WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

I am going to look at other data sources over the next few weeks both because of the day change and cost. I would like to get it back to Sunday, but if I find a better solution I will move to that. FYI... For now it will remain on Tuesday or Wednesday...

I'm thinking the huge NK cuts means future demand in general is slowing as well as cancellations rising. NK even as an ULCC would go broke with 60% load factors on $29 fares.

Thanks for your hard work. Interesting B6 is banking in Jan for everything to return to normal. Hope that is true. I didn't expect EK to drop EWR but I guess its cheaper to keep operations at one airport. Would be shocked to see that route come back in the near future.

I'd say it is more that they just want a schedule out there to draw in bookings. Who knows what will fly.

Everything points to EWR coming back better than JFK, but who knows...

I think AC has updated their schedule since then, as it doesn't match this:

NOt really surprising to see them drop EWR. I dont think that EK was really counting on, or has ever counted on, many connections at EWR from B6 to make EWR work. Emirates receives most of its B6 flow at BOS and JFK, where there are more B6 flights that allow for connectivity.

They didn’t drop EWR, they dropped one of the 2 daily flights. EWR-ATH-DXB remains.

Thank you for still doing these. Can't even imagine the amount of work it now takes.

Lots of cuts, but I'm not surprised . The airlines were too optomistic about August and the fall.

I believe everything for DL is for September and not August.

The initial August schedule was loaded a couple of weeks ago and there were some recent reductions from that (1,000 flight increase from July now reduced to 500 flights over July), but for example BOS-SFO. That was definitely NOT in the original August schedule that came out a couple of weeks ago. It can't be reduced now if it was already removed a couple of weeks ago.

To state the obvious, we are seeing the domestic schedule changes for August and now September in these threads. And while all very interesting, I will be more curious to see which legacy puts out their updated October domestic schedule first.

As we all know, the CARES act required service be maintained by carriers to most markets until Oct 1. But post Oct 1, carriers are free to drop stations from the schedule as they please. So I will be curious to see if there are massive station drops in October, by whom, and to what degree... or if the schedules in October look more similar to September. There is still probably a few weeks to go before October schedules come out... but then things could get very interesting. As a fan on the industry, I am hoping for the best.

Sad to see what appears to be a permanent cut of MLI-MSP. We have had MSP service as long as I can remember, from the Saab to the Avro RJ100. I’ll miss having that option.

DL has not resumed a lot of MSP flying in the Midwest. SBN is normally 2 daily flights and is stuck at 0.

Definitely. AC will operate at most 1/4 of this transborder schedule. YYC and YOW transborder are both gone until at least Labour Day.

I think it is more to do with DL just offering a lot less service period. And for the smaller cities in the Midwest, that often means only MSP service or only DTW service, and not both. And logically, the small cities in the western Midwest tend to retain MSP, while those in the eastern Midwest retain DTW. Hence no MSP-SBN for now.

They could do that now if they wanted. It’s a Boston area airport that’s covered by service to Logan. I don’t think they really want to drop PVD permanently. It’s just an easy drop while their hands are bound.

I'm going to wonder out loud if the DOT will update its 4/7/20 Show Cause order to mandate service beyond 9/30/20. Stayed tuned thru 8/1/20.

would extend through September 30, 2020.37 The Department tentatively chose this date for the
initial term of the Service Obligation because carriers accepting financial assistance under the
CARES Act must maintain certain levels of employment until that date. The Department also

notify covered carriers of that extension no later than August 1, 2020.

WN flew BOI-GEG up until this April, and continuously before that from 5/95. But it only lasts for Aug then gone 4 good after that.

Interesting. I was not aware of that clause. Is there any additional funds that must be provided to the airlines for extending the date, or could the DOT theoretically just extend the Service Obligation date indefinitely until the Covid situation goes away?

AA had been the most aggressive of the legacies in adding capacity, so I would expect more cuts from them in particular. Their current August schedule was very aggressive and would only work if demand had kept rapidly rising, but that is no longer the case it seems.

A bit surprising yes, but for the foreseeable future, there is not much to speak of in terms of traffic, given the pandemic situation generally, and more specifically, in the US, and the though to markets EK caters to. This also means ATH will have no link to the USA outside of the Summer travel season, where in a normal operating environment, DL is double daily from JFK, UA flies from EWR, and AA flies from PHL and ORD, with the recently announced JFK route to be added (possibly at the expense of PHL). And then there is DY, which in recent years, added up to four flights a week from JFK as well. Guessing EK will be parking a boatload of A380s for the long term and will need the 77W for other markets to cover.

How can people be "p.o.'ed" when the bookings never materialize? If people need to fly, they'll be accommodated on the new schedule. Giveng the situation in the southern and western parts of the country, though, I don't think AA will hear any substantial amount of hemming and hawing about schedule cuts.

Am I missing something here but how is Delta able to manage only 3 daily flights between Atlanta and Phoenix ? That seems very low compared to similar sized cities.
