An Avianca plane lands in Tokyo for the very first time

Fri May 01, 2020 6:40 pm

An Avianca Boeing B787-8 Dreamliner aircraft landed for the first time in the history of the airline, at the Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, a fact considered historical.

Flight number 288, coming from Bogotá and Los Angeles, had a stopover in Tokyo, since its final destination is Shanghai, China to collect sanitary supplies and transport them to Colombia

They didn't have the crew to fly LAX-PVG non-stop?

First, and most likely the last, at least for a long time.

My mother is from Barranquilla, back in the 1970's AV had their route map showing "future" routes from San Francisco to Tokyo and Rio to Johannesburg, South Africa. None of those came to fruition but it would be quite a route if AV could fly from Bogota to Tokyo.

I saw on the tracker sometiems 3-4x daily PVG-MEX flight on AM a few days ago. AM does normally fly to Asia pre-corona-virus to NRT & ICN.

Airlines are avoiding having crew quarantined in China and duty hours exceded. AA, AC, UA, AM are all stopping in NRT. DL is stopping in ICN.

There are more flights to NRT and PVG planned.

The 787 being loaded in PVG.

All long haul South American airlines are flying cargo out of China these days: In addition to Avianca,

AR is doing EZE-AKL-PVG a few times a week.
LA is doing SCL-AKL-PVG

LATAM Brazil has also been doing some charters to Asia as well (Bali)/
Keep calm and wash your hands.

I think this is true of many countries as they try and source sufficient medical equipment/clothing - for example thebasource.com reports that BA has been operating cargo flights twice daily from PVG (773s) and once daily from PEK (772). Mildly interesting is that the BA Peking cargo flights are from Beijing Capital airport whereas their passenger flights had relocated to the new Daxing airport.

I'm sure China is centralising their medical cargo at PEK (where the facilities are much larger) rather than split between PEK and PKX.

LATAM ones will be made with 777-300ER on GRU-AMS-somewhereinchina-AMS-GRU/GIG. First one scheduled is PT-MUJ, should departed yesterday (1st) but still at GRU.

Also two of the 777 stopped at AUH for maintenance will go straight to China to get suplies before go back to Brazil, no date yet
