FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

F9 extended their schedule from early NOV to JAN. Changes prior to that are versus their prior filed schedule.
This the first wholesale reduction we have seen for the AUG/SEP timeframe. This is very relevant because CARES Act participants can't layoff till October 1 and if you have no data on route performance prior to October, an airline isn't likely to add it back (keep the jobs) on Octover 1.

UA is operating some International service In May...
SFO-SYD/NRT
IAH-GRU
ORD-LHR
IAD-FRA
EWR-AMS/LHR/FRA/TLV

There are a few cities in Mexico as well as a few Central America flights operating as well. We’ve been discussing it over on the fleet thread.

It's depressing to scroll through these cuts. I suspect the skies will be pretty much empty this summer.

I am so surprised to see some European airlines keep some of the May schedule. I mean didn't US still require international arrives into certain airports? I just don't see how BA and IB operated so many flights as they intended to in May.

Stranger thing is that it seems to me that TAP is to increase flight between LIS and USA in June!

However, the Air China zero out flight between China and USA in May is very concerning.

The listed 13 is plenty of variety. It includes all of the top 15 U.S. int'l gateways for 12 months ending June '19 except FLL, IAH and MCO.

From what I saw on weibo (Chinese Twitter), CA is still keeping one weekly (Sunday) LAX-PEK, with a stop in TSN. All international routes to China is limited to 1 weekly and flights to PEK need to make a stop in nearby city for quarantine reasons.

For those who read Chinese, the list of international routes in May by CA can be found here: http://m.weibo.cn/detail/4494440875972612

Most of the long haul service I mentioned above never stopped operating. New in May for passenger service is ORD-LHR, IAD-FRA and EWR-AMS...which also never technically stopped operating but were cargo only for a while.

Not sure if, or why there would need to be, a press release etc but they are bookable on United.com. The three “new” routes start roughly the middle of May.

Central America/Mexico service is:
EWR - BQN/SJU/STT
IAH - BJX/GDL/GUA/MEX/MTY/SAL/SJO/TGU
Lots of the Latin America routes are less than daily.

With their blood tests being done, EK plans to come into BOS with the A380 straight away. They say.

Thanks for the updates Enilria.

AC's YUL transborder service is down to virtually nothing right now. It had looked like YUL-LGA/EWR/BOS/DCA/LAX would still fly on very reduced schedules during the crisis, but over the last few weeks even that limited service has dwindled down to nothing. This coming Friday there is one scheduled flight from YUL to each of LGA, EWR, BOS and DCA and nothing the following week again until Friday. Not sure why those once weekly flights are still scheduled. It looks like in May some service is scheduled to be restored, though given how much has been cut over the last few weeks and the extended border closure, I am not sure how much of that will actually go ahead as planned.

Enilria I'm not sure if there has been media coverage, UA announced some changes on Flying Together.

On Flying Together UA announced GLA, SNN, MAN, NCE, PMO and BDA were all canceled for the summer season. Perhaps a mistake was made when they filed the changes but UA has told employees all other international changes are on only effective through June 3, and they are still working on the remainder of the summer schedule. Hopefully with next weeks OAG report they will correct the mistake because this isn't what was told to employees on Friday evening when they loaded the changes into the system.

Thank you for all your hard work putting this thread together every Sunday I do appreciate it.

The only Washington-area service AC have planned for May is 1x YYZ-IAD. They're actually increasing (at this point) transborder capacity in May. Here's the link to all AC changes from 'normal' ops: https://app.meltwater.com/mwTransition/ ... newsletter

It gets updated (i.e., downward frequency adjustments) it seems like every 3 or 4 days.

For G4, are they suspending all ops in May?

Good morning enilria, thanks for doing the hard work again.

I also find it quite surprising AF is keeping MIA-PAP around still.

I'd imagine JAX-RDU will be first of many routes get chopped on a more permanent basis among the major airlines.

It looks like F9 is just canceling a lot of flights permanently. Looks like they will be significantly smaller by next year. Kind of makes me wonder the future of this airline.

Same applies for Latin Carriers. LATAM still planning to operate most of its May-Summer schedule? Are they getting as much cash as they can just to cancel later?

Indeed, this is such a great thread and a lot of work goes into it each week.

I was booked on PMO-EWR for June 10th. Got an email from UA last week that the flight was cancelled. UA processed a refund in less than 24 hours. Two weeks later, still waiting for AA to refund my JFK-FCO flight for May, which was cancelled in March.

So looks like G4 is taking the month of May off? Does that mean they aren’t taking a stimulus package? How does that work?

Right now many of their flights are still available for purchase on their website. Will be interesting to see if this is a misfile or if they truly cancel all flying for the month of May with a schedule load soon. I will say they did very little flying in April with numerous close in cancellations.

Why not. G4 owns their fleet so they don't need revenue to support aircraft payments. Everything except for crews and HQ staff is contracted out so they would not receive much from the "payroll support" grant section of the relief bill. It may be a better move for them to just shut down and keep a skeleton staff until tourism demand returns. I would not be shocked to see SY do the same.

However, the Air China zero out flight between China and USA in May is very concerning.

Thank you enilria as always for this important thread.

On the Delta front, it looks like they did another round of May trims on top of those registered in a last couple of weeks. Doing this incrementally likely helps them manage customer service workload, as they can keep the rebooking workload consistent as they do the cuts slowly. My guess is we'll see the June international cuts in the next week or two.

So depressing, and I cannot wait until we can be talking about what gets added back!

Thanks as always Enilria.

There's is ONE and ONLY ONE nice thing about all these cuts. I get to see route frequencies listed that we seldom, if ever see. Especially in markets that I normally don't follow.

For example I didn't realize the quantity of flights on BA on JFK-LHR. It's no wonder that is the most valuable airline route in the world.

Correct, and the May change is basically consistent with DL’s overall domestic strategy, which is cutting the longer flights and keeping something closer to normal frequency to the closest hub. I have not been following AA and UA closely enough to know if they are doing something similar but it seems like a sensible strategy to me.

F9 is owned by Indigo and these holding firms never hold on to assets, when they have no need to do what they can or done turning them around they sell it off or liquidate the assets. With these cuts It doesn't look like they will be wanting to invest much more in their airline division IMO.

Thanks, as always, enilria!

At Frontier it looks like nearly everything will be gone come August except Denver, Florida and Vegas. The only outliers I find:

PHL-ATL/CUN/DFW/IAH/JAX/LAX/RDU
EWR-CUN/RDU
PHX-SAN/SJC/SLC
ATL-CVG
RDU-ISP
AUS-IAD

Certainly Frontier has long realigned its network seasonally, and you certainly can't fault an airline for retreating to long-time strengths at a time like this. But it's still kind of remarkable to see nearly nothing else of the massive web they've built over the years being retained. Lord knows what air travel demand will look like four months from now anyway. But I thought it was notable to see how (except for a handful of Philly routes) pretty much it's Denver, Florida and Vegas.

Can't speak for other airlines, but at mine we are loading schedule changes incrementally so as not to overload customer support functions with customers requiring changes/refunds.

Just taking a look at the frontier changes again. Not only are there a lot of changes, there seems to be a change in their strategy also. I see a lot more daily or twice daily routes and a lot of fewer 2/3/4x weekly type of routes. Again, everything seems to focus on DEN/LAS/Florida/CUN and quite a few on PHL. Looks like EWR is almost all gone. That was fast. ONT is almost completely gone. LAX is almost gone. DFW is almost gone. BOS is almost completely gone. ATL is done to almost just Florida. CLE/CVG/CMH seem to just be down to Florida/DEN/CUN.

I'm not really sure what you call this strategy. Seems like they are looking to quite acquired by someone. I know they were supposed to have agreed to the CARES money, but I don't know if they will actually go ahead with it and keep the employees.

Same with G4, seems like they just decided to stop flying. the minimum service requirements were really unfair against these 2 airlines. I always thought they were the most likely to not accept the terms.

Enilria, do you still see any route operational for G4 in May?

Amazing stuff WN is still operating so many LGB flights in May. What are they thinking. I'm 90% sure B6 will be down to under 5 flights a day at LGB. WN can have all the slots at LGB. I think there will be more available gates at LAX coming out of this.

All that's left on LAX-MCO is UA. Not sure why they are the last ones standing on this route, as I thought DL would be. DL just got rid of their last one, as I received the email about my May flight last night around 1am pst. Now I'm connecting in ATL.

UA and AA handle most of Disney's corporate travel but LAX/SFO-MCO are not operating right now on UA.

AA 2279 looks like it's still running.

No shock to see OO/UA end SCK-LAX. That was a crap flight when things were good. I think it is over already anyway.

Central Valley towns need another model for air service. Fares are too high. I don't see why Allegiant doesn't run a daily to LAX.

What blood test? No way would I ever submit to a blood test to an airline in order to travel. I can’t believe the US government would allow this.

Thanks as always! TAP is pretty optimistic? Recently added 3 new long-haul routes and now adding more frequencies?

I'm surprised that TP is not soon launching service LIS to JNB and/or CPT.

They did blood tests on one flight out of Tunisia.

There isn't a mention of it on their website currently but looks like they are making passengers go through a thermal (temperature) check.

UA hasn't put in the May domestic cuts yet, I heard it will happen tonight. Right now LAX is only doing hub flying and I would expect that to continue.

Thanks for that impressive work, Enilria!

Looks like only LH and its family are sustaining a bit more than a bare skeleton (if only) of international flights to the USA…

I noticed that too. The RDU focus city in particular is getting slashed, along with a lot of East-West stuff that doesn't touch LAS, DEN, or MCO.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Also keeps the MIA-based 320s slightly active. Are there two AF 320s based at MIA?
