Apr 1 FX14 77F made wrong turn flew towards hill after take off from HKG

Thu Apr 02, 2020 8:29 am

Local news report that yesterday (Apr 1), there was a scare at HKG that FedEx flight FX14 taking off from HKG to TPE made a wrong left turn (where it should have turned right) after taking off and flew towards the hills in the Tai Lam area.

From the record on flightradar, it seems that the plane was never in danger since it's already at 4700 ft when it is over the hilly area (which tops out at around 1500 ft). However, that is definitely not along the flight path. It was foggy in the area as well in the last few days so the pilots would not see the hills. Just on Mar 30, a Chinese army helicopter crashed into the hillside in the exact same area, although details of that crash was not released.

You can see that it turned left almost right after take off, but it should have flown straight and turn right when it gets close to Disneyland. It eventually made a sharp right turn to re-enter the correct flight path.

You mean this flightpath?

Well something wrong with the pilots' navigating job??
Or perhaps the pilots decided not to believe the ATC nor the GPS in the April's Fool Day??? :spin:

Wonder if there's an ATC transcript lying around. Definitely does sound like a concerning incident.

The news report on TV stated that ATC asked the crews to expedite climb and told them there is terrain ahead multiple times after they made the left turn. It's kind of strange that they were already at 4700 ft so fast after taking off. Probably that's because of the "expedite climb" order from ATC.

I can't find the transcript online though. So just relying on the TV news report here.

Relatively short flight and if the load was light, the 777 will climb pretty quickly, so 4700FT isn’t totally out of the ordinary for normal operations.

I don't have official number of the load obviously, but given the loss of almost all belly cargo capacity, I would think these cargo flights are pretty full right now.

Full doesn't always mean heavy. FX moves mostly light parcels so they are more about volume than payload. Plus given the super short flight there likely was hardly any fuel on board.

Did anyone check the VHHH liveatc.net recordings for the times in question? Surprised that people above are saying there is no audio of it.

Packages are light, but if the cube is small you can get a lot of weight quick.

The crew will submit an ASAP or whatever FX calls their safety reporting system and that will probably be the end of it. Possibly some simulator training but I doubt it. Stuff happens. I was flying out of MEM once and the FMS didn’t properly sequence the RNAV departure and the flight director started commanding something I knew was incorrect (I was hand flying). I asked for a vector to rejoin further along on the departure and ATC was very accommodating.

My point is that if the crew was tired or any other number of factors, they could have missed something if the FMS was acting up. Couple that with a perhaps unusual or unexpected request in the expedited climb, plus the fact that things happen very quickly when you’re light and perhaps the crew was maybe just task saturated. We aren’t perfect and that is why the safety reporting system exists. We can all learn something from this and be better for it.

The crew did mention something about "incorrect switch", so perhaps they didn't set up the FMC correctly?

Definitely eerie as it could have been much worse.

Nothing that the Golden Monkeys at MEM can't cover and make it disappear.
Especially if the crew are long term FX payroll members.
We'll certainly not hear anything else about it.
