NokScoot shutdown

Fri Jun 26, 2020 4:10 pm

Yes another casualty of Covid19, though carrier was struggling somewhat before under intense competition in region anyhow.

The regional budget airline NokScoot is shutting down, saying it cannot recover from the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. The carrier said its board of directors decided on Friday to liquidate the airline, with the decision to be announced in a general meeting of shareholders to be held in two weeks.
NokScoot was established in 2014 as a joint venture between Singapore-based Scoot and Nok Airlines Plc. Nok, a Thai domestic budget carrier.
NokScoot operated medium- and long-haul Asian routes serving seven cities in China and three in Japan, as well as New Delhi, Singapore and Taipei, from its base at Don Mueang airport in Bangkok.

SIA says it will record a one-off charge of USD$89 million with wind-down of the airline.

Scoot, the other LCC spinoff of Singapore, seems to be shaky, too. They have only 12 of 49 aircraft active heading into month 6 of the pandemic. I wonder how much longer the parent company (SQ) can sustain Scoot before they decide to pull the plug?

Singapore Airlines has many A350-900 and 787-10, if Scoot does bite the dust their 787-8/9 would certainly be painted Singapore's colors. A350-900 & 787-9 working in parallel, interesting prospects.

Sorry to learn of their demise. I always enjoyed the livery.

While the coronavirus was likely the nail in the coffin , considering both Nok and Nok shareholder Thai have been financially struggling long before the pandemic, I wonder if this decision was less a question of when and not if.

I don't think SQ wants to give up on Scoot just yet since SQ was betting on a two-pronged strategy on competing in both the premium and budget sectors (hence why Scoot and Tigerair merged in the first place). Of course, the corona downturn may have changed those plans.

Dont see SIA dropping Scoot anytime soon. SIA has drawn out a dual-brand strategy and Scoot big part of that.

SIA also just recently stated they expect Scoot traffic(leisure) to return faster than SQ mainline demand does. If anything its SQ that will shrink further imo.

What would SQ do with them, they have plenty of A380, 77W, plus 779s on order and a load more 78J, 359 as well.
