Korean Air to lease 747-8 to government as VIP transport

Fri May 29, 2020 6:54 pm

Korean Air to wet-lease a B747-8 to the government as the next presidential plane, in a US$242.3 million deal beginning from November 2020.

As part of the deal, KE will provide pilots, crew members, mechanics, as well as a back-up plane for presidential overseas trips.

Korean government currently uses an ex Korean 747-400.

Anyone know who they are leasing from? Would a lessor need to order one or are there 748i aircraft available?

I believe I saw this story on Twitter as far back as last year. Good to see that it looks like it's still on track, a lot of things have happened over the past months.

They are leasing from Korean Air. I believe the frame is the last 747-8i ever made, HL7644.

Probably an existing KE B748 would be stripped out. BTW, whatever happened to the B788, a terrible teens frame (41987/11), that was supposed to go to the Korean Government?

Thank you. So KE is shrinking their 748 fleet or just a one-off? As I believe this aircraft was operating revenue flights for them.

Yup, heard last year or so that it was going to be HL7644 on Twitter (the source/link has long been forgotten sorry).

That 787-8 frame had a nose gear collapse incident. After repair, it flew to SBD for outfitting, paint, then onwards to Dubai.
Picture of it at SBD: https://www.instagram.com/p/BrN8F9Ogd9X/
(That's the only shot of it that isn't on a 'competing site,' it's also mine, so I ask the mods to exercise understanding)
Sorry that it's only of the tail, but auto-focus acted up on arrival (due to smoke in the air from SoCal fires). The fuselage was all white when it flew in so nothing much to see anyway lol.

EDIT: A 'competing site' lists that it is stored at CEF on March 27, 2019. There's also photographic evidence on a similar 'competing site.'

I think it's a win-win situation for both the government and KA. The government gets a new presidential transport for helping Korean Air, while KA is relieved from the burden of a difficult to dispose of aircraft. Only question is who gets to shoulder the re-outfitting costs? :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: :dollarsign: In any case, the 748i would be an ideal successor to this..... :cloudnine:

Well, the article in OP seems to imply that the deal is the same duration as the the former, ie five years.
I would hardly call that one-off.

How many overseas trips does the government make a year to warrent the cost of this, does it sit with local people?

South Korea is a rich country. They can afford a presidential plane.

More details:
- 747-8 replaces 747-400 from Nov 2021, 3 years earlier than when the US is expected to replace its air force one to 747-8.
- KE won the proposal of $242M for 5 years using 747-8 while Asiana failed its A380 bid which was priced at least 33% higher than KE.
- Breakdown of $242M: leasing fleet 73M, modification 44M, maintenance 68M, leasing extra engine(s) 19M, labor+else 39M.
- More than twice of the current (2015-2020) 747-400 leasing cost of 114M.
- Buying a new one can potentially cost a lot less, but the idea is a political burden.

My take:
KE said it won't retire the last two 747-400 pax fleet until the wet lease overs. Now it can retire them.
747-8, like 380, is cat-F which may lead to restrictions on landing or taxing at some airports. But since the US is going to do the same, maybe it doesn't matter.

I'm guessing interior modifications and new 'esoteric' gear integration are included in that amount. Or are they just transferring the specialized equipment from the current KAF001?

HeeseokKoo : the AF1 VC-25s aren't 747-400 but earlier models, with newer engines.

I doubt the Korean 744 sees anything like the use the VC-25 gets (with all the flying around a very large country, the US, compared to the small South Korea), so this looks like a scheme to give some money to KE, rather than any need to replace the presidential aircraft.

Going for the A380 could have been a political headache, too.
