CRJ Jet Blast rips hangar out of the ground like a leaf

Mon Mar 30, 2020 12:50 am

Insane video doing the rounds of a CRJ doing an engine run that turned a hangar upside down. That CRJ pilot is gonna be mega boned. Pays to have a jet blast deflector.

Wouldn’t be a pilot, taxi-qualified mechanic. It’s impressive, the best I did in the C-5 was a van knocked over.

That’s impressive for a CRJ, sheesh.

edit: However that hangar must not have been properly built whatsoever.

I'd be questioning the construction of that hangar

That's why you have jet blast shields. That said, did no one anchor down the hangar to basically flip it over?

I'm no construction expert, but shouldn't the hangar be secured to the foundation?

SHOULD be, yes.
Was it? That remains to be seen.

I kind of enjoy how excited the guy is that he caught this on camera.

Side note: There is no way in hell that hangar meets the appropriate specifications if a CRJ can do that to it. Imagine a storm? or a much more powerful engine?

So...is the hangar a write-off, or will it buff out with some speed tape?

This link has some more photos, including one of a Cessna completely upside down! Of course, the tires on that Cessna almost look like Microsoft Flight Simulator 95 graphics when circles were a difficult thing to draw.

Would it be the case that a rear mounted "open" engine design on the CRJ could cause much more of a jet blast effect than an a wing mounted engine in an apple to apple case like with a ERJ-175 ?

Only time a CRJ engine is called powerful.

I smell a lawsuit between the contractor and the hanger owner.

Described in the article as being "in storage", but I think that is being very generous judging by the photo.

The funny thing everyone missed is why did the idiot in the cockpit NOT know what was behind him . Poor judgement! Can’t fix stupid.

The hangar had only one opening. The other three sides were closed, so the jet blast caused air pressure to build up inside. Once sufficient pressure got built up, the hangar just got lifted skywards.

All they needed to do was to provide an opening on the other side, so the air could have blown through the hangar.

Bad design, yes.

This is why foundations are important.

I am curious as to what the pressure is off the back of the CRJ engine. With that in mind, if it is approaching the speed of a tornado then I can see how it picked up that hanger and flipped it.

I also rather liked the Wamos 747 pushback (next video down the page)
Do you suppose the tire pushers were all shouting "V-Vamos !" (go!)?

And how many gophers does it need to pushback a 747? Looked like about 30 to me; I'm amazed it was so few.

Nothing to see here; move along please.

Wow, the Cessnas off to the side of blast were rocking but the hangar took the direct hit. What is amazing is that aircraft that was inside the hangar stayed put. Can't tell what type. It appears to be a tail dragger, Possible warbird, aerobatic or old GA type. Hangar it was in blew away but the plane inside stayed in place, probably with some damage though.

The C150 on it's back is not the plane I'm talking about. If you watch closely in the video, there is a tail dragger type plane that was in the hangar that becomes visible when the hangar lifts away and it appears to stay in place! And for those that underestimate the CRJ engine thrust, the CRJ700 in this video has about the same thrust as a DC9-10 or early B737-200.

Well, the local junk yard has a lot of jalopies "in storage" too!
