Is ALASKA AIR next re: iconic but derogatory product name /image changes?

Mon Jun 22, 2020 12:05 am

With the trend very much here now to change the now-perceived-as-derogatory names and images of things like Aunt Jemima syrup, Uncle Ben's Rice, The Redskins, Chiquita bananas ... and now Eskimo pies .. i wonder if Alaska Airlines has any plans or is feeling any pressure to ditch their long time Eskimo face on the tails. I didn't realize until recently that the word "eskimo" was considered bad.

Who called him an Eskimo. Also it’s no derogatory if they actually are Eskimo’s.

Not really. Alaska Airlines needs work with how they describe Chester ("Our Eskimo" was an incredibly stupid blinder), but Chester himself is a fairly popular figure.

The biggest issue they will have going forward is figuring out if he should be Iñupiaq or Yupik. I suspect the former.

The name "Eskimo" is commonly used in Alaska to refer to Inuit and Yupik people, according to the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska. "This name is considered derogatory in many other places because it was given by non-Inuit people and was said to mean 'eater of raw meat.'"

And if the makers of Eskimo Pies considers it questionable, why wouldn't Alaska Airlines be reconsidering/looking at it as well ?
