Pan Am - New Documentary

Thu May 28, 2020 6:11 am

American Public Television (PBS) has a new show on Pan Am's early development of technology which created air service as we know it today. A well-made series about an air service/tech start up of the 1920s that would create all the technology, service, and infrastructure which would essentially teach the rest of the world how to fly and form the most iconic air carrier of all time - Pan Am World Airways. No disrespect to Pan Am as an innovator, but Europeans and Latin americans knew how to fly, and how to run airlines, one of them KLM still there, before Pan Am.

And UA pioneered a lot of things too. First FA, weather radar testing, Jeppsen Charts came from a UA pilot

Personally, I think the world is obsessed with Pan Am. Like some other posters have said, there were other pioneering airlines. By today's standards Pan Am always had a rather small fleet with infrequent service over a lot of routes. They contributed a lot to the development of commercial aviation, of course, but that is getting to be a century ago shortly and a lot of other important things happened since then. Let it die already.

Boo, hiss. There is nothing wrong with looking back on history with rather rose-coloured spectacles. In these uncertain times, "remembering" the past, and reliving it how we wanted it to be, is very powerful and emotive, and a comforting thing for a lot of people.

Of course, using rose-coloured spectacles is how history gets rewritten, but as history is necessarily retold from someone's viewpoint, it is always tainted anyway.

My point is: there is noting wrong with nostalgia; let the people have their fun.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.
