EGYPTAIR operated a non-stop between IAD an EBL yesterday

Tue May 05, 2020 7:40 pm

COVID makes another strange routing...
Was this the first non-stop between the US and Iraq? The country isn't even IASA certified. I do wonder how many from undeveloped and developing countries are returning home from Europe/North America/the wealthy countries of Asia Pacific, especially considering the healthcare systems there.

EBL was served by a few European airlines before the crisis, including OS. Erbil, as the capital of the Kurdish part of Iraq, is relatively safe and serves as a gateway to Iraq for many foreign businesses. I wouldn't be surprised if expats are trying to return to their home countries; either because there isn't much business going on anyway, or because they're hoping for better healthcare at home.

Is this to repatriate citizens?

Erbil is the safest city in Iraq, the new door to the country, so perhaps some shuffling of US staff going on?

Just a reminder to keep your posts on topic. It’s not a debate on the US healthcare system and will remind all of you this is an aviation forum if you wish to discuss things like that take it to non-aviation

Erbil has a pretty sweet, new, modern terminal and a 15,000' (4,800m) CATII runway. Their plan is/was to make Erbil the next Dubai. I flew thru there quite a bit on my trips in/out of Basrah and Baghdad and it is very safe. As a US resident you can get a VISA upon arrival which is a huge plus for many.

As long as "Iraq" is their address, it will probably be a non-starter for most travelers for quite some time.

So it mentions on the airport website that this was a "special diplomatic flight". Hmm. You have to wonder who was on the flight if that was the case.
