Flying west: female pioneer Captain Emily Howell Warner

Wed Jul 08, 2020 4:30 am

A mention on the passing of Capt. Emily Howell Warner, the first female pilot hired at a US scheduled airline (original Frontier)! Emily was also the first female captain (737) and captain of the first all-female crew at a US scheduled airline, again original Frontier. Her Frontier uniform is on display at the Smithsonian.

Frontier was also the only major US airline to hire a pilot from the Tuskegee Airmen, Capt. Bob Ashby, who would fly in the left seat of FL 73S and M80. Capt. Ashby passed away last year I believe.

Sad news.
She was an impressive professional, a classy lady, and beloved inside Frontier (FL).
We were proud she was ours.
She embraced her trailblazing role enthusiastically and charismatically led by example.
Remember that the times were very sexist, and she used winning ways to educate, enlighten, and illuminate.
An old sexist guy would suddenly be very jazzed and supportive after meeting her.
She will be missed by many.

Well said...

And the part about Frontier being trailblazing...that was some of the most challenging flying across the Rocky Mountain west.
