Mokulele Airlines and Makani Kai Air Merger

Thu Jun 04, 2020 8:40 am

Hawaii's only two commuter airlines, Mokulele Airline and Makani Kai have announced that they would begin merging operations this month.

Mokulele will be the surviving name following the merger. This is the latest change to Mokulele after they were acquired by Southern Airways last year.

Very interesting development - thanks for sharing. With the exception of Princeville, their routes pretty much overlapped, so this will (hopefully) ensure there's enough market remaining to support the operation.

And they can really raise the fares when things get better due to no competitors on some routes. Good luck to the new operation.

After this I would assume that it’ll look something like HA operating 96% of inter island travel followed by WN around 2% then MK with 2%?

I could be way off, but even during Covid I think WN's market share was more than 2%.

I think Mokulele may be operating more flights than Hawaiian right now, for inter-island. Last count was they were at 54. Pre-Covid they hovered around 110. Summer was about 120ish.
