FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Quite nice to see this one grow over the past years. Originally a Saturday-only E175, then daily E175, then daily A319 and 2x daily mix of 1x E175 and 1x A319 in the winter, and now a 2x daily A319 in the winter.

BA cuts into August. Looks like it does not believe EU-US traffic would be back by then. In fact, UK is talking about US does not open travel to EU until November after the election. So it is safe to say more cuts for July/August is anticipated for EU-US traffic. I think airlines are still holding out to see if there is any words from CDC and CBP. But the consensus is clear: no sight of travel ban being lifted before 13th July. Thus in my opinion more cuts will be planned in the coming weeks for July schedule and August schedule. I think there is slight chance of business travel being allowed from September however leisure travel may not be permitted until winter schedule (so I am looking at somewhere between 24th October to 3rd November).

As always, thank you so much for the report. Doesn’t look like any of DL’s changes have been published as bookable yet.

I’m very surprised there isn’t a slew of European route cuts announced. We’re only 4 weeks away from August and as it stands Europeans aren’t allowed into USA & Americans aren’t allowed into Europe & yet there’s still multiple daily Europe - USA flights planned.

From DUB alone there’s daily DFW & EWR, twice daily BOS, 3x daily JFK, 10x weekly SFO, 2x daily ORD plus multiple weekly flights to IAD, LAX, SEA etc. Who’s going to be flying?

As always, thank you for this weekly report, which is a huge undertaking and greatly appreciated by many here.

I suspect there will be dozens of TATL route cuts coming in the next couple of weeks. The EU will apply the ban (and rightly so) and the Trump Administration will retaliate with an extension. I foresee very limited service until Q4. The US3 will be parking planes again before too long. The US COVID19 situation is out of control and there's no will to confront it.

That shows show pretty sharp cuts by AS and B6 focused on August. DL was focused on September, and UA did little at all. I went looking for DL's year-over-year capacity change for August but Google didn't find anything within the last week.

The majority of widebodies are still parked to my knowledge.

Also this isn't March, parked planes don't generate revenue. Wide-scale parking of non-widebody aircraft made sense in April when LFs were in single digits & CARES act funding hadn't kicked in, not when airlines are filling 60-70% of planes and labor is paid for and oil is cheap.

With regards to the US Covid situation most major metros have flattened the curve, it's the rural areas and the south & a few counties out west that are seeing large increases. There is quite a long list of large-mid sized metros that aren't seeing spikes in cases, very different from March. Also, Florida tested nearly 80,000 people yesterday (double to triple what they have been testing) with plans to increase even more, along with logical closures of high risk activities those are good signs that their governor is finally listening.

Not all airlines have completed their August schedules. DL loaded last week. AS and B6 have just loaded. AA and UA have yet to load. Nothing for September (domestic) is complete.

What is the allergy of sending PQI service back to somewhere geographically relevant, such as BOS? As much as IAD feeds into an air hub wouldn't it be economical to run something to the cultural and economic hub of the region?

I can't speak so much for UA and AA but I've been closely following DL's fleet reactivation and they have been very conservative at pulling aircraft from storage, especially widebodies.

Other than the aircraft that have been in rolling parking at hubs, that basically flying every few days, they have only pulled 4 A359s (in late May/early June) and 2 B763s (this past week) out of storage facilities since this all started. They aren't pulling out aircraft in advanced of needing them. The aircraft that aren't in storage are getting very light utilization and bascially fly about every other day. DL is also doing cargo-only and a lot of military charter work. They could run a lot more scheduled service with the aircraft they already have active before they need to pull more out of storage.

DL's widebody fleet: (in-service vs total)
A359 13 / 13

A332 0 / 11
A333 12 / 31
A339 4 / 5

B763 12 / 56
B764 5 / 21

B77E 2 / 8
B77L 4 / 10

Total: 52 / 155

The 4B change for ABQ-CNM was a previous misfile. It’s always been 1.8 but was mistakenly only filed one way a couple weeks ago.

Which U.S. carriers are reporting systemwide load factors of 60-70%, please? Sources? Within the last week Bastian was quoted as saying DL expects summer revenue to be 25% of last year's. It's not all avg fare decline.

BA is showing flights from LGW to both MCO and TPA in August. I thought they had shut down LGW service to the states. Wishful thinking?

I'm having a hard time finding the 5th flight...does AA post their schedule updates on their website on a different day? Or was this a type-o?

I’m seeing 5 daily for FAT-DFW all 738 in April 2021 in AA flight schedules. Who knows if it will stay this way given it is 10 months out. On a related note, it looks like AA made pretty significant changes to their schedule starting in April that didn’t show up on this OAG. Maybe we will see them next week.

Which U.S. carriers are reporting systemwide load factors of 60-70%, please? Sources? Within the last week Bastian was quoted as saying DL expects summer revenue to be 25% of last year's. It's not all avg fare decline.

AA was in early June, CLT & DFW are well above that
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/12/america ... s-end.html

UA said in a press release a few weeks ago they were at 50%, likely higher now considering they are removing LF caps
https://ir.united.com/static-files/1c0f ... 975348bab9

ULCCs haven't disclosed load factors, and the rest have LF caps

Ed's comment about summer revenue being down 25% wasn't surprising, look how much capacity they are running this month + load factor caps.

All it takes is for a bunch of people to fly to a major city that has bended the curve for clusters of outbreaks to re-ignite the problem. Air travel was the conduit of COVID19 spreading throughout the world and it will continue to be the conduit for it.

Looks like PAE is down to only 2 flights on AS - a morning departure to PHX and an afternoon to LAS. I'm a bit surprised to see no PDX or SFO flight to enable onward connectivity.

Will be interesting to see how many frequencies UA keeps on PAE-DEN.

Part of the problem is the UA network structure, with respect to service to PQI. Yes, from a pure O/D standpoint it may make more sense to have flights from PQI to BOS, but if the market can only have service to one city you have to look at it from beyond just the O/D traffic and ask what single route would be most beneficial to the market. If the flight is on UA, a BOS connection doesn't make sense, as it would require a double-connect to get anywhere other than a UA hub. It's more useful to have a flight to a city/airport that can then provide onward connections to the rest of the US.

Arguably, a flight on DL to BOS would make the most sense, as it would serve the O/D market and provide quite a bit of connectivity to key domestic markets, but DL has shown no interest in entering very small/EAS markets out of BOS in many years.

PQI-IAD was started two months ago so this is just an extension. The reality is that EAS markets need major carrier connectivity and BOS isn’t great for that. With the way IAD is banked, PQI gets easy United connectivity to 50+ markets. BOS can’t offer that easily.

You beat me to posting this info. I thought the air terminal was closed until Sept so I'm wondering if these 2 departures on AS are misfiles or if those 2 routes are actually somehow op'ing? PHX in August? With the COVID situation in AZ these days? Seems very peculiar...

Quite nice to see this one grow over the past years. Originally a Saturday-only E175, then daily E175, then daily A319 and 2x daily mix of 1x E175 and 1x A319 in the winter, and now a 2x daily A319 in the winter.

Don't doubt it. BTW, there are plenty of countries where Americans are banned and the USA has not banned that country. Japan for example.

The AKN/DLG service on AS is really low. On penair each market was getting 90-130 seats a day. Alaska is scheduling a 76 seat triangle. Hopefully they are fully committed to these markets when people start flying more.

Also at 71 miles gotta be the shortest e175 route?

PAE is supposed to reopen 1AUG:

We'll see if it happens - I'm sure AS and UA would be thrilled if the construction timeline slipped further.

So after pulling out of YOW, AA have now followed-up with removing seasonal YHZ and YQB. We shall see if they’re back in 2021.

I imagine AC will be back at BDL. They’ve been there for decades, but it’s always been on 50 seaters or smaller. In the meantime, the few pax there are can go to BOS or LGA. Even AC’s presence in those places will be minimal for the foreseeable future.

Porter are already cutting next spring’s seasonal MYR. Few people will be travelling transborder anytime soon.

I'm pretty intrigued about this route. It's actually on sale on Alaska's website, but it's not cheap. Did AS discover this market "by accident" when they did tags?

Also, keep in mind that the ramp area around the PAE terminal is being strengthened. PAE isn't slated to reopen until 7/31 anyway.

With B6 at LGB I wonder once all is said and done if LAS, JFK, and SLC will be all that’s left. Maybe 6-7 flights a day total I could see out of that.

Now that I am home and on a computer, I see five flights with the times you are showing. But, the AA app is still showing four, I'm not sure why. I agree, this is probably a missfile, as those times seem extremely unlikely. I would have expected to either see an 8am to DFW as the fifth (matches with other West Coast cities with 5X per day), or an upguage to A321s, instead of adding flights a few minutes apart.

Agree 100% People were expecting this virus to be seasonal and experience at least a brief summer rebound. It's looking grim for airlines heading into fall and the end of the CARES help.

Misfiles?

UA filed those a while ago for the ND football season. I'm surprised they're still loaded as ND has yet to make an announcement about the season and the COVID restrictions put in place by the University. As a professor at ND I'm curious to see how it's all going to play out.

What is the allergy of sending PQI service back to somewhere geographically relevant, such as BOS? As much as IAD feeds into an air hub wouldn't it be economical to run something to the cultural and economic hub of the region?

Not to mention BOS is an all two-cabin station for DL - a big part of their strategy is marketing that all of their flights have First, Comfort+ and Main Cabin. There's no way they'd drop a 70-seater into a market like PQI for EAS service.

I searched DFW-FAT on April 22. Although looking at it again it must be an error as there is a 905 departure and a 924 departure. Take a look and see what you think?

I have the same times as I listed above for the 22nd. Weird.

That is strange. I am on my mobile device what are you using? I’m probably seeing the incorrect version as for FAT-DFW I have flight times of 600, 1140, 1141, 1430 and 2359. All 738.

Those are the times I see on the AA website using a laptop.

My guess is there is an error. I don't see a reason for 2 flights schedule close together on the route.

I would expect a retaliatory ban on EU by our administration, if we are indeed unable to travel to the EU :(

What “retaliation”? Theres a virus to deal with. Countries are dealing with it. Spare us the arm waving.

Before you start being a jerk and attacking a poster, perhaps check out the facts. The US retaliated against China for frequencies and is now targeting India (both for actions in response to the virus). It’s pretty common for retaliatory moves - so if the EU prohibits Americans, expect the US to prohibit Europeans.

Well in all fairness, China is where this whole crisis started that was brought upon the entire world. They were deceptive and covered up the facts, played down the severity of the virus and its effects. Basically made themselves untrustworthy /unreliable about status of virus in the country,so why wouldn't we ban travel to such a place?

Disagreeing with a poster is not attacking a poster. Relax.

Maybe retaliation is the wrong word. Reciprocal or equal measures are better to explain the moves.

Is anyone else surprised by this. I mean I am super happy if true, but is it possible they just have not loaded all the cuts.

they have no loaded their cuts for september. In fact, they have not loaded their final cuts for August, even. AA/UA haven't even made their initial cuts for August.

Agree 100% People were expecting this virus to be seasonal and experience at least a brief summer rebound. It's looking grim for airlines heading into fall and the end of the CARES help.

I haven't seen B6 loading in any Florida cuts yet for July/August, but we will see. This is going to hurt NK/F9 a lot more than B6.
