Boutique Air PC-12 Down at Mesquite KHQZ

Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:39 pm

Reports showing a Boutique PC-12 landed in a field and caught fire after making an emergency landing at Mesquite airport near Dallas. Aircraft had just taken off from DFW to MSL and squawked 7700 before attempting to make the field. They landed just short of the threshold of RWY 18.

Looks like the pilot did a great job getting hee down in the field in mostly one piece. Hope there are no serious injuries!

So far it's been reported that one was airlifted without life-threatening injuries. This is unconfirmed but I have seen reports that this was a repositioning flight and there was only 1 person on board.

1 passenger doesn’t mean it was a repo these days

They don’t have scheduled service from DFW-MSL, I don’t believe

You're right, it is not bookable on their site.

Surely this means the one person being the pilot?

Their web site now says that: "This afternoon Boutique Air has had an incident on a non-passenger repositioning flight with one of its aircraft. There were no passengers and no fatalities on this flight."

Boutique serves MSL from ATL. Guessing this was a reposition swapping the ATL aircraft? Glad no fatalities!

The wings were torn off and burned.T he fuselage remained intact.

The video I saw included the trench the plane dug. At the end of the trench it looks like the fuselage made a 90 degree turn with the burning wings further back of the trench

Some news reports say the person on board died, while others say the person was hospitalized.

Can't tell which is right..

Something eerie about this accident:

I have Flightradar 24 on my iPhone, but just yesterday I enabled push notifications for when any aircraft sends out a distress signal.

Today, I got a notification that this flight (4B902) had signaled an emergency. I opened the app, and watched him circle slowly while descending.

I enabled the 3D "live view" and it appeared the aircraft might have been lining up to land on the nearby highway. He eventually turned toward the airport, but didn't seem to have enough speed or time to get there.

It was an incredibly surreal moment, to be watching an airplane go down in real time. I felt sick to my stomach, both for the sake of the passengers, and also for my voyeurism into someones potential last moments.

I have since disable that feature.

Just wanted to share, and to send my best wishes to anyone that was on board.

Are there any updates on the condition of the pilot?

Audio from KHQZ tower. Initially I thought this video was in error - but it's not. Sounds like he almost made the field but needed a 360 to lose altitude and didn't make it back around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsESUOWz6Fg

Really glad to hear he's going to be ok.

Flew with this exact frame a couple of years ago, sad to see it crashed but happy there was no loss of life.

The PC12 is an amazing plane in its capability to fly relatively fast and relatively slow.

Looks like the spinning prop did spin the fuselage prior to full stop. Quite impressive sight.

Commendable pilot, nonetheless, for preventing what could have been a very ugly accident regardless of what caused the accident. Bravo

Thanks for the update - great news considering.

Was it confirmed he was the sole occupant? I read one report saying there were two other company people onboard.

I tried to make a boutique Air thread (about their service and such) and it got deleted, why?

The audio and the blancolario synopsis is pretty hairy. This young pilot was way behind the situation and could not make the right choices to get to a safe landing. He had good opportunity to land, but he turned down several options given to him until it was too late. He's lucky to be alive.

I agree. In a single engine showing signs of engine problems might be a sign that landing ASAP would be the smart option. Give me vectors for the nearest airport and get me down. I can tinkle and troubleshoot the engine all day and night on the ground. Hopefully we will learn more, but I do think the investigation will lead to some form of fault on the pilot.

Since it hasn't been mentioned in the thread, it seems the stick pusher saved his life.

ATC appears to have provided as much support as they could. I'm impressed by how professionally they handled this emergency.

With regards to the 360, it seems that S-turns (or really any maneuver that allows more precise altitude manipulation than a full 360) would have been preferable.
