There just isn't that much traffic right now to support it. Normally pre-COVID it was five flights a day so running 60% frequency is actually pretty good particularly considering it is a competitor's hub.

Most of them can be, since DTW and MSP are hubs. But I thought SEA was a hub, too.

I'm guessing these are all a misfile for Cape Air as they are all EAS markets. Anyone have more info?

Thanks Enilria. I've always liked the song "Tuesday Afternoon" by the Moody Blues. Works for me.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe this is a result of switching from the Cessnas to the Tecnam? I recall something similar happening when they first loaded the switch over to the Tecnam on one of the New England routes several months ago. It might have even been BOS-RUT.

No.

This only reflects changes to what was for sale in August last week to what is loaded for sale this week.
Note that these changes are almost all for the month of August.
DL is slowing the rebuilt / ramp-up of capacity.
3-4 weeks ago, DL pulled down the pre-COVID schedule for August. That big update was projected to be about 1000 more flights/day versus what they are flying in July but nowehere near preCOVID. Based on the continued spread of the virus and weak future demand, they have rolled back their plan from August. As announced in the Q2 earnings call last week they are only looking at 500 more flights in August over July.

Thus why we see all the close-in changes for August, where there should be a pruning / reduction of about 500 flights/day.
Its only logical that a lot of that is going to involve the long/thin and hub overflying in addition to frequency reduction.

This indicates they are slowing the rebuild of the network.

If they leave though, the barrier to re-entry from the gate perspective is high in SEA. Their staff is all contract except for maybe a manager or two so that cost is minimal. If it keeps them in the market, it is worth being there for them right now.

[quote="jasoncrh"]NOt really surprising to see them drop EWR. I dont think that EK was really counting on, or has ever counted on, many connections at EWR from B6 to make EWR work. Most of the new destinations at EWR on B6 either already have EK flights (LAX and SFO), or are timed more for local markets and not for connectivity to / from the Emirates flight. Emirates receives most of its B6 flow at BOS and JFK, where there are more B6 flights that allow for connectivity.

Emirates is NOT dropping EWR. They are keeping EWR-ATH-DXB. They are removing the morning nonstop to DXB which will most likely return in 2021.

Last week, Key Lime / Denver Air dropped several routes, including TVF, and we speculated it must have been a misfile.

If this is the only route that's being refiled, maybe it means Thief River Falls really is being dropped?

I had no idea Thief River Falls even had service. Strange being so close to GFK - it would be like D.L. having service right up the road from FAR. Is it supported by DigiKey? I mean - TVF has a nonstop to MEM for cargo because of them.

TVF is an EAS city, so it is supported by the federal government.
I am not sure how any of these EAS locales can just be axed 100%. Seems odd but who knows anymore.

TVF is still bookable thru October, maybe they’re trying to work out how to get a plane to MSP for this going forward? No idea

Previous poster is correct - current guidance as far as I’m aware is that flights to select markets and those served once a day may be reduced, but not removed entirely. So DL’s MSP-ABR service for example went from 2x to 1x daily. I’m guessing maybe that’s what Key Lime is trying to figure out how to do in the TVF too

Yeah, the only good thing about NK in my view is the more-noticeable-from-afar livery. As a GA pilot I enjoy watching them approach and land at AUS when circling from above. I've never flown them and probably never will; 28" is not my cup of tea. :coffee:

I'm guessing there was some error, as most of those DL changes are for September, as they extended their schedule through Sep 30 on Saturday morning.

There were some Aug reductions, but the majority should say September

Wonder if PVD will lose service all together. If 10/1 airlines can drop stations as they please and DL has canceled services to PVD thru 9/30 then it looks like 10/1 will be the final nail in the coffin for DL @ PVD. I hope I’m wrong.

They could do that now if they wanted. It’s a Boston area airport that’s covered by service to Logan. I don’t think they really want to drop PVD permanently. It’s just an easy drop while their hands are bound.

Delta has no obligation to serve PVD at all as it falls under BOS. My guess is it was easier to simply advance august cuts than rework the schedule. They had the full schedule in for Sept originally (3x ATL 4x DTW), my guess is this will need to be reworked to something smaller like 1-2 ATL and 2-3 DTW. The fact that PVD had an earlier restart than the others until Sept 30th means they are at least more bullish on it than other secondary airports. I think worse case scenario is a suspension until next spring but the market is large enough for DL to serve it even under depressed terms.

I'm still going to look at changes. There are more options than OAG. The factors are cost and moving the capture day is not great because few airlines file schedules Mon, Tue so it just delays things. Most airlines file Friday or Saturday night.

Agreed. If CARES is not extended, October is really going to reset the size of the industry. Growing gets much more difficult when the government isn't paying your employees and you have to rehire in this environment.

DL has not resumed a lot of MSP flying in the Midwest. SBN is normally 2 daily flights and is stuck at 0.

I think DL has two strategies that are conflicting post-COVID. 1) Make ATL the #1 hub (this is more so a priority than before). 2) Fly to the closest hub (this is standard Delta strategy).

I'm going to wonder out loud if the DOT will update its 4/7/20 Show Cause order to mandate service beyond 9/30/20. Stayed tuned thru 8/1/20.

VIII. DURATION
The Department tentatively determined that the Service Obligation imposed under this Order
would extend through September 30, 2020.37 The Department tentatively chose this date for the
initial term of the Service Obligation because carriers accepting financial assistance under the
CARES Act must maintain certain levels of employment until that date. The Department also
stated that if the Department finds that it is necessary to extend the Service Obligation, it would
notify covered carriers of that extension no later than August 1, 2020.

I think unlikely. Even if CARES is extended I think that language is likely gone.

It's probably an invalid equipment code. Either that are they are using another operating certificate with a diff code.

NOt really surprising to see them drop EWR.

I think that's odd given the EU restrictions on Americans.

What’s with the 1.1s in February? Are they testing a second flight on Saturdays?

I noticed that too. ABQ-JFK also shows 1.1 in Feb but on the jetBlue website, looks like our once daily flight isn't operating daily, should show up as 0.8 or similar. Must be another glitch and too far out to carve it in stone. Perhaps the year over year has something to do with it, Feb had 29 days this year.

Going to Cape Air's website and using flights from STL-UIN for September It still shows flights bookable and they are using the Tecnam aircraft so I would assume this is a loading error on the part of the OAG.

B6 PHX from both JFK/BOS also show 0.9/1.1. I assume it’s just 1.0. Thanks for your work in this weekly thread!

I think it's possible you won't see a lot of business oriented markets come back anytime soon. The general consensus is that business travelers will probably not come back in any numbers for a really long time, if at all. It's believed that leisure travelers will come back first and that's reflected in the routes that are being added. That said, there are still more than 100 planes parked in various places that could be used to fund any adds that aren't covered by any cuts.

GEG-SEA runs through Sept 5. Purely "leisure grab" traffic I'm told. WN showing how swift and creative and risk-taking it is right now. Used to run 7-8x daily in early 2000's.

GEG, Northern Idaho traditionally popular spots for SEA area in summer - and vice versa (although I have no idea why you'd want to go to CHOP right now).

Lots of cuts, but I'm not surprised . The airlines were too optomistic about August and the fall.

I'm still going to look at changes. There are more options than OAG. The factors are cost and moving the capture day is not great because few airlines file schedules Mon, Tue so it just delays things. Most airlines file Friday or Saturday night.

It probably had the wrong country code filed with it.

To state the obvious, we are seeing the domestic schedule changes for August and now September in these threads. And while all very interesting, I will be more curious to see which legacy puts out their updated October domestic schedule first.

As we all know, the CARES act required service be maintained by carriers to most markets until Oct 1. But post Oct 1, carriers are free to drop stations from the schedule as they please. So I will be curious to see if there are massive station drops in October, by whom, and to what degree... or if the schedules in October look more similar to September. There is still probably a few weeks to go before October schedules come out... but then things could get very interesting. As a fan on the industry, I am hoping for the best.

Agreed. If CARES is not extended, October is really going to reset the size of the industry. Growing gets much more difficult when the government isn't paying your employees and you have to rehire in this environment.

Sad to see what appears to be a permanent cut of MLI-MSP. We have had MSP service as long as I can remember, from the Saab to the Avro RJ100. I’ll miss having that option.

It’s been a few years since WN has served any of these markets.

I saw that. Must be operational? Or charters?

Not sure if this will show up here next week, but JonNYC just tweeted that another 10% cut for domestic flights is coming for AA in August. Bookings must be looking really bad right now.

10% versus what is now filed or vs prior year? That's a huge difference.

It's probably an invalid equipment code. Either that are they are using another operating certificate with a diff code.

NOt really surprising to see them drop EWR.

I think that's odd given the EU restrictions on Americans.

GEG, Northern Idaho traditionally popular spots for SEA area in summer - and vice versa (although I have no idea why you'd want to go to CHOP right now).

Meh, SEA-bound leisure traffic leans heavily Downtown/Ballard/SoDo, CHOP was just 8 blocks and a park, and Cap Hill is more of a local interest area than any kind of destination. The widespread homeless situation is much more of an issue for the parts of town tourists are hanging out in, and it doesn't seem to have really adversely affected travel to SEA other than from the suburbs.

I asked about these 9K routes in the STL thread and they have to be misfiles. They are showing as bookable on their website.

Am I missing something here but how is Delta able to manage only 3 daily flights between Atlanta and Phoenix ? That seems very low compared to similar sized cities.

Delta has never run a super thick schedule into PHX. It's a long flight (1500+ miles), it's a large AA hub that AA prices competitively, and while I don't have the DOT stats up, I don't believe there's really a ton of O&D traffic between ATL/PHX (compared to e.g. ATL-SFO or even NYC-PHX in the winter due to the snowbird effect).

Which I guess has always surprised me. I get that demand is in the tank and even during good times the demand is the demand , just was interested to see that even during regular times DL only had 5 flights from one of the most populous US cities into their mega hub with endless connections. Then again to your point AA can also get you anywhere via CLT.

I think DL was actually running at least 6x daily on ATL-PHX for most of the year previously (and maybe 7x during the winter), mostly on 321s lately. It's also a route that has seen widebodies (763s and 333s) during the winter season on and off, so running 3x daily now is definitely a significant cut over the pre-COVID schedule. But with Maricopa County being a hotbed for COVID right now, and being in the worst part of the year for weather (and with business traffic mostly gone), I'm not surprised to see 3x daily as the current schedule.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.
