Why are they routing these to LAX for an overnight vs. flying nonstop SYD-MHV?? They've done SYD-VCV in the past with other retirees (763ER for one, was a program on 60 Minutes Australia, vid on YouTube).

MHV does not have customs. They clear customs at LAX. When KLM 747-400M PH-BFS flew AMS-MHV, they stopped over at ORD. Saudi 772s and MD-11Fs flew to SNN-VCV-MHV. VCV does have a dedicated customs facility, allowing international flights while MHV does not.

Ah, OK, thanks for the explanation. What a bloody expensive thing for airlines...just to clear 2 pilots (or even 3 or 4) thru immigration & customs...item # 7,123,428 on the list of idiotic things in this world. At least SV could do pre-clear. at SNN where they may have needed to stop for fuel anyway.

Isn't it the aircraft that's being imported through Customs? i.e. because it's on a one-way trip into the US, it's a permanent import.

Yup. Looks like weather may have been an issue, it's been pretty cloudy in SoCal today. I remember that Qantas 747-400ER VH-OEG flight LAX-MHV was delayed several times due to rainy conditions, as there is no ILS at MHV. Weather forecast at MHV tomorrow at the time of arrival (12PM local) shows sunny conditions (only 4% cloud cover) but with 34mph wind from the west (!!).

Any signs of WN returning their 737's at VCV to service? I checked Flight Aware and saw nothing, yet.

The last time I went to VCV was May 9, so nearly 1 month ago, so I haven’t seen anything personally. I have also not seen/heard anything on social media regarding the WN 737s.

After 5 passes at SBD and a VFR check at Fox Field, Northrop Grumman L1011 N140SC finally flew into MHV today on her 3rd try. She was definitely a sight to see today.

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/airc ... c#24a6877e

Side note: Omega 707 N707MQ is at the ASB Hanger at MHV, while Raytheon DC-9, Virgin Orbit 747-400, and Coulson 737-300 are parked on the flight line. In addition, PH-BFS has been moved out to the 'mass storage' area and has been removed of her registration. The three Qantas 747-400ERs (VH-OEG, VH-OEH, VH-OEI) are parked on the Western edge of the airport. VH-OEG has had her tiles painted over, signifying that the 747s will not return to the Qantas fleet.

(Mods, please allow as this is the only photo anywhere of VH-OEG's markings painted over)

Security is tight so any picture I can get is from a distance, anyway there’s better pics online. But it’s parked just west of the intersection of Finnin St. and Flight Line (check Google Maps).

According to gabik001 on the Chicago Aviation Thread, there's a rumor that the next KLM 747-400 ferrying AMS-ORD before retirement will be on Monday, June 15. However, this Dutch forum states that PH-BFY will ferry AMS-ORD-MHV on Monday, June 22. Currently unknown if these are two different frames or the same frame with two different dates.

According to flightradar24, Northrop Grumman L1011 N140SC flew MHV-EDW today after doing some test laps over China Lake. Departure 9:50AM, arrival at EDW 12PM. No flight plan was filed, and no 'positive identification' showed on flightradar24 or FlightAware. The aircraft is now blocked from tracking on FlightAware, which was available just a few days prior when it flew SBD-MHV.

Ok, thank you for the tip! Looks like *some* travel may be picking up for the summer travel season, albeit a much smaller one than normal.
