FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Good Morning Enilria,

UA never made it in to SMX, was originally set to start June 4. SMX, like many other cities, lost all of their major carrier service a few years ago, now only served by Allegiant. Thru the 1990's and 2000's they had AA*, DL*, and UA* with over 20 flights per day. Was looking forward to seeing it return but not happening for awhile.

Thanks again!

Thanks for this weekly work.

I have to ask - since this report focuses on flights and not seats or seat-miles - is this really seat-miles as % of a year ago, or flight count?

Thanks again enilria as always I appreciate all the hard work you put into these threads every Sunday.

I think the European reductions are to be expected because it would seem as though most of Europe is on a downward trend with COVID, while here in the US we are seeing cases rise in certain states.

What shocked me are the August LAX cuts by both DL and WN. They were both the last 2 holdout at LAX operating more flights than AA and UA both of whom cut LAX early. I know LAX is a huge O&D airport for most airlines. However, with so much capacity removed thanks to the AA and UA reductions I didn't think we would see any further by DL or WN at LAX especially during the summer months. I know LA has a diversified economy but is the lack of tourist and perhaps the lack of business from Hollywood studios hitting them harder than first expected?

STR & DUS are much more business oriented routes, int'l business travel won't be back by August or September most likely.
BCN, MAD, FCO, and DUB are large VFR destinations, large Expat locations, or have a lot of international students coming to the US universities in the fall

UA & AA's august schedules aren't finalized yet, and an LAX spokesperson expects flights to triple in August, so we'll see what they decide to do:
https://www.ocregister.com/2020/06/12/f ... son-nears/

DL is actually operating a fairly large LAX operation in August, at close to 100 departures (they were only at ~170 last August)

Good catch. That is odd. Of course Americans are not allowed into Europe and Europeans are not allowed into the USA currently which seems like an issue.

Perhaps, but March 2021 is an eternity from now.

I have a theory. I have always thought that a lot of LAX medium and short haul is really interline to foreign flags. That's all dead now. Could that be a factor?

The lack of a cruise industry is I'm sure affecting also pax trafffic in and out of LAX, just as it's having an impact on SEA and other cruise gateways in the country. Those ginormous ships of today take a lot of people every week to fill and none of the people are flying to or from cruises right now... Gulp...

The exemptions granted were only granted until the end of the timeline (9/31, some earlier), but as far as I know, nobody has any obligation to keep service beyond that. So it looks like DL has completely pulled their's from the schedule (except for ASE I believe from an update a couple weeks ago) while UA has only gone until 9/31, but I guess could extend at any point if there really is no obligation after that point.

DL didn't cut more, they just cut from their full pre-COVID schedule that was published before.

That's a hard one to suss out. First, you'd need to the fraction of cruise passengers are arriving/departing by air vs. driving. Then one would want the combined passenger total for the LA/Long beach facilities. It may be a fairly small fraction in the scope of LAX operations and O&D traffic.

What's the rules regarding slot usage at this time? Looks like DCA/LGA flights are loaded in without reduction elsewhere. Since these flights are loaded into Jan/Feb, did they grab additional slots there?

Big moves at JFK, I'm counting already 99 flights a day in late July. August will probably get them to over 120 flights a day here. It really helps JetBlue that leisure, transcon and Carribbean stuff is coming back so much quicker than short business and TATL flights. When we get to October, it might be in JetBlue's best interest to lobby against continued slot waivers. I really could see them operating close to 80% of their JFK/LGA/DCA slots by December.

DL's schedule systemwide ASM % over prior year:
JAN 106%
FEB 107%
MAR 90%
APR 20%
MAY 13%
JUN 17%
JUL 30%
AUG 54%

So with 54% ASM loaded in (probably a larger fraction than that of their usual # of flights), I'm seeing basically around 75 flights a day out of both LGA/JFK on peak days. Not sure how much higher they can go than that while within perimeter business and LH international demand are at minimal for at least the next few months.

What's DL's game plan if slot waivers don't get extended at end of october or even if it expires in end of Jan/Feb?

big moves here by F9 at CVG, ISP and PVD. I suppose CVG is anticipating a DL retreat there and ISP is anticipating WN retreat there. Still seems optimistic that Florida can support this much additional capacity at a time when economy is down.

Any guesses on when we will see a retaliation from UA on JetBlue's EWR buildup?

Most of Europe is still closed to Americans or requires a 14 day quarantine. The ramp up in European routes will not begin until this changes.

That's a hard one to suss out. First, you'd need to the fraction of cruise passengers are arriving/departing by air vs. driving. Then one would want the combined passenger total for the LA/Long beach facilities. It may be a fairly small fraction in the scope of LAX operations and O&D traffic.

How many people actually fly into LAX for a cruise? Probably not many... I always thought cruises that depart from California are mostly for the locals.

We live in the Bay Area, and have traveled at least 5 times to the LA area for a cruise. I don’t think we ever flew into LAX, but we know others that have. I’d bet plenty of people do.

Good to see DL bringing back LGA-MCI/STL. Guess since WN is keeping it so will they. Really hoping for an upgauge here though.

It looks like an overall reduction by WN in August flying period. I see very few adds both short-haul and long-haul for the month or am I not reading this right?

Glad to see the slow build back here. One nugget, one of those four flights will be operated by Republic instead of Endeavor and I believe this will be the first time that DL has regularly scheduled service to XNA on an E175. Ironically Skywest has had quite a few of them that stop here on delivery/ferry flights.

It is also worth noting that pre Covid, Las Vegas would host a significant number of business conventions and conferences. These events are almost all cancelled, and will remain that way for quite some time. The people going to LAS in their near term are primary leisure or VFR, which is obviously far lower yielding than the business conference/convention traffic. As DL catered more to the business traffic, and the LCC handled more of the leisure, it is no surprise to see DL reducing LAS flights.

What surprises me is a lot of B6 non-hub to non-hub flying that's planned as well as new route adds from JFK.

EWR is considered a B6 base now.

But PBI, RSW and TPA aren't. Those added flights are non-hub to non-hub, although with cases spiking here in Florida and at least one state talking about a mandatory 14-day quarantine for anyone entering the state from Florida B6 may end up not starting some of these.

I'm guessing that DL wants to push their central European traffic through the AMS & CDG hubs whereas southern and western Europe need direct service to avoid excessive detours?

STR & DUS are much more business oriented routes, int'l business travel won't be back by August or September most likely.
BCN, MAD, FCO, and DUB are large VFR destinations, large Expat locations, or have a lot of international students coming to the US universities in the fall

It should be a mix of market (STR, DUS and BRU are small markets) and distance to other stations served by DL.

Stuttgart to Frankfurt Airport is 1h13' by train or 200 km. by car
Düsseldorf to Frankfurt Airport is 1h22' by train or 219 km. by car
Brussels to Paris CDG is 1h36' by train

That’s a little dramatic. VS is not even part of SkyTeam. AZ, KL, AF, KE, will all eventually return. DL’s non-SkyTeam JV partners of LA, WS, and VS will come back too. And I expect DL to rebound and eventually get back to a similar level at BOS once things return to “normal”.

Until there's an official press release or company-published memo, that's not the case. As other posters have indicated, B6's EWR flights can easily be crewed via already established bases. Most may not realise this, but to create a new crew base/domicile is not simply a case of just adding flights and done. There are far more logistics that are involved in such an endeavour.

A mock IAD-FCO reservation for Aug 1 returning Aug 15 shows AZ 619/618, codeshared as DL 6686/6677. This is the (formerly) usual IAD-FCO Alitalia nonstop. I wonder whether it's just from a legacy/nonupdated schedule or it's real. No traces of the other (formerly) usual United nonstop.

You're probably not interpreting it right. Remember that the number to the left of the chevron is the number of flights that were in the August schedule last week. This was a "COVID never happened" schedule. The number to the right is the updated August schedule (now adjusted for COVID). There is no comparison between the July and August schedules.

Also big cuts ar LGA, it seems, for August. They must not see biz travel returning. Just guessing, but it looks like most of those cuts are YX flying?

Really good information here, thank you so much for compiling these every week. Providing the ASM % YOY is especially valuable, and I think that the information that you give here a lot of times is way more valuable than any public information anywhere else.

That being said, DL (surprisingly) never really considered LAS an official focus city, instead focusing more officially on SJC, AUS, BOS, and RDU in recent times, according to their press releases. The last time I traveled to LAS, I was surprised at the amount of DL E7W activity there. DL does not expect their business traffic to fully recover for another 2-3 years, so hopefully we will one day see these return when that happens, since LAS is a very popular destination on the west coast for conventions and conferences as others mentioned. The LAS point to point loads must be too low and forecasted to stay that way without their business travelers or their high value customers flying leisure. However, some thought DL's shrinkage would mean the end of those recently announced focus cities, but they're all mentioned by Ed Bastian as markets they are committed to, except for BNA, CVG, and SJC. Seeing August's ASM be almost twice as much as July's shows things are on the mend and Delta is ready to play ball.

big moves here by F9 at CVG, ISP and PVD. I suppose CVG is anticipating a DL retreat there and ISP is anticipating WN retreat there. Still seems optimistic that Florida can support this much additional capacity at a time when economy is down.

Any guesses on when we will see a retaliation from UA on JetBlue's EWR buildup?

DL is restoring CVG service to LAX/LAS/MCO/TPA/FLL/RSW in August. That doesn't look like a retreat. Perhaps they got wind of the F9 adds and is defending CVG. Also, it's not the airport's behind these decisions, it's the carriers. F9 added the flights because they saw an opportunity, not because CVG directed them to add the flights.

In these times, you have to look at month to month changes, not a comparison to what was put into the schedule pre-Covid-19. This is the first time DL has adjusted the August schedule since loading it originally under Pre-COVID-19, so naturally you see cuts. However, this is an increase of about 20-25 flights a day from July.

PBI is a pilot and FA base for B6

It looks like intercontinental cargo shipping rates are coming down from the stratosphere. Unless passenger traffic picks up, the long-haul fleets will stay idle.

With the economy crashing, urgent PPE cargo becoming less and passenger fleets slowly returning to service, we'll likely see cargo rates dropping well below their pre-COVID levels. Not today, but within the next 3-6 months.

They're cuts compared to pre-COVID levels, but actually there's some increases happening at LGA. MCI and STL are returning in August and both are operated by YX.

I'm curious what booking patterns are like with the big three US legacy carriers allowing passengers to book through June 30 without a change fee, and what they will be like after that date.

Look at the adds from PHL though...that's what I call non-hub to non-hub as well. I didn't know that Newark was now a hub for B6.

That said, for Mint flying trans-con, UA is typically almost all wide-body on LAX-EWR and SFO-EWR. If the p.s. B752s do not return, and the 737 MAX 10 isn't ready any time soon, United will have a lot of fare pressure as B6 can offer the same international product as B6 but with a smaller plane to fill. I also see the end for any 364-seat B772s on transcon to and from EWR, with primarily B789 and B78X transcon.

This is still far enough from August where we don't know their final capacity. It could end up being a lot smaller than 54% of their 2019 size. But if they are running a 54% schedule (higher in terms of number of flights), flying only about 25 to 30% of their slots at LGA is pretty slow in terms of bringing things back. This really speaks for the slowness in the return of New York pure business market demand. Again, how do they go from this to using up 80% of their LGA slots by the time slot waiver is over?

I think my comment was not clear. I'm saying F9 made these decisions based on their belief that DL will retreat at CVG.

Thanks for the link about the initial communication regarding the addition of flight by B6, but, maybe I overlooked it, I still see no where about a "base" being established by B6 at EWR. Do direct me to where I can obtain such info...

Looks like DL is going to go back to nonstop China in August. Does anyone know why they are terminating the crew stop in ICN? Also totally unrelated to this, what is AA's plan for resuming China when it is set to come back in October?

It literally lists EWR as a focus city right on the map.

That's what they loaded for sale and in a perfect world, if everything goes right, borders open-up, governments loosen restrictions then that is what they would like to fly.
In reality, who knows what they will be allowed to fly in 6-10 weeks from now.

That's what they want to do, that's what they are going to sell for now, but there is pretty good chance they will still have to do a crew-stop ICN. A lot can change between now and then.
