WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

Incredible. May 2020 flying levels is Hopefully something we never see again for a whole variety of reasons.

Not a whole to comment on other than various strategies of where the respective airlines are leaving bare bones service.

It will be interesting to see when they roll forward June cuts.

Another poster in two other threads reported AA is adding back CLT to LHR and MUC on the 777. Along with a couple of other international flights from DFW it was loaded last minute.

Yeh, at this point UA and DL have pretty much cancelled TATL summer. I guess if they can't even expect 60 people a flight at decent fares to cover variable fuel and maintenance costs, this is what we get.

The new Alaska tags are only operating from May 3-9 at this time. Quite possible they'll be extended in next weeks massacre.
Gotta love the nostalgia going on here; ABQ-SAT was a big Continental route in regulation days, ICT-OKC was a Braniff route, and IND-STL a TWA route.

Interesting strategy by UA regarding IAD and EWR. Most smaller markets stay connected only to IAD in May, not EWR. IAD even gains a brand new route (IAD-PQI)!!

This is like the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones, Saturday night massacre is an appropriate title. Airlines across the board have taken a machete to their May schedules in many cases the cuts are deeper than what we have seen in April.

I know the city of CYS (or state of Wyoming, or both) is subsidizing AA for this. Its probably exempt from the CARES act. I think RIW and SHR are in the same boat however UA* is staying in both for now with one-stops to DEN instead of nonstops. A real shame that CYS just opened a nice new terminal.

Is your database able to show the flights that are flown? In particular TATL would be interesting, I would guess that the list of cancelled routes next month is longer than the list of flown routes.

What are the odds most of the UAX routes from EWR return in the future? I knew prior to this UA was shifting a lot to IAD and as you can see in today’s report most have temporarily shifted.

Pretty good, at least for a substantial portion. Remember, partial of the rationale for moving EWR services to IAD was EWR overcrowding. That evaporates for the foreseeable future. When traffic rebounds the EWR hub will still be standing, and NYC-xxx O&D will still be standing.

IMHO part of the current shift to IAD is caused by the very high rate of infections in NY and NJ. Even if passengers are willing to risk exposure at EWR, it's prudent to minimize crew exposure. Now, some have argued recently that WAS confirmed infections haven't peaked yet so who knows how long this lasts.

It’s on Page 10 of the final order.

“The Department will... provide an industry wide exemption for circumstances in which direct financial support agreements between communities and airlines have ceased after... declaration of a public health emergency.” The order goes on to reference service at RKS, which I believe is also subsidized by the state of WY.

Many markets, like my hometown of CID, will only see one Delta flight a day. 1 CR9 to MSP and that’s it. Looks similar for MSN, DSM
As well. Lots more routes chopped from DTW. How many flights a day are being run from ATL? Would be curious to see.

Looks like G4 reversed course. It’s nice to have their service in case someone needs to fly and have that option. I know our family has snowbird friends in AZ and FL who are to be coming back next weekend.

I wonder if AA will make deeper cuts in May? They have been barely running one daily flight in my market. It seems to alternate too between ORD/CLT/DFW

Seriously? Pretty drastic increases compared to last year. Are cargo-only flights registered in the OAG?

TP will only fly to BOS(A321neo LR), EWR and MIA(both with A339) at least until August with some frequencies per week. Probably next week we will see some changes in the systems

That brings back some memories as I used to fly the Brasília for Mesa, based in SHR, via GCC to feed Denver back in 1995. So what’s old is new again

Appears NK had to agree to resume Niagara Falls and Plattsburgh service to get CARE $. Since both were being flown at the time of the shutdowns and were merely scheduled to be discontinued.

Thank you. I forgot to check OO's exemption filing. Oops. So the fact that this route was scrubbed completely makes it seem that AA isn't planning on going back. Is OO switching mainline carriers like they did for MEI and PIB?

Rather strange to see DL increasing SEA-YVR in May.

FYI AC have cancelled all transborder flying until late May. I suspect it will be extended beyond that though.

CYS was suspended "indefinitely." The community is gathering funds with hopes of restoring service someday.

The DEN-Wyoming UAX service, DFW-CYS, and PHX-RAP are all OO prorate routes funded by state and local governments.

During these times I don’t know if it’s relevant anymore.

There are so many changes, most temporary, some not, that trying to have a discussion on route planning and weekly changes almost seems like spitting into the wind.

Again, I appreciate the work and I’m not knocking it in any way...But I wonder the relevance at this point

Few things look at this.
I think AA will shrink MIA more than people expect.
WN still looks to be cutting way too little compared to other airlines.
Looks like UA/DL are a lot more certain about lack of demand in the coming months for long haul stuff vs domestic stuff.
For DL, looks like obvious move to cut the recent adds to SEA right before this all started. All the ATL to small west coast stuff that didn't make sense are cut like they should be. HNL stuff will route through LAX/SEA now. All the secondary TATL stuff is gone for this summer. One just needs to see how small DL is now at BOS (down to ATl/DTW/MSP/JFK) vs SEA (which actually got a few adds) and LAX to see where DL is going to shrink coming out of this. No reason to have a second TATL hub in northeast. MIA experiment is already rolled back.

What does G3 still have going to america?

Really strange to see TP adding capacity.

UAX will come back. If anything, UAX is needed to lower capacity and maintain schedule. IAD on the other hand is most likely going to get significantly downsized.

Does anyone know why EI seems so optimistic? They seem to be flying to all of their destinations, with a reduced schedule of course, but still it seems surprising to see even BDL and MSP loaded.
Also, I read that EK will not resume any scheduled flying until July 1st now so I think what’s loaded today will be removed next week.

I think it is highly relevant for two reasons:

1. Historical: people are going to research and write about this event for literally the next century. This is a tremendous quick reference to see how a core industry responded to the worst black swan it has faced. I write about industry and crisis for a living, and believe me, things like this thread are hugely useful as a historical artifact.
2. Practical: many of us work jobs where we commute for a living, and sometimes on multiple markets out of multiple airports depending on the nature of our seasonal work. I and many others use this thread to keep tabs on service to all of our commuter airports. Right now, we are trying to figure out how and when we will be able to begin to actually operate our working lives again. This thread is one of many resources people use to evaluate our options - because all of the info is here with one click.

On a more detailed note, enilria and others, how are you reading the way Delta loaded the transatlantic cuts? For the routes that zero out through January such as AMS-TPA/MCO and JFK-LOS, am I right to read those as dropped routes - at least for now? It looks like the axed all the summer seasonal flying, which is to be expected. But I am trying to figure out where they are signaling long term cuts. LOS is likely to be a tougher market both because of the oil price collapse and the US immigration restrictions - and thus I assume they are pulling the plug on the JFK market?

B6 is dropping all service to SJC. Isn’t there something in the CARES act that says you can’t take the money and drop cities? Is B6 not taking the money?

CYS was suspended "indefinitely." The community is gathering funds with hopes of restoring service someday.

The DEN-Wyoming UAX service, DFW-CYS, and PHX-RAP are all OO prorate routes funded by state and local governments.


RAP was covered by a SCASD grant, I don't believe there was much funding on the local side. From what I recall, they stopped receiving funding earlier this year (or maybe Q4 of last year) because the route was above the minimum revenue guarantee.

OO pulled all their CR2s from the AA system which is why you see all of those cuts (with PHX-SGU going to a CR7). Once the economy recovers I'm sure OO will jump back into the pro-rate game as recently it has been very profitable for them.

Pretty good, at least for a substantial portion. Remember, partial of the rationale for moving EWR services to IAD was EWR overcrowding. That evaporates for the foreseeable future. When traffic rebounds the EWR hub will still be standing, and NYC-xxx O&D will still be standing.

IMHO part of the current shift to IAD is caused by the very high rate of infections in NY and NJ. Even if passengers are willing to risk exposure at EWR, it's prudent to minimize crew exposure. Now, some have argued recently that WAS confirmed infections haven't peaked yet so who knows how long this lasts.


I expect you’re right. People don’t realize just how far NYC flight counts have fallen. Yesterday, BNA had more (Part 121 passenger) movements than EWR and LGA combined. WN’s relatively lower number of cuts is part of the reason for that, of course, but it’s nevertheless a stunning datum.

Is SJC considered the "same city" as SFO, the CARES act only requires maintaining service to one airport in each city.

SJC is in the SF Bay Area metro. Airlines are allowed to consolidate flying within metro areas, such as LA, SF, WAS, NYC, under the CARES Act.

Enilria: Despite what some have said about if this thread is worthwhile any more, please keep it coming! Yes its been pretty dramatic the last few weeks and probably will continue for awhile as the big three have yet to hack their June and beyond schedules. I think the downward curve is now flattening and we're all beginning to understand what lies ahead. For me, I'm loving the tag-ons. Fill in those gaps that are without nonstop service and maintain the thin hub to spoke routes with one-stop service. They may not have much traffic but fuel is so cheap and the airlines have so many extra aircraft now, I believe it can be done.

I wonder if we will see the return of the "milk runs" . I remember the old Frontier Convairs doing PHX DEN via Winslow, Gallup, and Farmington. I could see WN doing some of this.

There are few things out there is see from a scheduling perspective, and basing on what DL is doing as I am most familiar with their network.

1. Suspending the summer seasonal TATL routes; these likely had to be done in coordination with AF/KL as rebooking is like to to be through AMS / CDG; these routes likely had proportionally more advanced bookings due to the leisure nature of these markets for summer travel but many people are probably going to end up just taking the cancellation refund due to the near term prognosis of the world.

2. Cutting almost all hub overflying except for core big city market, in many cases pulling down smaller markets to the closest hub for May.

3. Domestic cuts for June haven’t been made or loaded yet; I suspect a combination of just gettin May in place, still figuring out what June capacity may look like, and flattening the curve of rebooking/cancellation/call center demand

It’s going to be a new world in these threads and on this forum for years as we talk about routes that were flown for years before this event that may not return for years to come, if ever. Particularly all the long haul seasonal stuff.

surprised there's not a big ** on G4
they seem to be stepping on the gas in May and re-starting many of the flights they had zeroed out...presumably CARES reasons? or do they have reason to think sometime in May their demand will tick up? Either way, it's counter to all the cutting everywhere else.

It appears CLT is now AA's largest hub with way more flights than DFW. I wonder why that is and how long it will continue?

Looks like DL has gutted domestic connections thru DTW. There are cuts in ATL but the cuts in DTW are disproportionately high. Interesting strategy to protect as much traffic as possible in ATL since most connections from places like CID, MSN, and DSM make more geographic sense thru DTW than ATL.
