Mon Mar 30, 2020 5:23 am

Obviously there are still commercial and/or humanitarian reasons to keep it going.

It's mostly people coming back to China. MU is charging up to ¥30,000 per ticket.

And tell me why shouldn't they?

All countries whose citizens were banned from entering USA still maintain flights to USA, albert in a much reduced scale.

Not to mention the skyrocketing price both in pax cabin and below the deck due to much reduced capacity offered.

Because most air freight goes in the belly of passenger liners, which are 99.9% grounded, freight costs have exploded. Some airlines have reactivated a few widebodies purely for the belly space. Probably MU are carrying passengers but if you see a Swiss flight, or a BA flight, it might be a revenue service, but without pax.

Most airlines are maintaining bare bone long haul service on major routes. Freight aside, no matter how bad the situation is, there are still a small number of people who need to travel for various reasons. CX is also maintaining 2 weekly LAX and 2 weekly YVR for North America. KE is even running daily on JFK and daily on LAX. Although there are travel restrictions on "foreigners" for many countries (from 14-day quarantine to complete ban), there are also many people with multiple citizenship or residency who can (or need to) travel between specific countries.
