Are the 18s closed for arrivals at DFW?

Sun May 31, 2020 9:39 pm

I know there is a lot less traffic, but I've checked several times over the past few weeks and everytime DFW has North arrivals, they are avoiding the West side of the airport. Are there runway closures, is it because of reduced traffic, or am I just seeing things? One reason I ask is because it ruins the ability to use Founders Plaza - literally one of the best plane spotting locations in the world. Thanks in advance for any info. I am not from Dallas, but I spotted there once and it was awesome.

Closed? No. But no, they are not being regularly used.

Operations are taking place on the east side of the airfield at present. Well, most of them. I’ve heard that some freight ops are still departing and such from the west side, but for the most part, only the east side being used at present.
Whatever

They’ve been closed periodically throughout each day but right now they’re open. With the increase in flights starting June 4, expect the 18s to be open more often.

As I'm looking out my window right now, I see a couple of AA CRJ7s and an AA 738 on the approach, so they're not closed. Having said that, it has gotten awfully quiet around here and I'm looking for things to pick back up again.

I don't think Founders Plaza can hold a candle to the In-n-Out at LAX or Bayfront Park at SFO, as someone who has lived near those places in the past. But I sure miss seeing more widebodies when using local parks, Founders Plaza or just sitting on my front porch, and I hope they'll be back sooner rather than later.

Lots of parking. ATC piped in. Water fountains. Map of the airport. And lots of space to move around and change angles - I would say it at least holds a few candles.

No they’ll only use it when traffic gets to dense such as in the morning and afternoon. However this only applies to arrivals and not departures.

Runway 18R/36L has been closed daily the last few weeks for several hours ahead of the full closure beginning June 1st.

Runway 18R/36L will be reconstructed similar to the project on 17C/35C last year. Expect the closure to last 8 months or so.

Founders Plaza is good...but I don't think as good as observation areas @ LGA, DCA, MIA, FLL, CLT
