WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

Interesting that DL seems to be canceling its plan to move to PKX for a while, with a planned resumption of PEK in September and October. Maybe they’ll move at the IATA summer/winter split.

The Australian - USA market is temporarily dead.

It also looks CX is not operating any flight between US and Hong Kong in June. Is that a mis file?

DL’s early June cuts on coastal hubs + focus cities. In May they made another cut closer in. Again, SEA has far away the most service with LAX trailing quite a bit. I think it’s clear at this point DL is fully intend on fighting it out at AS and getting as many seat flown as possible.
SEA - 60 flights to 30 destinations
LAX - 39 flights to 19 destinations
BOS - 15 flights to ATL/DTW/MSP/SLC/JFK/LGA
RDU - 7 flights to ATL/DTW/MSP/LGA
RDU - 9 flights to ATL/DTW/MSP/LGA

EI BOS-MSP JUN 0.0>0.3[0]
This has to be a mistake right?

NK returning some June?
I believe they said due to booking trends, they are restoring some June capacity so they are cutting 90% instead of 95% of capacity.

WN gives up on Intl for a while
From the southwest thread, “WN is restarting service to CUN, SJD, MBJ, HAV, and NAS on June 7. PVR is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 8 and the rest Oct. 30.”

weird that FLL-HAV is showing 0s here and same with FLL/HOU-MBJ and LAX/OAK/SAN-SJD

AA reinstating some Eagle flights back to LAX effective July 7 (other than the few to PHX and SFO mentioned last week). They're showing up as fractions (ELP-LAX .8, ABQ-LAX 1.6) since they're not starting til July 7 but they will be daily flights (ELP-1, ABQ-2, ...).
LAX-OKC was an Eagle market and is now showing as mainline A319!

MSP isn't an allowed port of entry currently right? EI likely have a specific customer for MSP pushing for service, cargo or pax, so tagging to BOS would be sensible

They need SEA as a pacific gateway.

They need JFK as an Atlantic gateway.

They need LGA to supplement JFK.


Beyond that everything else coastal is gone going forward

Does anyone really think Norwegian is going to actually operate all those flights listed in June??? Seems unlikely to me.

Wow DL at CVG dropped 20 routes which is just about everything.

weird that FLL-HAV is showing 0s here and same with FLL/HOU-MBJ and LAX/OAK/SAN-SJD


DL has to keep as many seats in/out of SEA as possible as that is how SEA allocates gates. If they cancel and AS doesn’t, AS will gain gates.

Could authorities see in all these routes still being offered any sign of "commercial fraud" by Norwegian?

It is quite impossible Norwegian will be able to fly a route like BCN-LAX when they have internally informed crews at both ends of these routes they are not longer needed and their bases shut down. Crews haven't been fired yet, but the inner agreements between the Norwegian Group and its subsidiaries have been cancelled. So, what's the point in selling tickets days after that decision was made?

I know many airlines everywhere are making difficult for customers to get refunds, instead they offer vouchers for future bookings with the airline. This situation with Norwegian looks to me quite ugly: if you want to fly LAX-LGW and pay for that, it doesn't make any sense you could end up with a $400 voucher to fly on an airline which operates right now just a little bunch of short-haul routes in Norway. Well, you could always book 20 rides for Oslo-Bergen, one after another...

These aren't reflecting reduced frequencies, it is showing that DY has pushed the start date of these routes back until mid/late-June.

You could say the same about nearly every other carrier as well, hardly any US carrier has updated its July schedule yet, and DL didn't put out its June schedule until Saturday morning....I certainly wouldn't consider that commercial fraud

Looks like DL rolling forward it’s May Schedule. UA has some deep cuts as well some cities lose DEN and IAH flights all together. Of note near me I see my hometown loses its 3 DEN flights. DL still one flight a day to MSP. DSM losing IAH

Correct. All airlines are more or less doing the same. However, DL is more likely to be able to amend the booking and offer reroutings for their passengers than an airline which has been refunded this week as an operator which flies just 7 planes to domestic places in Norway until minimum next year.

I suspect Norwegian is getting customers money but 100% they know they won't fly any of those frequencies, and either they could offer any realistic alternative route.

DL will be down to just one per day out of ABQ, a SkyWest flight to SLC. The regionals are really saving AA, DL, and UA for the CARES Act at cities that traditionally had mainline flights.

NK said in their call they were looking at increasing June/July.
DL and AS both have not cut SEA as much as it needs to be cut. DL is trying to kill AS. Sucks.

No. It's an A320 and an A330 is on BOS-DUB. I think they just didn't file the "duplicate" field indicating it is a code share appearing under another carrier's filing.

If you look, everything is cut in half. They probably just pushed the restart 15 days.

Am I right in deducing that DL is actually a little smaller in June than it was in May? It looks like several smaller stations are just being cut back to service to the closes hub in order to maintain CARES eligibility. I commute out of DAY, for example, and we had ATL in May but it is gone for June, with DTW being the only link to the system.

Also, what is the scoop on DL restarting LAX-SYD in June? Is that for real, or something that will get trimmed closer in?

I see 163 flights a day by AS out of SEA. A lot of flights. That seems like it will have to be trimmed further.

As for DL, I mean this just shows they are clearly valuing the need to keep SEA large through this. Outside of BK, I see no possibility of them giving up or downsizing SEA. In fact, I'd expect their SEA operation to recover to pre-COVID size fairly quickly. Which are definitely not the case for BOS/CVG/RDU. Even LAX will take a while to regain its old size based on what they are doing here.

DL seems to view SEA as an integral part of their network to capture demand from PNW and AK.

It appears DL is starting to do the cuts at smaller stations. I purchased a bunch of fire sale flights ATL-MSP-BJI (Bemidji) for the summer to go to my parents lake house - ultra small station with only 2 daily CR2 flights to MSP and no other carriers. Was surprised to see DL maintaining the 2 flights to BJI up until today but this time they cut it down to one daily which royally screwed up my schedule for June so that trip is going to be cancelled - feeling my scheduled trips in July and Aug are going to be the same story.

Not sure how I feel about UA adding flights in June to the state of Hawaii. Hawaii has asked tourist to stay away for the time being but yet UA is adding flights in June.

AA seems to have come to their senses and have canceled their planned June resumption or their ORD-DUB and ORD-ATH routes.

Could authorities see in all these routes still being offered any sign of "commercial fraud" by Norwegian?

It is quite impossible Norwegian will be able to fly a route like BCN-LAX when they have internally informed crews at both ends of these routes they are not longer needed and their bases shut down. Crews haven't been fired yet, but the inner agreements between the Norwegian Group and its subsidiaries have been cancelled. So, what's the point in selling tickets days after that decision was made?

I know many airlines everywhere are making difficult for customers to get refunds, instead they offer vouchers for future bookings with the airline. This situation with Norwegian looks to me quite ugly: if you want to fly LAX-LGW and pay for that, it doesn't make any sense you could end up with a $400 voucher to fly on an airline which operates right now just a little bunch of short-haul routes in Norway. Well, you could always book 20 rides for Oslo-Bergen, one after another...


Isn't DY voluntarily grounded until 2021? Doubt you will see ANY DY TATL service for the rest of 2020 and probably unlikely they will ever fly again.

I'll be curious to see where the ASM rock bottom is in major global markets. I can't keep all the airlines cuts lined up in my head, but I think the overall ASM footprint will be smaller for U.S. domestic in June that it was for May - even though total boardings will likely be higher. I think it will be also interesting to see where the rock bottoms are as a comparison to how countries and regions have done with the response to the pandemic. I would assume that you will see Asia-Europe, and especially markets like Germany-South Korea, Taiwain, Singapore, etc., hit bottom and rebound far earlier than other markets because of the success that those places have had in controlling the virus.

In the current environment, I'd find it surprising that the Port wouldn't temporarily waive the usage requirement. LAWA has done this for LAX - in place until the end of May, but likely to be extended. I believe another poster commented above that the aggressive scheduling may be more indicative of SEA's place strategically to DL.

AS appears to be adding flights over their May schedule. Do they see some demand or are they calculating that this is the amount they need for next year's SEA gate allocation? People are getting itchy to get out of their houses, particularly in the Puget Sound area. We were the first in the US to feel the effects of covid and many people started self-quarantining in early March, before the 'official' requests from local and state government. I know a number of people that are starting to think about travel out of SEA later this summer and fall.

if they are doing 163 departures out of SEA alone, that's at least 325 flights they have going in and out of SEA a daily basis. I'm sure they have non-SEA flights. Their number of flight will probably be only 60% down, which is a huge increase over May.

Even if people in Seattle area are looking to get out, i doubt demand has gone back to 40% of 2019 level.

It seems crazy to me SEA will have that many flights. Probably more flights than JFK/LGA/EWR combined or more flights than LAX.

Agree that it seems crazy! I don't think they'll actually operate all of those flights...I'm sure a lot will be cancelled in the end. Maybe call it an 'aspirational' schedule by both AS and DL. ;-)

I think that after this, Delta will scale down Tokyo. Of the 7 destinations that had Tokyo service on Delta, 3 were on the West Coast, 2 were in the North, 1 was in the South, and 1 was in Hawaii. That's a lot of overlap for a long haul international destination that is not a hub for any of Delta's partners.

I noticed that Delta added DTW-BGR which is a route they cut back in January of 2018. They brought it back last summer for a dozen or so round trips in the summer flying on only on Saturday’s.

After this they pulled it out of the schedule for good.

Now it seems to be daily for the entire month of June. No service from JFK/LGA which may explain this.

Very strange if you ask me.

I noticed for June, that the SkyWest OO routes that were pro-rate/at-risk and non-EAS for DL are switching to Endeavor 9E. The CR2 markets like ERI, AVP, SCE. I haven’t looked at all of them but a sample.

I believe Skywest said they are removing 55 CR2s from Delta flying by then end of 2020. A subset of those aircraft are owned by DL but at least 30 are owned by OO
