Roadway Global Air

Fri May 29, 2020 4:20 pm

I'm looking for information regarding Roadway Global Air and their network. Back in the early to mid 90's they flew into SJC where I saw their DC-9's, 727-100's and 727-200's. What routes to and from SJC were flown (was it IND?), flight numbers and were they operating for USPS, Emery, DHL or independently? What I do know for sure is that the aircraft were operated by Express One.

....and two Convair 600s.

It was an independent operation with a hub at Terre Haute from which it served 21 cities. In 1995 it pared down its flying and put its shipments on American International Freight. After two years, RGA called its quits.

Their ground operation, Roadway Package Service, was bought by Fedex and became Fedex Ground.

Well, not quite. Roadway Freight was split into two companies first.

Roadway kept the trucking side, and a new company called Caliber System kept RPS (small package delivery), Viking Freight (LTL freight), and Roberts Cartage (custom-critical shipments). It was Caliber System that merged with FedEx in 1997, not long after the UPS strike that year made Fred Smith want to challenge UPS in ground shipments.

By 2000, the FedEx brand was placed on all of the Caliber brands. Federal Express became FedEx Express, RPS became FedEx Ground (and added a residential product, FedEx Home Delivery), Viking Freight and American Freightways became FedEx Freight West and FedEx Freight East, and Roberts Cartage became FedEx Custom Critical.

A slight correction back at you--it was Roberts Express, not Cartage.

Kalitta moved the AIF sort from YIP to HUF in May 1995. The combined overnight schedule was 40+ aircraft. There wasn’t enough ramp space so runway 18/36 was closed nightly to park aircraft. Quite the sight for little ole Terre Haute Hulman Field.

Express One had their operating certificate temporarily suspended by the FAA in 1995 or 1996. RGA contracted with Fine Air, Kitty Hawk, Zantop and others during the Express One grounding.
