AA (Skywest) Operating New Shortest Flight in America, EGE-ASE through June 1, 29 Miles

Fri May 15, 2020 10:11 pm

Per The Points Guy, Skywest will be operating a Round-Robin Whistle stop DFW-EGE-ASE-MTJ-DFW through June 1st. The shortest segment in the US.
The EGE-ASE segment is 29 miles, scheduled 35 minutes. To compare, on the ground, with no traffic, it is an 80-90 minute drive over 65 miles of mountain roads.

This one could be fun to ride EGE-ASE-MTJ, just for the experience and mountain scenery on a clear day!

Funny that it’s a 29 mile flight that probably takes the full 35 minutes with all the departure and approach maneuvering

Yeah those mountains alot of work for such a short flight. They will still fly pretty high. What a crazy opportunity to fly between those airports. I am not flying right now but wow! I would totally be on this in any other time.

Funny thing is that the air route from EGE to ASE actually has to track pretty close to the road route. The approach into ASE goes right down the Roaring Fork Valley from Glendale Springs.

Actually, the shortest scheduled flights in the US has to be 9X/MW (Southern Airways Express/Mokulele Airlines) flights from LUP-MKK on Molokai in Hawaii. 9 miles! I believe itʻs an EAS route so itʻs still being flown.

Looks like a fun route - wheels up to wheels down this afternoon was actually 32 minutes - more than the straight-line distance in miles!. Northeast climb out of EGE, then to the southwest, loop around while beginning descent to go northwest, and then southeast for the landing in.

Both my shortest flights under 25 miles, are JHM-OGG flying an Island Air Twotter back in the 90's at 14nm & the other was MKK-LNY on HA D95, that was an artful arch at 23nm, air time on both, 8 mins.

I was actually on this flight the first day it operated. It was empty DFW-EGE-ASE, picked up three pax in ASE that continued to DFW.

That being said, If you ever want to see a flight attendant puke multiple times, fly EGE-ASE on a day with 20G30 winds. It was bumpy all of the legs.

Here's a playlist of videos I took if anyone cares. You can see just how steep the departure out of ASE was with five pax onboard.

Thanks for posting the videos! Rare flights for commercial airline.

Not sure if you noticed but the one says departing Eagle for Montrose in the title and its def looks like ASE not EGE.

Definitely believe those were some bumpy flights over the mountains.

For me, the shortest flights I ever took were from MIA to FLL on National Airlines. 18 nautical miles and IIRC, about 10 min in the air. A few airlines flew that route back in the day.

HA was running OGG-JHM with the 'Ohana AT4s for a few months in late 2018 into early 2019. Considered routing that way once from HNL to visit my brother for the weekend who was living in Lahaina at the time just to experience such a short flight. I ended up taking the HNL-JHM flight instead because the only routing HA had available at the time necessitated a nearly 2 hour layover in OGG.

FedEx fly's a 757 from TIJ-SAN five days a week. Takes about 10 minutes. I can watch the whole flight from my house.

Ahahahah, that’s hilarious.

Flight wouldn’t make much sense if it wasn’t for the catching the leg to DFW part.

MIA-PBI is back with Frontier. I booked it for a sightseeing flight of South Florida.

You do the whole round robin in one day?

I might try it before it ends if the loads are low enough so I don’t get stuck because of the May cap on flights.

Couple quick questions if you check this …..

1. Did you same crew all the way from DFW back into DFW?
2. Where did you get off and recheck back in if you did? Wondering what's the easiest airport to run off, check in, back through security (if I have to, maybe one of those airports you don't have to exit the gate area) and board again to continue onward?

Thanks for your help, might try this flight out this weekend.

Originally the same crew did all the legs in their position but now the CA and FO swap positions in ASE (not sure the logic as to why). The whole crew continues but they swap roles.

Ok thanks, that helps a lot. Was wondering of FA start and end in Dfw and you answered that part, that way in one of the cities I can run off to check right back in.

Not revenue flights, but I was able to watch dozens of AA 77Es & 763s do something like that —DFW to AFW— before they closed out the AFW shops. From DFW, it was an 11 - 13 minute flight, and you literally can watch all of it from the Ramp Tower, or even the Skylink Trains.

I used to fly the Continental Houston to Houston flights, intracity scheduled service IAH-EFD (and before that they did HOU-IAH) fun times. Similar times to these flights some days.

Which of those airports is easiest to get off and right back on after checking in with agents? Never been and trying to prevent having to exit and reclear security with such minimum time on the ground.

Do any of those CO mountain airports use a jet bridge for the Cr7?

Sounds like you're trying to nonrev this. I've nonrevved through several of those airports. I don't think I had to leave security at MTJ but I know for sure that I didn't have to leave security at ASE. There's a little sign for connecting passengers when you walk in. You'll take a left when you enter the terminal instead of a right to get to baggage claim.

Edited to add: neither MTJ nor ASE has any jetbridges. I flew through MTJ on a 737 and didn't have one!

Actually i think one that might be even shorter is the Mesa (United Express) HHH-SAV leg thats part of a HHH-SAV-IAD routing. The HHH (techinically HXD, i suppose) is 30 miles. In an EMB175 .. pretty cool.

Wow. So it’s cheaper/faster to load up that plane fly it international Instead of trucking through the border.

I get it, took me two hours to get though once, however a few times I’ve driven it and they waved me through without checking anything. However I guess trucks may get more scrutiny at the border than a rental Prius.

Tell the gate agent you’re a non rev. I did a similar thing on accident once at Roswell. When I landed I found out my GF was in a car accident And needed to get back to DFW/TUL. I told the agent and she told the TSA people, they said to wait in the boarding area to clear the list. Most places are pretty friendly to employees.
