Updated: German branch of Sunexpress is to be liquidated

Tue Jun 23, 2020 1:05 pm

Good afternoon,

Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines have decided to bankrupt their German based Sunexpress division, the Turkish side will continue operating. What's interesting is that Sunexpress Germany also operated long-haul flights for Eurowings so we have to see what becomes of that now.

Flights are expected to cease on 26.06.2020 after which the airline will be liquidated. Sunexpress Germany has around 1.200 employees.

After Germanwings, this is the second Lufthansa related aviation business to be terminated thanks to coronavirus.

German holiday market was badly hit with airlines such as TUI also announcing cuts both in terms of employees and fleet.

Germanwings was going anyway though. They said last year they want to only have 1 AOC for Eurowings so Corona just sped that up it was happening anyway.

Well, I guess that means we will see medium haul EW at FRA soon. Not surprising, but sad to see as I know many of the Sun Express Germany employees.

On the other side, they have announced more growth in the domestic Turkish market.

Or maybe LH will expand in this sector especially now when they have A320neos and A321neos. They are perfect for those missions.

It’s being liquidated. Drastic difference to bankruptcy. Please be precise with these things.

See e.g. https://www.aero.de/news-35954/Lufthans ... press.html

Talks about a geordneter Liquidationsprozess (structured liquidation process).

Some translation:

Flight operations will be discontinued shortly and an orderly liquidation process will begin. "In the coming weeks, solutions will be developed in trusting discussions with our employees and social partners," the communication states.

Sad, but not totally unexpected. I wonder how many more?

What will happen to EUROWINGS long-haul destinations, as those are operated by Sun Express Germany(XG) A330? Also, what ibrings the future for LH, as LH lsd. pre COVID19 B737-800 and A330 (e.g. MUC-BKK) from XG?!

It appears that LH wants to consolidate their operations. If Eurowings longhaul returns post-COVID, it will likely be operated by Eurowings. The leased EW 738 were leased from Tui, those leases were terminated. The short-haul capacity from XG will be replaced, where necessary, by one of the LH group airlines, Sunexpress (XQ) or another TK group airline.

I thought Eurowings longhaul was basically going to be integrated into LH anyway? The whole Eurowings situation has always been so confusing.

SN takes over the EW longhaul flying; well, for the time being I would say since we also don't know what is going to happen to SN.

SunExpress Deutschland was formed largely for traffic rights reasons so that they could operate from EU to 3rd nations where the existing Turkish AOC did not have authority.

However, in practice, much of its operation overlapped and focused on the large Europe-Turkey market still. Obviously its cost base was higher than the primary Turkish operation.

The entire Eurowings widebody flying and some LH Group internal equity swaps just added to the complication(and likely cost) of the operation.

Right now LH Grouo is a mess. NO ONE has any clue what is actually going to happen. For A large group LH is acting quite small and looks unmanaged!

What would happen to the B39Ms that were intended for XG? There were 3 built, for XG (XQ only has the B38M on order). Besides those MAX 9s, XG had 3 owned B738s (all from the parent XQ order book). I would expect those to be transferred to XQ, but the others may just be returned.

I would expect that the pilots would be laid off as there are no additional 737 jobs within the Lufthansa Group.

Its pretty much impossible to follow LH branding anymore. Who will be operating your flight is a crap shoot.
