Yes, and it really makes no sense unless you're also going to keep at least a core cadre of pilots and maintainers trained on the aircraft, along with spares enough to restart the operation, which adds even more cost. Now they can release staff (sigh) and get whatever value the aircraft, spares, sims, etc have off the books in a down period when the market expects losses.

744 made sense when they were getting big bucks for premium seats on relatively short hops. Now, that's all changed. Plus BA has been on-boarding a lot of new fleets (A350, A320neo, 787, 77W) and more to come (779, 737?) so they already have a massive footprint. No reason to pay for spares to roast in the desert.

It would at least be good to to let them loose on the UK domestic shuttles for a day just to let the people see them one last time. This was part of the 2019 anniversary plan before certain travel correspondents and green political types deemed them to be gas guzzling polluters, forcing BA to pull the short haul trips planned. Perhaps they might just roll with it now, given that's a lot of 'pollution' to be saved between now and 2024 ? But then again, there may be no appetite for it amongst crews, staring at redundancies, abrupt or otherwise.

They have 787s and 350s and will fly one of the models depending on demand. COVID has demand suppressed so the 789 would likely be the choice for now.

It’s just sad, that the 747 fleet could not be “combo-fied!”

Seems like such a valuable paid for asset to let fall into salvage.
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

So sad it ended this way, a distinguished fleet with a great airline. This fleet deserved better, too bad BA didn't reconfigure some by ripping out Club World seats and adding Y seats. IF BA had the will they would have found a way.

Artificial intelligence likes to think it is wiser than the humans that created it. Kind of like those individuals in the aviation community who seem to believe we can actually control a pandemic!
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

I don't think an image of not being able to adapt to change and hanging onto old inefficient technology sends a positive image. It more so indicates that they are trying to still hold onto the British Empire days which are long gone.

@Arion640 Why would BA have the "will" to keep planes around they can't fill either upfront or down the back? When at the same time they have plenty of right sized planes available? The fact is the 744s are old gas guzzlers and can pay their way only if plenty of premium seats are sold. It sometimes seems if it was up to the people here in this forum, we'd all fly on stratocruisers, Concorde and MD11s... Do you all drive Morris Minors and Ford Capris? :lol:

Nothing evokes the Raj more than a Seattle built Boeing????

The A330’s wings and engines are British so that’s probably right and fair, it’s the correct size as well.

And since BA had already got plans in place to totally eliminate the 744 from their fleet over the next three years, with the last survivor going in February 2024, why should they make any effort at all to keep them in service when demand has fallen so catastrophically? Replacement planes are on order, some of these were actually delivered over the past few months, others are sufficiently far advanced in production to make deferral impossible. By the time traffic recovers sufficiently to need more planes or seats than the existing 772ER, 77W, 788, 789, A350 and perhaps A380 can provide, more A350s, more 77Ws, and the 787-10s (which were ordered to allow for expansion that isn't going to happen any time soon) will have arrived to help. Eventually the 779s will appear too.
Now if you can tell BA the date on which the entry bans and quarantine requirements which have removed most of the transatlantic travel the 744s have been servicing in recent years will disappear, they might have a better idea of how to manage their fleets, as it is, they do what they can with what information they have.

Absolutely the case, BA now have 6/18 A350s and 2/12 787-10s, at least one of the A350s and both the 787s arrived during lockdown, there are also 4 77Ws due imminently. With the remaining A350s and 787s, that's 29 widebody aircraft, which they didn't have in March which will arrive before schedules are back to normal, roughly matching the 747s retired. Boeing and Airbus will be quite happy (delighted I suspect) to sell them more planes, and if they need to accelerate deliveries productions schedules are more open than before. The 18 779s can now either be growth, replacing the oldest 777s or replacing the A380s.

The 747's phased withdrawal over that period just got moved forward, slightly sad to see planes go so suddenly, but it's the correct business decision.

We expect 744 to be phased out gradually until 2024, with fanfare when it leaves, spotters can still come to Hatton Cross for a few photos, next year would mark 50 years in service for the queen, KL, QF and BA all 1 year short of 50 years in service, without it, I so wish some of the similar aged un-refurbished G-VII class 772ER got the chop and swap with some 744 whom have more than 2 years left. Without Heathrow BA 744, Heathrow would be a different place, ironiclly, the last BA 744 I took photos of in Heathrow last year was G-BNLY Landor, delayed 3 hours ex LAS, without the delay I would have missed it, long loved the queen, you are missed.

Not my point at all, the poster suggested refurbishing them, they’ve just been refurbished!

At least the BA 744s had a bit of a swansong with the repainting of three of them into 'heritage' livery for last year's anniversary celebrations. Maybe a little flypast of four 744s in the BOAC, Negus, Landor and current [chatham dockyard?] liveries over Heathrow one afternoon could be arranged just to give her a proper farewell. It may be too late of course, I a not sure where the heritage painted planes are now.

BOAC and Landor are at Cardiff, Negus is currently at Heathrow.

There goes the (slim) chance of seeing the 744 at AUS again. I see BA is slated to restart AUS service in September on the 351 before changing to the 772 later in the fall season. Therein lies the future of commercial aviation: twinjets.

That's life. 9/11/2001 killed the 747 Classics, COVID-19 is killing the 744s. The now deleted internal email said 744 had 25% worse fuel burn than the replacements. It isn't about will, it is about math.

25% at worst. The 35K is pushing 38%. Definitely about math.

Has BA started to fly out the remaining 747s from Heathrow. The taxiway cul-de-sac along the Eastern Perimeter Road seems to clear out at a rate of one 747 per day.

They've been shifting them around the maintenance area this week, but all 9 are still currently at Heathrow. First ones expected to leave next week.

They moved a few briefly so they could get a 777 out. https://flic.kr/p/2jrsRMM

Psychology note: humans impute value to themselves, in varying degrees to other people, and to things. Hoarders impute value to things to a degree most of us find debilitating. So us aviation nuts control this by supporting air museums, and perhaps model planes in our hide-aways. It is sad to see the last 747 passenger models going out of service, I value seeing (but not meeting) Sutter at a Seattle Town Hall presentation.
Buffet: the airline business...has eaten up capital...like..no other (business)

G-XLEK appears to be flying as BA9176 CHR-LHR (per FR24).

[EDIT: Upon further investigation into CHR movements, it appears that this is not an exciting return of the BA long haul fleet, but that a number of BA 380’s have made similar trips CHR-LHR-CHR over the past weeks.]

When these five 744's get to leave LHR, they should each fly a couple of circuits and simultaneously do a few touch and goes off 27L and 27R.

The BOAC 744 flying from Cardiff could join, straight down the middle over the tower waving her wings.

The goodwill and PR would more than make up for the cost.

Both runways are back in operation for majority of the day. If I remember correctly, the Southern runway gets closed at particular times for maintenance work

27L has reopened during the day, but is closed from 8pm until 7 am overnight Monday to Friday until at least September, maybe longer depending on how the work progresses.

G-CIVH Was seen on flightradar24 today. It appeared to be moving on the ground but didn't fly. I flew on that one last November and it was due to be retired a couple of months ago. Anyone know when it will leave Heathrow?

Nice idea but with the state of industrial relations at BA currently, with IAG insisting the lay-offs and contract changes are necessary for the survival of BA, spending a load of money on a send-off of even the iconic 747 will generate very little goodwill within BA. Plus I could see a PR backlash - stories of ex-crew unable to pay their mortgage versus cash-strapped BA putting on fly pasts.

That's life. 9/11/2001 killed the 747 Classics, COVID-19 is killing the 744s. The now deleted internal email said 744 had 25% worse fuel burn than the replacements. It isn't about will, it is about math.


Too bad you cant snag a couple of those new business seats for the office when they start pulling them all out at the scrappers.

It's one of the very few 777s out there with more than 100,000 hours. G-INFO has it at 100,357 as of the beginning of May. UA's early ones for example are just a few thousand hours south of that.

Well, this was a 25 year old "A" model with over 100,000 hours and 20,000 cycles. I'm glad the old girl made it this far. This crises will not be good to her ER and Second Generation siblings even 10 years younger. Sad time indeed...
