Virgin Australia flights to JNB in 2010?

Thu Apr 09, 2020 8:47 pm

Did Virgin Australia have flights to JNB in 2010? I heard a rumour that due to ETOPS rules the flight from MEL to JNB was 1.5 hours longer than usual. The flight should have been successful due to large numbers of South Africans in AU/NZ (#1 immigrant destination for South Africans I hear).

Yes. This is true. MEL-JNB-MEL on a 77W. ETOPS regulations made the flight quite long and possibly too costly to justify continuing.

Yes, they had some ETOPS issues which increased the flight time. With JNB's hot and high issues, the diversion was also eating into the B77W payload.

Add to that, at the time SAA and Qantas had a bilateral codeshare between JNB-PER and SYD-JNB which didn't leave much of a market.

While there is a large South African population in Australia, there isn't in Melbourne. In addition to the EDTO requirements that made the route unviable, MEL-JNB never really made much sense in the first place.

Perth and Sydney have far and away the largest SA populations, and IIRC South East Queensland is also larger than Melbourne.
