DFW Airport Is Now The World's Busiest Airport

Thu Jun 04, 2020 11:28 pm

DFW Airport was the world's busiest airport overall in May with 12,132 flights, or an average of 391 flights a day.

This significantly beats the second-busiest airport, Chicago O'Hare, which had 8,596 flights in May, or an average of 277 flights a day.

DFW overall had 41% more flights than ORD.

American operated 11,109 of the 12,132 flights from DFW, or 91.5% of flights. In terms of passengers, DFW Airport was likely number 1, but pax numbers haven't been released.

American plans to operate 582 daily departures out of DFW in July 2020, or around 18,000 flights in the month, which excludes other airlines' flights. If this keeps up, could DFW surpass Atlanta and Chicago for 2020 overall?

Does anyone have more data on how Atlanta and other airports performed?

It is an aviation site.

Heck, why is any busiest airport news important anytime?

Woah, lots of grumpy folks!

It’s interesting news, covid or not. And there’s discussion that can be had (will DFW move up the ranks in busiest, etc.)

If it doesn’t interest you, don’t post.

Where was busiest passenger wise? It is probably more relevant than a bunch of empty flights.

I don’t believe these stats are correct. I believe these are only departures. Usually, when the “World’s Busiest Airport” title was going between ATL and ORD, the number of total operations was used, not just departures. While I would assume it would be doubled, the stats the newspaper used aren’t the right ones.

I think the more important numbers to consider in this environment would be load factors and yields. It would be nice to know how much revenue AA is generating off all those flights.

If AA is flying mostly empty aircraft then the title of world busiest airport is meaningless especially if AA's daily cash burn rate is still hovering around $70 - $75 million per day.

For some people and nations being the largest and best of anything is very important:

June 4th, 2020:

Qatar Airways claims to be the current largest passenger airline, the largest cargo airline, based at Hamad International Airport, The Best Airport in the Middle East.

DOHA, Qatar — Qatar Airways continues to succeed demonstrating the airline’s strength and resilience despite the illegal blockade imposed by neighbouring countries on 5 June 2017. The State of Qatar can be proud that it is home to not only the Best Airline in the World but also the current largest passenger airline, the largest cargo airline and the Third Best Airport in the World.

The Best Airline in the World has built strong levels of trust with passengers and governments around the world for continuing to operate to take people home and its leadership on safety measures
Hamad International Airport, the Best Airport in the Middle East, leads the way with strong levels of customer service while implementing the latest technologies to optimise passenger and employee safety

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, seems very pleased!!!

I’d be waiting for ACI’s global numbers. Does “world” = USA? 1 month does not = 1 year either.

Also, it’s pax numbers that is the gold standard metric.

It's very important. It's shows were the true demand really is verses the artificially inflated markets through various means.

I agree O/D enplanements are really what matter. That will tell you where the market demand is.

:checkmark: :checkmark: :checkmark: Totally agree with you.

It's not at all important and is totally meaningless, since it tells us nothing about whether the demand is originating and where it is ultimately destined. Most of it is merely traffic that is being funneled through DFW on the way FROM somewhere else TO somewhere else.

Whatever data is emerging now is not even credible or stable. Things are so dynamic at present that that whatever we see today will change by tomorrow, if not within hours. Clear trends over periods of time which are supported by credible data are what matters.

While certainly a relevant question, an even more relevant question would be why you voluntarily choose to enter this thread . . it's not like that the thread title wasn't sufficiently descriptive . . . :scratchchin:

It seems bragging rights are still important:

No it doesn't. The numbers used to determine the "busiest airport" title are total aircraft movements and/or total passengers, which of course includes transit traffic. If anything, it shows which hubs are geographically well-positioned and have ample facilities to handle large amounts of traffic.

i mean, it's a fun fact....for now? i think that its fair to just state it and then move on.

we are just in the beginning stages of a very seismic shift that is going to impact the airline industry globally. there will be some positive change that comes out of it, but it will not return to the expectations/metrics that mattered on Jan 1, 2020 for quite some time, if ever again. only speaking for myself, but i've been leaning into this for some time. it is very bittersweet and difficult.

But as far as the NBA goes “we” / Canada are still “World Champions”, lol!

Given that China are rapidly moving back toward “normal”, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least of PEKING had more aircraft movements than DFW. PEK almost certainly had more pax last month than DFW.

Congrats DFW.

It's like winning a gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics. You won the gold medal, however you would have much rather won against a full field. In the end you still are a gold medalist which can't be taken away from you.

Honestly not surprised. AA's had the most robust schedule of the Big 3 during the COVID crisis. I had to travel last week (I was going from SRQ to anywhere in the NYC area - PHL/LGA/EWR/JFK were all in play) and AA had by far the most options.

All carriers have robust advanced booking data, and they can see all of this well before passengers are onboard. In a period like this where future cash burn is all that matters, forward bookings will dictate how the network is rebuilt for everyone.

That's not true.

You'll recall that with a few exceptions submitted by the carriers and approved by the government, the CARES Act dictates that carriers continue to serve all of their domestic destinations even if those planes are flying empty. Thus, until the end of August there will still be loads of operated flights that are not at all reflective of any demand whatsoever.

How on Earth is is possible to rank the busiest airports in the world for May when we are only 5 days in to June? It takes most airports a few months to publish their numbers.

ANC had almost 1,000 operations in a SINGLE DAY in April, far outpacing many airports listed above and is only getting busier as the Alaska summer moves in.

Captain Obvious.

What is obvious is that the article is using OAG data to only include air carrier flights and is ignoring GA, military, and air cargo operations.

What? It's pretty much the complete opposite. It has been clear that AA has decided to funnel as much connecting traffic through DFW as they possibly can. UA and DL have still spread out more to multiple hubs. That's the only reason they've increased so much. It's not showing demand and it won't last very long.

So ... doesn’t this basically prove AA is just throwing cash into a dumpster fire ? Amazing how many people look at surface data and have zero interest in the underlying data points that actually tell the real story. Lots of AA stock holders who have dumped their life savings into this train wreck are going to be burned. It’s just math. But ... in this new world I guess feelings are better than actual facts. Show me the yields, LF, and costs then ... it will tell us something.

2 months ago, HAN-SGN became the world's busiest route. Recent data shows that the route is sitting somewhere in the 5-6th place on the chart now.

1 months ago I saw ANC became the world's busiest airport, and now I see this thread :D

Considering the mess 2020 has been, why is that even important?

It's very important. It's shows were the true demand really is verses the artificially inflated markets through various means.

What? It's pretty much the complete opposite. It has been clear that AA has decided to funnel as much connecting traffic through DFW as they possibly can. UA and DL have still spread out more to multiple hubs. That's the only reason they've increased so much. It's not showing demand and it won't last very long.

I was thinking the same thing. I total misread on the situation by KLM617. No offense.

Fun! This is an quirky effect of coronavirus. Even in normal times, in one hour slices, the world’s busiest airport could be different depending the hour of the day.

Anchorage claimed a one-day Saturday title based on movements, and it seems DFW similarly won fair and square for May. Presumably Atlanta was the world’s busiest earlier in the year. I’m not aware of other airports claiming the title for other virus impacted time periods.

What’s the most likely airport for world’s busiest, either movements or passengers, for all of 2020?
