Heathrow closes southern runway for repairs

Wed Jul 15, 2020 12:05 am

Heathrow closes southern runway for repairs, possibly till October.

Apparently the repairs run much deeper than normal runway resurfacing.

The locals are not happy about the noise, but most airlines are only using their latest fleet, so much quieter than normal.

Heathrow has been on single runway ops for a while now thanks to the pandemic but of course, the runways have been alternating as normal. Either way, the noise for Fulham and surrounding areas will only be an issue during westerly operations, granted that's most of the time but when easterlies do kick in, Fulham will be spared for the duration.

I live in west London myself, the noise is noticeable but nowhere near the level it was like just ten years ago.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

No way to do this normally.

With the runway closed the residents of Myrtle Avenue should have a quiet time.

They are bickering about two to three weeks? Sometimes I despair of my fellow Brits!

This could potentially sound great - I would love to experience take-off from RWY 09L. I've experienced the rest, but 09L would be very interesting

Anyone know why the three holding points on 09L have not been built yet? Planning permission went in several years ago. The plan was to match the other holding areas on the southern runway.

The 09L holding point changes were ditched due to the new runway plans which would have affected their location. There are also issues creating a proper holding point due to lack of space, conflicting T5 stands 501-504 etc

Ten years ago? Pah! :old:

I used to live opposite Hounslow West station in the mid-70s, midway between the 28 approaches (as they were then) about two miles from the end of the runways. When operating Easterly departures, our house used to shake as Tridents, BAC 1-11s, VC-10s, etc. thundered out overhead. Damn, they were LOUD. Then Concorde services started.

I really miss those days.

It’s between 222 and 245. Or next to 418?

They could close the airport completely and locals would still complain about the noise
