How are airlines taking advantage of parked fleets

Mon Apr 20, 2020 10:58 am

Just read an article where Hawaiian are doing some upgrades to their A321 fleet: https://simpleflying.com/hawaiian-a321neo-upgrades/
How are airlines in general making the most of this situation. Seems like a good time to do upgrades and deferred maintenance.etc

If airlines have already have purchased the required materials, then yes, it is a great time to complete any repairs or mods. If they are in financial distress and purchasing materials for not required "nice to have" repairs or mods, they are likely wasting resources and should be preserving cash.

Most airlines are preserving cash and only doing required maintenance (unless the materials were already acquired).
That's not how this works! That's not how any of this works!

Parked airplanes are allowing the US3 to evaluate and accelerate aircraft retirements. We've seen that with AA and the 767/757, E190, A330-300, and now the first 40 or so 737-800s delivered to AA, with likely more aircraft to follow. I could see a handful of the earliest 772s parked permanently. UA has signaled some 757s and 767s may never fly again and we could see UA also retire some of its older 737-800s. DL has announced it will phase out the MD88/MD90s and some 757s and 767s are also likely to never fly again for the airline.
