FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

It's funny that AA (and WN) are maintaining the most schedule, yet AA is in the worst financial shape. Seems very risky.

"The Summer of George" refers to an episode of Seinfeld where George escapes being engaged (don't ask how) and looks forward to the best Summer of his life only to be in an immediate accident where he may never walk again and spends all of Summer in therapy.

It’s actually the Summer of George after he gets fired from the Yankees with a 3 month full pay severance package allowing him a Summer of doing nothing before looking for a new job, only for him to have is accident made worse by the onset of muscle atrophy from his week or whatever of doing nothing.

Is this just being cynical but AS thinks SEA is going to be so bad they want to serve DEN from somewhere else? Otherwise, this is a long-standing gap in their network and a sign that UA needs to be extremely careful as to if they'll even have market share coming out of this and don't get eaten alive by AA/AS/WN.

Sarcastic I assume? If the point was eliminating a competitor they've done a lot of other carriers a big favor at a cost of billions to themself.

At least a more "normal" hub-to-hub schedule now insofar as I can say normal..

Even above normal in some cases. People must be eager to hit the beach.

Not sure if DL will cut further. But here are the coastal hubs/focus cities # of flights after initial cut.
SEA - 76
LAX - 57
JFK - 36
LGA - 47
BOS - 23
RDU - 13
CVG - 12

SEA seems to be coming back nicely and LAX is seeing a big increase over June. NYC is coming back with LGA first and JFK is quite slow. BOS is still just hubs + 1x to MCO/TPA. RDU/CVG are just hubs

I’m glad DL is upping ATL to SRQ to 4 daily in July! Definitely a good amount of tourism is coming back to the area.

And I’m surprised LOT is going to open WAW to IAD at this time. Hmmmm

Thanks for doing this every Sunday!

I noticed that during this past week G4 has reduced their LAX July schedule substantially. Such as IDA, BZN, FSD that were supposed to be operated starting in June/July has been pushed back to just a period of two weeks in August. Didn't see that posted in your list, and there might be other close in changes with G4.

Minor correction, CVG is 15 for July:
5x ATL
4x MSP
3x DTW
2x LGA
1x SLC

Double the flights from June, let's hope it continues

At this point, it may make more sense to compare month to month changes under these circumstances, and NYC is actually seeing some relatively big increases as the region emerges from lockdown. JFK averages around 15 departures a day now and is going to 36 in July, while LGA is barely a dozen or less flights a day currently (headed to 47 daily by July). Some non-hub flying is being brought back to LGA including MIA, MCO, FLL, TPA, DCA, ORD, PIT, RIC, DFW, IAH and BNA. JFK is seeing some longer haul domestic and Florida flying coming back (SAN, LAS, DEN, increases to LAX and SFO) as well as a slight uptick in international (frequency increases for AMS, CDG and TLV, and LIS and ATH not being completely axed yet for the summer). With uncertainty around when many EU countries will lift their travel restrictions for Americans, most of the European flying had to go...

Would you prefer they wait until 3 weeks out from the beginning of the month to cut the July schedule as they had been doing? The reality is that UA/AA will soon make similar cuts to their July schedule. AA has been somewhat less aggressive than DL, while UA cuts have been similar to DL's. AA has been making their cuts about 4 weeks out from the start of the month, while UA/DL were doing it 3 weeks out for the previous two months. Hopefully, DL will add some flying back to July if things improve enough (just as they for June after the June schedule was published a couple weeks ago).

These are just their initial cuts. They have been making another cuts closer in. And also, they cut things back so much that they are bound to recover quite a bit now that nyc Is seeing not that many cases anymore.

What is happening with QR? Is that a misfile? Basically QR is exiting ATL, IAH, MIA and PHL until winter season. I would have thought QR would keep one of PHL or MIA as they are AA hubs. And QR did say week ago that they will fly to AA's hub to feed into AA's domestic flights. I can understand they cut June and July. Cut right through to October almost seems that QR is giving up on those routes.

Thank you as always enilria for the exhausting work.

I am reading that right that Delta still thinks that Athens and Lisbon are going to start in late July? It looks like Madrid and Milan (among many others) don't come back at all in July. Obviously this is all speculative, as it is only a projection that the Greek beaches are going to be opened to tourism. My guess is you may see those routes fall away as well.

Also I see a second DTW-ICN. Would I be right that this is being flown in part to serve cargo demand?

How likely do you think it is that these focus cities (especially RDU and CVG) are going to return to their pre-Covid sizes? Since you had pointed out that those are the only two that have regained service to only to hubs so far I compared the new July schedule to what had originally been planned (total daily departures with number of destinations in brackets) and the difference is huge:

CVG 63.9 [30] -> 12 [4]
RDU 72.8 [27] -> 13 [4]

CVG will still see its departures cut by 81.22% and destinations offered by 86.7% in July, which is supposedly already part of the recovery trajectory... At RDU it's -82.14% for departures and -85.19% for destinations.
Does this spell the indefinite end for DL's focus cities?

Things are headed in the right direction in the US, and they will continue to improve until we reach flu season when we will know if there will be a second wave. If there’s not a second wave everything is going to go through the roof.

I believe Greece and Portugal have indicated they would welcome tourists this summer without a mandatory quarantine so I guess Delta is hanging on to these two at the moment. For now, both JFK-ATH and JFK-LIS are planned to restart the second half of July at 4x weekly. They also downgauged JFK-ATH from an A333 to a 763ER given the paucity of cruise traffic.

As for the second DTW-ICN, this is actually part of their attempts to resume flights to PVG from both DTW and SEA (hence you also see ICN-SEA going from 0.5 to 1.5 in June). What's loaded so far are DTW-ICN-PVG and SEA-ICN-PVG - hence from an OAG perspective, what you see is an increase in DTW-ICN and SEA-ICN but with DTW-PVG and SEA-PVG going to zero. Like the all-cargo flights they are operating currently into PVG, they involve a 'techincal' stop at ICN for a crew change. I believe this is done so that the crew do not have to layover in China (I think China may still have a restriction on foreigners staying over). The second DTW-ICN and SEA-ICN are both not for sale - for those flights, they are only selling to pax traveling DTW-PVG and SEA-PVG.

Not at all. These reductions are no worse than any other city on this list (CVG is at 15, that data is wrong). CVG/RDU are a fraction of the size of SEA/BOS/LAX/NYC, so it's unreasonable to assume they will be reduced similarly. About half of CVG's seats were to other hubs pre-COVID (8xATL, 6xDTW, 6xLGA, 5xMSP, 5xBOS, 2xJFK, 2xSLC, 2xLAX, 1xSEA = 37 out of 82 flights), so even with the recent improvements, CVG/RDU aren't going to see non-hub routes for another few months.

Leisure routes will return first and demand is already picking up on these (hence the 5x to Atlanta). Given the business contracts between Cincinnati companies and DL, what routes return will be based on what they fill. The most recent updates from CVG/DL were that some routes will return starting in September.

They’ve flown that route before. It’s been awhile, but they have

AS BOS-LAX JUL 1.0>0[2] AUG 1.0>0[1.8] SEP 1.0>0[1.0]

Could/should have happened a while back. AS was weak on this route for a long time.

Thanks as always for the Sunday read, enilria!

I noticed this while searching DL's app yesterday and thank goodness. They added an early morning flight back to the schedule. I was grumbling last week that the June schedule is only 1x with a late afternoon departure to ATL with very limited connections...basically shooting themselves in the foot. This should allow for many more options.

This looks like connections to the AS flights to PVR, HNL, OGG, and others.

DL serving AMS only from ATL and DTW.
I thought we may see a frequency from JFK but looks like DL is leaving that for KLM.

It looks like they are also letting VS do most of the haul to LHR in July.

I think PDX-DEN has been a hole in AS network, but UA, WN, and WN covered it well.

PreCovid, even with F9 cutbacks, there were still 12 flights a day scheduled.

Around 50?

I got 47 for a thursday in second half of June using google flights. Maybe closer to 50 for Mon/Fri.

DL flying 767 JFK-AMS daily.

When was this added? I thought DL had dropped it from the schedules.
At least on the dates I checked, it is a 764 fitted with new interiors and Premium Select.

This probably has more to do with the AA/OW partnership.

JFK-AMS on DL metal is currently planned to resume in June at 3x weekly (Wed, Fri, Sun) with the refurbished 764. For July, it's currently planned for daily 764.

CVG 63.9 [30] -> 12 [4]
RDU 72.8 [27] -> 13 [4]

CVG will still see its departures cut by 81.22% and destinations offered by 86.7% in July, which is supposedly already part of the recovery trajectory... At RDU it's -82.14% for departures and -85.19% for destinations.
Does this spell the indefinite end for DL's focus cities?

I don't think it makes sense to build focus cities back up if DL is planning on being 20% smaller coming out of this.

I do think DL will rebuild a sizable amount of its RDU operation, given they likely don't want to let AA swallow up the market.

It’s been well covered, but AS is the leading carrier at PDX and it’s been one of the most obvious holes in the network pretty much since it was cut during the Great Recession.

AA already has Skywest resuming Eagle flights to LAX in the schedule. One of those departs Fresno only 20 minutes earlier than the first of these AS flights.

These AS flights then mean it will be 5X daily FAT-LAX for a AS/AA/OW combination on a mix of E75s and CR7s.

The notion that it has to do with AA/OW isn't true. First, they still can't coordinate domestic schedules without a JV, second AS isn't a member yet and third, placing a flight 20 minutes apart isn't exactly going to drive some new great synergy that didn't previously exist.
