No pre-covid flights between Canada and Russia?

Thu Jul 16, 2020 12:32 am

Toronto, Montreal & Vancouver are strong, renowned metropolises with many residents from around the world, including Russia. So with the amount of Russian culture in Toronto, for instance, it’s surprising that no airline flies between any Canadian city and any Russian city. Are politics involved, or is it simply a matter of supply and demand?

For sure politics leading to lack of demand. Tension between Canada and Russia prompted by sanctions related to the situation in the Ukraine https://www.international.gc.ca/world-m ... x?lang=eng. It is likely there is less business travel between the two countries as a result of the sanctions, and that has probably cut into airline profits between Canada and Russia. https://news.paxeditions.com/news/airli ... an-flights .

Both Aeroflot and Transaero flew to YYZ. Aeroflot did SVO-YYZ on and off. Last time was in 2014 with 3x weekly A330 service. Transaero flew DME-YYZ (later switching to VKO-YYZ) 1-2x weekly right up until they went out of business. It was mainly a mix of 763 and 772 service, although the 744 has operated it from time to time.

The problem with Canada-Russia nonstops in addition to minimal demand is that every legacy based in Europe can connect you there, and its usually pretty cheap. That makes it hard to compete. It's the same reason UA and AA had such a difficult time attempting to fly to Moscow. When you've got hubs (especially star alliance) between you and the final destination, it makes it a difficult financial case to overfly that hub. There is for sure enough demand from Toronto to Moscow, but it can be served via FRA, MUC, LHR, AMS, etc.

YYZ-Moscow are mostly VFR traffic too, so highly seasonal and price sensitive.

May be AC could have made it work with Rouge with seasonal flights during summer or Christmas time.
