Your Favorite Now Gone Airline

Sat Sep 04, 1999 4:58 am

As we all know Eastwind Airlines is shutting down on September 7 after a long history of customer complaints, shoddy performance, and bad service. Although they are not my favorite it gets me wondering about other airlines wgo havent made....
Mine would have to be Braniff. With a fleet of different colors and good ole southern serivce, i miss this now bankrupt three times carrier.

Cascade Airlines. I was fairly little when they went out of business but one of my first plane memories is being on a BAe 748, I believe it was, going back to Seattle. I can't remember where we were but our car broke down and my mom, sister and I flew back while my dad waited 4 days to get the car fixed. I kinda wish they had stayed in business just a little longer so I could have gotten on one of their BAC 1-11 flights. But, they were poorly managed and Horizon Air's attemp to buy them fell through and they went bankrupt.

Regards!

I would have to say Pan Am but now they are back in business!! Anyway we all know that they are no where near close to the old carrier. I sure miss those 747-100s and 200s waiting at the JFK terminals.

Pan Am, but I never flew on them so I can't say if their service was something to be missed. I miss the livery, the blue meatball, like CX747 says, the 747-100s lined up at LHR T3, and all the history and swagger of the "world's most experienced airline". Of airlines that I HAVE flown (and that's a lot), the one I miss the most is Air Europe, who had a great fleet (737-300s and -400s, and 757s) and a great hub (LGW) and foxy flight attendents and a great livery (still seen on Air Europa and Air Europe italy). Over-expansion, boardroom infighting, poor management and a CEO who had a colourful (to say the very least) personal life (used to get hookers to dress him in a nappy and spank him, amongst other things).

My favorite is Air Florida. It was such a sight to see those blue and green planes parked together in Miami, especially when one of their DC10's taxied in. I also like Eastern during the time they had white planes instead of silver. These planes were an awesome sight too. Other favorites were PEOPLExpress, ValuJet and Northeastern.....who could forget their pink and blue cloud planes.

WinAir Without A Doubt.

I loved WinAir. They had awesome service and did alot of community work. For a while they were booming! I was lucky to fly them all the times I did. I lvoe the 737-200's also. The 737-200 has to be my favorite plane so that helped in my choice hehe.

Cheers

I really miss Western and PSA. They were both great Calif based carriers! Loved em! Had a big flying W on one and a smiley face on the other. You don't see things like that anymore. I'll tell you though, you definately know when you fly Delta who the former Western Airlines F/As are

My favourite airline would have to have been Business Express (BizEx). The airline had a great little heart as it puddle-jumped throughout New England. Soon to be assimilated into American Eagle you must reflect on the past of one of the most lucky post-deregulation survivors. BizEx was quite a little endevour.

Dan-Air Services - based at London Gatwick and took millions of Britons on vacation. I used to work for them so I may be biased! ;->

WinAir - but it looks like hopefully Allegiant will take its place - and even better will use DC-9s instead of 737s.

Mahalo Air - their web site still says "all flights temporarily suspended" but they're long gone.

Reno Air - never flew them but I miss them anyway. Just waiting for AA to break up its route network, just like they did with AirCal...

BRITISH CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS without a doubt. Those tartan uniforms with the white gloves, candy before takeoff to stop passengers ears from "popping" and being small enough to feel like a friendly family airline. It was so sad to see them gobbled up into the BA mega-corporation, even worse seeing their once proud Golden lion adorn the old British Airtours charter airline.

Boo hoo

We miss you BCAL!!

I liked Braniff. They were easy to spot because they had those "Flying Colors" airplanes. Their inflight service was Excellent.

PSA..The Smile Planes

Thu Sep 09, 1999 6:34 pm

As a kid, I remember flying only on PSA. Not sure how their service was or any other details. I just remember sitting and waiting for our plane to arrive at BUR and take us wherever we were going. I used to get a kick out of the smiley face on the nose.

North Central particularly in the wintertime when they flew from Green Bay Wisconsin into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, some flights operating with Convair 580's and some DC9s. Cancellations were few and far between in spite of terrible weather and heavy snowfalls. Nowdays the regional service up there gets cancelled for heavy frost even though they use a swedish built aircraft!

Great snow geese those NC Convair's! Experienced pilots and friendly cabin staff!

I loved the look of PSA! I grew up in San Diego, one of their primary hubs, and used to love watching the smiley-faced planes coming and going. A real treat was when their L1011 used to fly in, infrequently. I heard that aircraft had a lower-deck lounge. I also miss Western. My grandmother used to fly over from Phoenix on Western's Boeing 720s in the early '70s. Ah, memories. :-) And who can forget Hughes Airwest "Top Banana In The West," with its bright yellow planes? I've got to do a model of one of their DC-9s someday.
