WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Lots of changes. So I am assuming this means no QF flights between the US and Australia. I am assuming that is no flights from HA to the mainland too.

Interesting too that nothing from Alaska nor Southwest, and little changes from Delta, and almost no change from United.

Not only are most ORD routes cut to 1 or sometimes 2 trips but those fractional remainders (like 0.7 or 1.3) mean further reduced or no weekend flying. . O'Hare as a hub looks pretty much shut down for AA on Saturdays. I wonder if the emergency funding didn't have provisions to not drop cities if they would have simply dropped the majority of ORD-only feeder network.

Speaking of monkeying with data, earlier this week I spent a whole lot of time with the WN website looking at the mid April - mid May cuts they had put out there. Because the cuts are split between parts of two months I figured the cuts would be muddier to recognize here. I started with a few markets, then a few more, and eventually did 'em all. Looks like the United schedule change to pull EWR and LGA basically down to zero must have been filed late in the day. That would have been an annihilation. Next week, I guess.

Wowwww AA is really gutted. I wonder when DL and UA will publish the May schedule.

QF no longer fly to USA mainland in May? I guess that is the only thing they can do. Australia is closed to foreign traveller for a while. I guess this is the only choice.

Thank you for the post. There are too much information to digest! And can you imagine both DL and UA announce further cut? You may need another post to just list the individual changes with each of UA or DL.

It's telling that the smallest AA cuts are the hub-hub flying with the biggest being those overflying another hub. I guess they expect many of those in hubs will need to connect in a different hub to get where they are going with so many routes being cut for May.

Wow DCA AA hub pretty much closed for a May and ORD take a huge hit. I do like thought for the most part AA kept a majority of its hubs connected with the out stations

Not only are most ORD routes cut to 1 or sometimes 2 trips but those fractional remainders (like 0.7 or 1.3) mean further reduced or no weekend flying. . O'Hare as a hub looks pretty much shut down for AA on Saturdays. I wonder if the emergency funding didn't have provisions to not drop cities if they would have simply dropped the majority of ORD-only feeder network.

DCA hub operation seems pretty much closed for May. Looks like LGA is in pretty similar.

If I have time I may try to monkey more with all this AA data. Pretty remarkable stuff. :-/ It's amazing to think that markets like AA BNA-LGA and DCA-ATL could be dropped and not get any special mention, but you'd have worn out your * key if you tried to. Definitely appreciate you sharing all this stuff.


Speaking of monkeying with data, earlier this week I spent a whole lot of time with the WN website looking at the mid April - mid May cuts they had put out there. Because the cuts are split between parts of two months I figured the cuts would be muddier to recognize here. I started with a few markets, then a few more, and eventually did 'em all. They are posted in the WN thread.

I think it also missed the latest from DL. Keep in mind this report doesn't cover the current month, so both of those may have been April only.

Numbers I have seen show DCA is down more on traffic than any other large airport. Cockroach lobbyists staying home???

UA is gutting EWR from over a 100 flights a day to just 15 and severe cuts at LGA down to two flights a day

Enilria, wow do you have hand cramps after typing this out?? At this point if I had to fly anywhere I would check in this order SY, WN and then DL out of MSP. I don't want to be an employee in scheduling right now..route planning, crews, MX, etc holy crap..Stress City USA.

AA seems to have an interim schedule for May 1 thru 7 then another change eff May 8. DFW holds up ok with many flights still running daily however most other hubs see flights that are except Tue/Wed/Sat. Markets like ABQ-DFW have no 738's or A321's and ELP-DFW and COS-DFW are all Eagle! FAT--you lucked out, still two 738's to DFW.

OKC-DFW will be 5x daily all on Eagle. This route was 9x daily, 8 of those being mainline 738/319's.

AA at PHX going down to two banks per day, a 1000am westbound and a 300pm eastbound, with nothing on Tuesdays or Saturdays except to other hubs.

In April they are only flying LAX-HNL and LAX-SFO with only one daily flight. Maybe it's going to be extended.

I'm surprised the AS changes weren't in the mix; they were loaded yesterday. At least the 4/10 to 4/30 schedule, anyway.

Does AA have much of a domestic ORD-only destination set? I started looking at route maps and it made my head hurt...

The report doesn't cover current month. The problem is that the number of days I divide over starts to be wrong inside the month as it would need to correct for the number of days remaining in the month and that would vary depending upon where each Sunday falls as well. To avoid that issue the report has never covered current month. :(

It looks like American's Europe schedule is gutted to bare bones until October, when you begin to see less than daily service built back in to the larger, year-round European markets. Will be interesting to see how DL and UA build the fall to Europe.

The source I get it from only has a single weekly update unless they screw it up and do a fix. I would if that was not the case. I hear some of the industry schedule data vendors are now offering that if your work needs it.

Yikes. As a frequent DCA flyer, this is not good to see. Regularly fly DCA-IND, so no way that will be happening in May. I'm scheduled to be flying DCA-IND in June, August, and October. Fingers crossed for there being some normality then.

I expect a bigger bloodbath when UA puts out its schedule. As for TP, I'd be surprised if some routes didn't return, like BOS-LIS (nonstop; service via PDL remaining) and JFK-LIS, with EWR downgauged to an A321neo on some days and West Coast service cancelled.

As for Ravn Alaska...are they done?

Starting the 8th, ORD, PHL, PHX and MIA all do not operate other than hub to hub on Tue. MIA runs a mostly full schedule on Sat. ORD, PHL and PHX all do not operate anything other than hub to hub on Saturday as well.

DFW and CLT are the only full scale operations on a daily basis.

There is no Regional flying in LAX or JFK and DCA only has regional flying on the shuttle, no actual connectivity flying.

Could be. It was announced that all 9 of the 333s were being retired. I don’t get why ORD-ATH is going to operate.

There are quite a few ORD only spokes in the upper Midwest. ROC, DBQ, LSE, GRB, ATW, AZO off the top of my head that I can think of.

You have to submit changes to OAG about a week in advance. So it would show up next week.

You have to submit changes to OAG about a week in advance. So it would show up next week.

Not exactly true, changes that are loaded Fri night/Sat morning show up all the time in the OAG threads.

All the AA cuts were loaded on Friday night and they show up correctly.

That's probably why the DL cuts didn't show up. I think they just had another round of major cuts for April. I assume all these airlines are still working through how much they want to cut from each station since situations are changing so fast. Maybe we will see UA/DL make their major May cuts in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure WN/B6 are going to put in more cuts for May also. B6 only finished processing their 70% cut for April this past week.

Slightly surprised there aren't more of these on the southbound California routes (i.e. PDX-SMF-STS) given the way the LF has plummeted.

It looks like only the routes which depend on the Summer season have been cut till October. All the others are only cut for May. Thus not really to the bare bone. I think you'll see the same for the other airlines. Routes which are there to capture the Summer peak will be cut, the remainder will only be cut based on the expectation for the next month. Seems a wise strategy.

Great to see AS doing those tag-on's. Maybe SEA-ABQ-ELP and fill in the ABQ-ELP void that WN dropped several years ago.

This whole ordeal reminds me some of the cuts made in 1973 during the Arab oil embargo except this at least ten times worse.

ROW is now at 187 stored aircraft between AA, UA, and F9 since Mar 18.

UA loaded its schedule changes overnight Saturday. AA loaded even more changes last night. Due to timing, they're not reflected in this report. Not that it matters much, anyway, since the remaining flights still reflect way too much capacity for the level of traffic that's flying, and same day flight cancellations will continue...

For those who keep talking about UA cuts, again, since it is already April, they don't show up on the report. And they haven't pushed out the cuts into May yet...once that happens, it'll show on the report.
