Qatar returning A350 leased from LATAM?

Fri May 22, 2020 1:34 am

LATAM's 4 A350-900 leased to Qatar Airways are flying back to Brazil now (route: DOH-CNF). They are A7-AMA/B/AQA/B.

And I assume those A350s will head to Delta as a part of their deal with LATAM.

IIRC, Delta's taking 4 existing ones on the LATAM fleet + 10 yet to be delivered from Airbus, including some A350-1000s ordered by LATAM Brazil (TAM). It makes sense they would be these 4.

That would make sense. 3 of these 4 are 278/280t ready. The middle one is 3yrs old and probably 272t

A7-AMA is not one of the 4 aircraft currently in the air. That aircraft is still in Doha. The 4 being flown to Brazil are A7-AMB and A7-AQA/B/C.

So why bringing them to CNF instead of to the USA directly?

You'd need to ask someone from LATAM for the exact reason. I'd imagine that if indeed those are the ones going to Delta, LATAM may need to work on them before onward delivery to Delta.

Makes sense. CNF is Latam's maintenance hub.

Move engines to correct airframe check paperwork logs and end of lease fees etc... so all aircraft are as factory condition. Stsndard procedures.

Delta isn't taking any LATAM A350-1000s. :shakehead:

In March LATAM cancelled 4 x A350-900 and 6 x A350-1000, while "Undisclosed" (aka Delta) ordered 10 x A350-900, so the ten commitments that Delta agreed to take have all been switched to -900s. I assume the reason for actually cancelling and reordering is because Delta can probably command a better price with Airbus than LATAM.

That's mostly a paperwork thing it makes it easier then having three people involved in the transaction but Delta is taking th four older aircraft directly from latam

So that would mean that these will be gong to LATAM rather than DL then? Makes sense since Delta does not need the capacity now and would get brand new frames from Airbus with the order swap you described.

How many left still in Qatar? 2 Frames now, I suppose?

What was the original pre-COVID retirement date for the youngest, 2010'ish 777-200s? Maybe they will need some additional A350s to offset the loss of capacity of the 18 777s?

I doubt it - post pandemic, demand will be weak for a number of years. Besides, DL has already taken over 10 A359s from LATAM. So that should be sufficient.

They could try to get their hands on some cheap used airframes and defer delivery of factory-fresh A350s - unless they can be reasonably sure that they will not need the lost T7 capacity in the foreseeable future at all.

Per several articles published at the time of the deal, they are acquiring four already delivered A350s.

The Atlanta-based carrier will buy four A350-900s already delivered to LATAM and assume 10 of the airline’s delivery positions for the aircraft. The aircraft move is part of a more than $2 billion pact with the South American aviation giant announced Thursday.

Nope. It is a G3 maintenance base. CFN is always used as a customs clearance airport for airplanes in Brazik.

Rumours here in Brazil pointing that two will go to QSC (LATAM MRO) for storage and another two to GRU to be part of the active fleet
