Interesting we haven’t heard anything from AA. Should be interesting to see how DL and UA take these.

Interesting timing. I would've thought that they would rather focus on rebuilding their core network.

My bad, I saw that after. Anyways I think an announcement like this deserves its own thread.

Yeah the announced routes should probably have their own discussion. On that note, not entirely surprised to see someone add more TLV with El-al's issue, but suspect this was in the works before that. This will bring ATH to 3 cities by AA assuming nothing else changes.

I do wonder what this means for DFW-TLV...

Interesting ads. I wonder how this makes sense today if it didn’t make sense a year ago. Could just be something to do with their wide-body aircraft now?

I doubt it means anything for DFW-TLV. The DFW route was always about connecting the Bible belt and central part of the country (including the Texas tech industries) with a one-stop flight to TLV. AA was never gunning for the NE traffic to backtrack through DFW. I think they will be perfectly complimentary with AA feeding the DFW flight and B6 providing most of the feed for the JFK flight.

This is great news!

JFK-TLV doesn't need a whole lot of feed to operate... the O&D is massive and uncertainty over El Al's future leaves the market in flux. JetBlue is much larger at the NYC point of sale so AA would be looking to tap into JetBlue's customer base that might otherwise be on Delta or LY metal for TLV trips.

The jet Blue cooperation in the NY market sure ads a lot of feed to these new routes. The type of feed that AA only has in PHL and ORD so it makes sense to tap on the NY to Greece and Israel markets which are massive to begin with.

American is "resetting" their network amid COVID-19. They're using this time to take any advantage wherever they can and add where carriers are weak during these times.

And of course, they didn't have the JetBlue partnership a year ago.

What about the (in)famous dispute that AA had with the Israeli government?

AA took over from TW and also assumed its liabilities. When TW left Israel, they failed to pay employee benefits (IIRC as end-of-employment payout, which is common in Europe, or social security benefits) and therefore the Israeli government vowed to impound any AA aircraft upon touching down in Israel. As a matter of fact, when AA and US merged, US had a successful PHL TLV route, which did not continue, due to this dispute.

Does anyone have any update about it?

This has been discussed on this website many times. It took me a while but I found the link to a previous discussion: https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1421349&p=21315649

Long story short: This is an overblown issue that is in the past anyway. AA had previously announced DFW-TLV (nearly a year ago), so clearly they felt fine flying to TLV long before today's announcement.

Interesting. So, AA and B6 are reviving and expanding a previously in place partnership (it was focused mostly if not totally at JFK) in the late 2000s and early 10s. The JFK-ATH and JFK-TLV adds kind of make sense. TLV needs little to no feed to work, and there is plenty of cargo to haul as well. With EL AL out of the market for the foreseeable future, this is a cool add and makes a lot more sense than flying it from PHL. As for ATH, wonder if they will drop PHL-ATH or ORD-ATH or just keep all 3 seasonally? JFK-ATH should do well if travel to Europe can resume in 2021. Good to see AA try different things and out of the box. Clearly, they smell blood at UA and DL and see opportunity to do something to fix the hole they have in the NY and Northeast markets and now is as good a time as any to do it.

I'm reading it as JFK-ATH being year-round. I would assume it would be a seasonal launch but that may not be the case.

It's seasonal.

will introduce new seasonal service between JFK and ATH next summer

JFK-TLV is year-round apparently.

JFK-ATH will be seasonal (the route does not work in the winter) and will likely be on the 777-200ER. The TLV route is a good candidate for the 77W. GIG, which is coming back as a seasonal route will likely be the 772.

How much feed does JFK-ATH need? I feel like it will not need a ton of B6 feed to support it. And that feed will not be enough to cannibalize AA feed into PHL and ORD for those flights. Again, who knows what the next 12-24 months looks like for TA travel.

Would the 772 be too large for JFK-ATH with Delta (and possibly Norwegian) on the route? Could this finally be an opportunity to introduce the 787s into JFK?
