestic routes and this was one.

I highly doubt any schedules more than a couple weeks out (if that) are reliable indicators of what will actually fly.

Yes, that was the plan - who knows now, though.

The 772 was to fly IAD-SEA as you noted and return on a red-eye SEA-IAD.

I was surprised to see this announced (pre-pandemic obviously). I didn’t know that much demand existed between DC and SEA to warrant a 364 seat WB. Perhaps it had something to do with Amazon ?

No summer schedule will be reliable right now. Look at how many cancellations we see everyday they can't keep up. We will see lots more cancellations as planes are parked and mothballed, they can't handle summer schedules right now.

Why isn't UA using the 777 to PHX?

Not to worry. There will be plenty of UA 777s in the Phoenix area soon.

This was I am sure based on Seattle's massive cruise ship loads during the summer. Unfortunately, with the way things are looking, I am doubtful it will happen now.

Everything is pretty much dead here...the lighter traffic at SEA is very noticeable. Hopefully some things bounce back heading into the summer, but I don't think the cruise industry is going to see a surge in bookings any time soon.

A lot of domestic widebody flying was scheduled before the virus hit the states - I’m assuming most of that will be cancelled

I would guess it's summer seasonal visitors more than business. Business travel doesn't have the same degree of seasonality.

And I join others thinking that an August schedule means absolutely nothing today.

In normal times, there is a lot of traffic to the Pacific Northwest during the summer. For example, ANC sees a big uptick in flights for the summer. Much of that traffic is related to cruises.

Years ago, pre-merger, I suggested that CO replace the 2 red-eyes each night from SEA to IAH with one 777. The answer I received was that there wasn't enough time available on the 777s (777 fleet) to do that.

Much of this IAD-SEA increase by UA was driven by a price war on the IAD-SEA route. Both AS and DL had been adding capacity on the IAD-SEA route and the 777 was part of UA's response.

Last summer, when the price war heated up, UA added a 4th flight on IAD-SEA. However, for this year, I think UA was going to try a different tactic by dropping back to 3x, but using the 777HD to combat the lower yields on the route.

Of course, with COVID, this is all irrelevant now. I suspect DL will probably abandon IAD-SEA (at least temporarily).

I also expect most of the 77H (domestic) fleet to be retired... at least the 13 1995-96 777-222s.

Yes, it's crazy how quiet things are at SEA. There will be a ton of smaller business that thrive and survive because of cruise season, fall apart unfortunately. Seattle becomes something special during the spring and summer months. I doubt we will see a single cruise ship this year.

A Christmas tree farm before Christmas is how I compare Seattle in the cruise months.

I agree that the cruise season out of SEA this year is more or less a complete write-off. And you are right about a lot of local businesses suffering, from little shops at Pike Place Market to the bus tour operators and the attractions at Seattle Center. It will be even more devastating for businesses in the small towns in Alaska that are ports of call - places like Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan

Prior to Covid full swing...UA had a displaced 777 on IAH to PHX.

Really tragic situation for just so many. the economic fallout is gonna be real.
Juneau and Skagway and are not places you can drive too, with no cruises it will be devastating for restaurants ,shops the whole towns. I can't even see cruises back in 2021 summer unless there is a vaccine .

Skagway is on the road system, you just have to go through Canada to get there.

Yes the smaller cities and villages will hurt especially with limited or no AMHS service. There are many in Juneau who bust their behind for 4 months every summer and then live on that the rest of the year. Juneau does have business like Alaskan Brewing or state government, but with oil prices this low the entire state will be hurting as oil is their primary source of revenue.

There will not be any Alaskan cruises until the Canadian ports open up again. With foreign flagged ships they are not able to do a cruise with only US cities thus their either stop in Victoria or begin/end in Vancouver.
