Video - FX MD-11 landing incident at Mumbai

Wed Jun 03, 2020 5:15 pm

Runway 14 is the shorter of the two runways and it was clearly contaminated.

It literally stopped a few metres past the taxiway they were supposed to turn onto. It stopped on the runway and operations were not affected. The cyclone really seemed to be battering down.

Not officially monsoon yet in Mumbai, but Cyclone Nisarga was creating havoc in Mumbai and the coast.

Special lesson for all A-netters that are questioning the need for thrust reversers.

Notice the compressor stall on #1?
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Oooh! Good spot. Yeah, that was lucky. They skidded and that stall might have knocked them off-center, but they wound up on the runway, so more of a paperwork hassle I'd imagine than anything else.

Is that a stall or just the strobes illuminating the spray?

I take it when in that situation the "no reverse thrust under 60 knots" thing goes out the window. ABS must have chattering away too.

So the left turn, was he still trying to make the taxiway?

Yep and I was wondering what happened at that moment the first time I saw the video.

Yeah, you do what you need to do to stop the airplane, including max reverse. I don’t think the MD-11 has FADEC (someone can correct me if I am wrong), which would explain the compressor stall as they were likely over boosting the engine in reverse. The MD-80s I flew were notorious for compressor stalls if you over boosted with the clam shell reversers open.

Also, generally speaking you can have idle reverse all the way down to about 20-30 kts. It’s usually no spooled/powered reverse below 60kts (or 70kts at some airlines)

I heard that this is the first Typhoon to affect Mumbai since long years ago.

I wonder if ATC passed on any PIREPS concerning runway braking action from flights that landed before the FX MD11? The runway shown in the video is one of the wettest I have ever seen & here in Florida, we get some WET runways during the Summer rainy season (which is happening now).

They do have a FADEC/EEC. The compressor stall was most likely due to disrupted airflow into the #1 engine which could be caused by crosswinds or rain ingestion.

I think we may be looking at a write-off here. Are there any scrappers in Mumbai?

What passes as news these days...

No, and rubber deposits in the landing zone for 32 would make it worse.

There are flashes around around the #1 engine at 13, 17, and 21 second timestamps.

If you maintain emergency reverse thrust (till the stop) with low speed (recommended if you approach the runway end !), the wing engines may stall due re-ingestion of the air blown fwd by the fan reversers + sucked up (standing) water. It's all mentioned in the relevant non normal procedure..

Possible aqua-planing? Similar to the Atlantic Airways crash in Norway.
