FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Good Morning Enilria! Thanks again for your hard work!

At first glance, appears AA's June 4 schedule is pretty similar to the May schedule. Still no Eagle operation at LAX. The PHX flights will go daily instead of the except Tue/Sat in the May sched.

One good thing about Southwest's new reduced schedules, all flights now show the same all seven days per week, no more totally different schedules on the weekends.

United did announce internally this week most of our international schedule will be suspended until late October our seasonal routes are on ice until 2021 at the earliest. Even that plan may have to be scrapped depending on what this virus is doing and the travel restrictions countries have in place.

Thank you again enilria I appreciate your dedication to these OAG threads every Sunday.

Thank you for posting.

June's schedule is very depressing in terms of international travel.

How many flights do Delta have left in LHR for June? In fact, how many TATL flights DL is still flying in June? That might be a much short list than the flights cut!

Even AA is cutting a lot more LHR flight. Both AA and DL have cut LHR-JFK to minimum. I guess both airlines do not think LHR-JFK would do any good at all in June.

Maybe both are anticipate the current USA travel ban will last until end of June?

Yeah, although fortunately I don't have to type it!

Intl is dead for a long time. Sadly... I'm wondering how safe 2021 is...

I think right now DL has 1 single ATL-LHR

UA announced close to 5000 pilot displacements yesterday.

Mostly off widebody.

Long story short, These cuts (at least for UA) arent temporary

:twocents: I wonder if it would be a shorter list if it only listed what is still flying?
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

Thank you, as always, for your hard work - this is very much appreciated!

Interesting that BFL is keeping one daily PHX and one daily DFW (that grant for the second daily flight must have gone away!) while UA is down to just one daily DEN rotation with SFO canceled. For an already very-small market, I would have assumed that BFL-DFW would have been one of the first to be pulled...I mean, it's been pulled during good economic times - what's keeping it going now?

Sad but not surprising. AKL-EWR is off the table for peak season (meaning it probably won't start until late 2021 at the earliest), and LAX-LHR is done early.

I wonder if AKL-ORD will make it through this...

No, 8 of the 13 are operating scheduled pax flights (DTW-ICN and DTW-HND) and cargo flights (DTW-ICN-PVG and LAX-ICN-PVG).

UA has really given up on S20.

As for NZ 1/2 (which was to be reassigned to AKL-EWR)...I expect that to be postponed until NS21.

c'mon Delta, a lowly 763 for your only DTWAMS! That would keep me from booking even longer. Why use the worst product during these times? squeezing hours out of dying planes sure, but did all attempts at CS just go out the window? Put the good plane on, really any other airplane

Porter has suspended all ops until June 29th so I am guessing this has the last 3 days of June frequency at the moment.

AA is re-adding a number of regional flights out of DCA for June— a big change from May where PSA/Piedmont has 0 combined flights, and I think Republic has 1.

AA has never been able to make LAX-OMA stick--this is at least the second or third time in the past ten years they've dropped it, not to mention downgauging.

This really is the new norm , don't expect to see July be any different , we will get more massive cuts coming. Hope (fingers crossed) August is better but I know international won't be, domestic I just hope a little better. The airlines are not cancelling further out on purpose because they are low on cash and the this allows people to request refunds.

It's going to take a while for these airlines to spool things up again. Plus, I think they're going to analyze and re-analyze daily for a long time. At this point, at no fault to Enilria, the OAG won't be very reliable in the coming months just because of the fluidity of schedules, especially for those schedules way in the future. But you deal with the data you have. If anything, it's a good source of trends and what the airlines are thinking over time.

All Eagle flights for LAX are not operating in May and only 3 PHX/SFO flights in June. This has nothing to do with that specific route.

Southwest seems to be flying the most aircraft today, more than twice as many as DL and UA.
At one point today, on a Sunday Afternoon, Republic had 19 planes in the air. Out of a fleet of 220-ish.

It will most likely be a lot longer than August. There is close to zero business demand right now. And while you will see an uptick in business travel once things slowly start to open back up again, a lot of businesses will not allow employees to fly until a vaccine is found, produced, AND administered to a large portion of the population.

The liability and potential spread is too great of a risk. In addition, most businesses have slashed travel budgets for the remainder of the year to help minimize the financial impact that covid-19 has had to their business. Given this scenario, businesses have opted for alternative means to conduct business that circumvent travel in the short term. For some businesses these alternative means may become a long term solution as well, which is bad news for the airline industry.

The lack of a vaccine may not stop a portion of leisure travelers, but business travelers were a significant portion of revenue for airlines.

Any news on July and august bookings. While I expect them to be way down I anticipate they will start creeping up as long as there’s no additional large outbreak. A lot of people are going to be looking to visit friends and family later this summer.

Good analysis - and what’s really bad for the legacy airlines is that the business travel was such a huge chunk of their revenues. Good luck getting a 15+ cent RASM on what travel remains...

I agree leisure travel will start to recover much quicker - which is going to benefit the ULCCs and LCCs more than anybody. The big guys can slash fares to compete, but it won’t help them cover costs...

We have a summer house that we travel to with family. We are in that boat however most in our circle aren't willing to fly if service is so limited. If the schedules push out like this I think people may shy away from travel just because there's so few options. Should be really interesting how schedules are built in the next 10-15 months or so.

Agree with everything you said. My company laid off our road warriors (only laid off employees). No travel in 2020. Not allowed to book anything in 2021 but travel budgets for 2021 have been slashed alot already. Business travel is gonna take a major hit. Hard to even see when it will be back, ie why the airlines are permanently retiring so many planes.

Argentina has gone for the nuclear option and is not allowing any flights (domestic and international) until September 1st, despite firm protests from IATA last week. This spells trouble for some local carriers as well as international carriers that may choose not to return to Argentina for the remainder of the year or longer.
Keep calm and wash your hands.

I think it will remain pretty accurate, nearly all the changes this week are for next month, I expect that to continue (for the most part) for a while since demand will continue to be unpredictable.

I have seen/heard a few rumblings about late summer bookings picking up steam in the past week, but for the most part I think airlines are still being cautious, as to not instill false hope from employees/investors

This is from Gary Kelly earlier today:
"I think we've seen the bottom here in- in April. Each week after the first week of April has gotten successively better. I think May will be better than April was, and I don't think June will be a good month, but hopefully it will be a bit better than May. And then we're looking forward to July and August, and we'll just have to see. There are bookings in place. But those could easily be canceled. So it's really one day at a time."

Sooo, is it just me or has everything hit bottom? Cuts into June don't seem AS severe for high frequency markets and such like they did for May and while I see a lot of dropped routes, it's much less drastic than May.

There is something very odd about that; I thought AF wasn't even scheduled to fly CDG-DFW this year. I am not so sure many of those June flights won't be cancelled soon.

Sooo, is it just me or has everything hit bottom? Cuts into June don't seem AS severe for high frequency markets and such like they did for May and while I see a lot of dropped routes, it's much less drastic than May.

I think they’re have been June cuts in the last several threads.

Yeah, but the schedules still seem rather healthy.

Looks like DL is already cutting FSD and LNK from ATL permanently (or at least the rest of the year). Wonder if we will see any more cuts like this? I have a feeling DL isn’t done adjusting its June schedule.

Delta has hardly begun to adjust their June schedule, I'm sure a lot more will be cut, probably by next weeks thread.
